ALEXANDER THE GREAT - IRON MAIDEN (GREEK SUBS)
I noticed that a new program entitled "Alexander the Great's Mysterious Death" on the Discovery Channel has put forward the hypothesis that Alexander died from an accidental overdose of hellebore, a poisonous plant used to induced vomiting in ancientimes. Back in 1998, however, a group of doctors gathered for a clinical pathology conference at the University of Maryland Medical Center expressed their belief that Alexander was killed by an intestinal bug: Alexander the Great, who ruled much of the ancient world until his death in 323 BC, was conquered at age 32 not by an enemy, but possibly by a tiny intestinal bug. In an analysis based on available historical records, physicians at the University of Maryland Medical Center believe that Alexander was the victim of typhoid fever. Their analysis, titled, "A Mysterious Death," is published in the June 11 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. The most popular theories among historians previously have been that Alexander was poisoned or had died of malaria. In the week before he died, historical accounts say Alexander the Great had chills, sweats, exhaustion and high fever, all of which are typical symptoms of certain infectious diseases, including typhoid fever. "He was also described as having severe abdominal pain, causing him to cry out in agony," says David W. Oldach, an infectious disease expert at the University of Maryland Medical Center and lead author of the article. "That was an important clue, because ...

Born in 356 BC, Alexander succeeded his father Philip II of Macedon to the throne in 336 BC, and died in Bablyon in 323 BC at the age of 32. Alexander was one of the most successful military commanders of all time and it is presumed that he was undefeated in battle. By the time of ...

After Alexander's forces successfully defeated the Persians at the Battle of the Granicus, Darius took personal charge of his army, gathered a large army from the depths of the empire, and maneuvered to cut the Greek line of supply, requiring Alexander to countermarch his forces, setting the stage for the battle near the mouth of the Pinarus River and south of the village of Issus. Darius was apparently unaware that, by deciding to stage the battle on a river bank, he was minimizing the numerical advantage his army had over Alexander's. Initially, Alexander chose what was apparently unfavorable ground. This surprised Darius who mistakenly elected to hold the wrong position while Alexander instructed his infantry to take up a defensive posture. Alexander personally led the more elite Greek Companion cavalry against the Persian left up against the hills, and cut up the enemy on the less encumbering terrain generating a quick rout. After achieving a breakthrough, Alexander demonstrated he could do the difficult and held the cavalry successfully in check after it broke the Persian right. Alexander then mounted his beloved horse Bucephalus at the head of his Companion cavalry and led a direct assault against Darius. The horses that were pulling Darius' chariot were injured, and began tossing at the yoke. Darius, about to fall off his chariot, instead jumped off. He tossed off his royal diadem, mounted a horse, and fled the scene. The Persian troops, realizing they had lost ...

Historians are always born too late: Alexander the Great is dead, and so is Charlemagne, so that descriptions of past events have to be reconstructed from chance remarks, unreliable accounts, deliberate lies, and semi-obliterated traces. "Alexander the Great" is a song by the English heavy metal band Iron Maiden. It was written by Steve Harris and appears on the band's 1986 album Somewhere in Time. It tells the story of the Macedonian general and king Alexander the Great and his eleven-year conquest of Asia. The song begins with a reenacted passage from Alexander's father, Philip of Macedon, spoken by Nicko McBrain: "My son, ask for thyself another Kingdom, for that which I leave is too small for thee". "Alexander the Great" is an unusual rock song in the level of historical detail it contains in its lyrics. Among the events specifically mentioned are: * Alexander's arrival in Asia in 334 BC * The fall of the Scythians by the river Jaxartes * Alexander's cutting the Gordian Knot * The founding of the city Alexandria in Egypt * The Battle of Arbela, where Alexander defeated King Darius III * Alexander's entrance to Babylon, Susa and Persepolis. Additionally, the song states that Ancient Macedonia was a part of Ancient Greece : Near to the east In a part of ancient Greece In an ancient land called Macedonia Was born a son To Philip of Macedon The legend his name was Alexander The song also claims that "he spread Hellenism far and wide" and besides that Alexander "paved the way for Christianity", true statements considering that Hellenistic and Christian periods followed the Classic one. The song concludes stating, somewhat incorrectly, that Alexander's army refused to follow him into India (in fact, part of his army did follow him to India), and with his death from fever in Babylon - although Alexander did suffer from fever at the time of his death, the causa mortis itself is, to this day, still unknown and open to debate.

The church and the state have always been at odds. Political power is a synonym for "physical force," for bending people to government's will. But Christianity is love – power's antidote. Anyone who sincerely follows Jesus Christ will not try to compel others – because He didn't. We need to protect the church from the state.Full Digg post: http://digg.com/political_opinion/Does_the_American_flag_belong_in_church_2
