http://www.EmploymentCrossing.com The city of Warren in Ohio was forced to lay off 11 firemen and 20 policemen in order to balance the budget. The layoffs mean that the majority of the city's police detectives will now be put back on the streets to make sure the patrol division is covered. Four officers who were laid off were just hired in the spring.

U.S. economy probably lost more jobs in 2008 than in any year since the end of World War II as firings rippled from homebuilders and automakers to banks and retailers, a government report may show this week. Payrolls fell 500,000 in December, bringing last years decline to 2.4 million, the most since 1945, according to the median estimate of economists surveyed by Bloomberg News ahead of Labor Department figures due Jan. 9. The unemployment rate likely jumped to the highest level since 1993. The figures will underscore the urgency behind President- elect Barack Obamas plan to pass a stimulus package that will create jobs and mitigate the recession, already the longest in a quarter century. Other reports may show slumps in housing, manufacturing and service industries deepened at the end of last year, setting the stage for more weakness in 2009. (ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW) Were continuing to lose massive amounts of jobs, said Michael Feroli, an economist at JPMorgan Chase & Co. in New York. The negative momentum carrying over into the first half of 2009 will hold down the economy regardless of policy. The jobless rate probably climbed to 7 percent in December from 6.7 percent the prior month, according to the survey median. Manufacturers probably cut 103,000 workers from payrolls, the report may also show. Factories, which make up 12 percent of the economy, shrank in December at the fastest pace in 28 years as new orders for products from cars to furniture reached the lowest level since records began in 1948, the Institute for Supply Management reported last week. Auto Bailout The Bush administration agreed last month to give General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC $13.4 billion in federal loans to avert bankruptcy. GM, whose shares slid 87 percent in 2008 — the most among the 30 companies in the Dow Jones Industrial Average - - and Chrysler probably led a drop in December U.S. auto sales that capped the industrys worst year since 1992, according to the average forecast of analysts surveyed. The Tempe, Arizona-based ISMs report on services, covering the rest of the economy, is due Jan. 6. That index likely dropped in December to the lowest level since records began in 1997, the survey showed, as Americans cut back during what may have been the worst holiday shopping season in four decades of record keeping. Electronic Arts Inc., the second-biggest video-game publisher, last month boosted planned job cuts to 1,000, or 10 percent of its workforce, and said it will consolidate or close at least nine studio and publishing locations. Labor-market conditions have deteriorated, Federal Reserve policy makers said last month when they cut the benchmark interest-rate target to as low as zero. The central bank also has said it will buy debt as the next step in combating the recession, now in its 13th month. Minutes of the Feds Dec. 16 meeting will be released on Jan. 6. see this vid on the money masters and wake up http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-515319560256183936

http://www.EmploymentCrossing.com After deliberating for nearly a month, the Mesa City Council in Arizona has decided to cut spending by almost $61 million over the next year and a half, as well as slice at least 343 positions from its payroll. The city is home to about 450,000 people who have already faced two major budget crunches since 2006, and this one will hit harder than both of them combined, according to The Arizona Republic. Planning and Building Safety departments and Neighborhood Code Compliance and some environmental programs have merged, with the combined departments losing more than 70 full-time positions.

A federal judge in Washington on Thursday ordered the release of five Algerians who have been held without charges at the U.S. military base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, for seven years. U.S. District Judge Richard J. Leon said the five men could not be held indefinitely as enemy combatants, but he said the military could continue to detain Belkacem Bensayah, one of the six Algerians who challenged his confinement. The government had accused all six of the men of planning to travel to Afghanistan to join al-Qaeda, but Leon said prosecutors failed to prove the allegation against five of them. The judge said the government did not prove the allegation, which was based on a single source. U.S. President-elect Barack Obama has promised to close the prison camp after he takes office in January. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=97264590 Arizona governor Janet Napolitano is President-elect Obamas top choice for Department of Homeland Security Secretary. The department was created after the 2001 attacks on New York and Washington D.C. The job of secretary is often called the hardest job in government because of its many of responsibilities such as securing the nations borders, studying and testing infectious diseases, maintaining national security, protecting the President and other deputies and coordinating disaster response. A former federal prosecutor, state attorney general and twice-elected governor of Arizona, Napolitano is a clear choice for the post as her home state sits on the border with Mexico—meaning she has first-hand, executive experience dealing with many of the issues she will confront as head of Homeland Security. http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5jHgA96TaIUqOGm7X9zvs8-j15Z5QD94IU5UG2 A big victory was achieved in the battle to set a more ambitious pace for the United States to limit greenhouse gas emissions on Thursday. California Representative Henry Waxman unseated Rep. John Dingell for the chairmanship of the powerful House Energy and Commerce Committee. The panel is one of the most important House committees, with sweeping jurisdiction over energy, the environment, consumer protection and health care programs such as Medicaid and the State Childrens Health Insurance Program. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=97255015 The number of new claims for U.S. jobless benefits has hit a 16-year high. The Labor Department said Thursday that new claims for jobless benefits rose last week to 542,000, the highest level since July 1992. The news contributed to another poor day on Wall Street. The Dow Jones industrial average plunged more than 444 points. After news of the soaring jobless claims, the Senate approved legislation to extend unemployment benefits through the holidays. The White House said President George W. Bush would quickly sign the bill. http://www.forbes.com/feeds/ap/2008/11/20/ap5723739.html For the first time an American pilotless aircraft has struck beyond Pakistans tribal areas, firing missiles and killing five foreign militants in a village well inside Pakistani territory on Wednesday, according to a Pakistani intelligence official and local residents. The attack represents a widening of the Bush Administrations campaign aimed at killing militants with Al Qaeda and the Taliban, who use safe havens in Pakistan as a springboard for attacks against NATO and US soldiers in Afghanistan. Pakistans Foreign Ministry summoned American Ambassador Anne Patterson to protest the cross border strike on Thursday, but it also sent a contradictory message with Pakistani Army General Kayanis pledge to keep open a critical supply line that runs through Pakistan for NATO soldiers fighting in Afghanistan. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/21/world/asia/21pstan.html?ref=world

MCCAINS COLOMBIAN TERRORIST PALS G. GORDON LIBBY & CHARLES H. LINDNER: Liddy has made four contributions totaling $5,000 to Senator John McCain's campaigns -- including $1,000 in 2007. G. Gordon Liddy an admirer of Aldolph Hilter in November 2007 had Senator John McCain, 2008 Presidential candidate, on Liddy's radio show. Liddy greeted him as "AN OLD FRIEND," and McCain replied. "I'm proud of you, I'm proud of your family... It's always a pleasure for me to come on your program, Gordon, and congratulations on your continued success and adherence to the principles and philosophies that KEEP our nation great. REASON LIBBY IS A CONVICTED FELON: In 1971, after serving in several positions in the Nixon administration, Liddy was moved to Nixon's 1972 campaign, the Committee to Re-elect the President (officially known as "CRP" but to opponents known as CREEP), in order to extend the scope and reach of the White House "Plumbers" unit, which had been created in response to various damaging leaks of information to the press. At CRP, Liddy concocted several plots, some far-fetched, intended to embarrass the Democratic opposition. These included firebombing the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C. (where documents leaked by Daniel Ellsberg were being stored), kidnapping anti-war protest organizers and transporting them to Mexico during the Republican National Convention (which at the time was planned for San Diego), and luring mid-level Democratic campaign officials to a house boat in Baltimore where they would be secretly photographed in compromising positions with call girls. Most of Liddy's were rejected, but a few were given the go ahead by Nixon Administration officials, including the break-in at Daniel Ellsberg's psychiatrist's office. Ellsberg had leaked the Pentagon Papers to the New York Times. At some point, Liddy was instructed to break into the Democratic National Committee offices in the Watergate Hotel CHARLES H LINDNER: Charles H. Lindner was implicated in the financing of terrorist organizations in Colombia. In fact, the financing began while he was the president of Chiquita Brands' board of directors. KEATON - S&L SCANDAL McCain and Keating had become personal friends following their initial contacts in 1981, and McCain was the only one of the five with close social and personal ties to Keating. Like DeConcini, McCain considered Keating a constituent as he lived in Arizona. Between 1982 and 1987, McCain had received $112,000 in political contributions from Keating and his associates. In addition, McCain's wife Cindy McCain and her father Jim Hensley had invested $359,100 in a Keating shopping center in April 1986, a year before McCain met with the regulators. McCain, his family, and their baby-sitter had made nine trips at Keating's expense, sometimes aboard Keating's jet. Three of the trips were made during vacations to Keating's opulent Bahamas retreat at Cat Cay.

www.EmploymentCrossing.com The unemployment rate for Arizona shot up half a percentage point last month reported the Arizona Department of Commerce. Arizonas retail jobs fell by 2400, and construction jobs fell 2100. Business, professional, leisure and hospitality jobs also fell off. Some job areas had a good month from July to August which 34,000 were hired but these were mostly back to school hires. This, however, is still 50,000 jobs less than this time last year. Shrinkage in construction, financial services, and other areas over the past year have contributed to the unemployment rate. Senior director of research administration stated, Have we reached the bottom? I would hope that we are going to reach it soon. But based on those numbers it looks like were still seeing a bit of a decline continuing although it seems to be slowing.

US intelligence officials increasingly fear that the next terror attack on the United States will be carried out by white Americans or Europeans. As Barack Obama and John McCain head to New Yorks Ground Zero seven years after 19 Middle-Eastern hijackers brought devastation to the US mainland, counter-terrorism experts believe that any future attack will be made by terrorists with an American face. They point to reports of white faces in terrorism training camps in Pakistan - the so-called white men of Waziristan, a reference to the remote tribal area where both al-Qaeda and the Taliban have bases. Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington has released its fourth annual report, CREWs Most Corrupt Members of Congress, outlining Washington politicians who it says have most egregiously betrayed the publics trust. 12 of the 24 members of Congress listed in the report are under investigation. The thirteenth, New York Congressman Charlie Rangel, has opened a House ethics investigation on himself. With soaring gas prices, a housing market in crisis, rising unemployment, and a nation at war, elected officials should be prioritizing their constituents needs over their own self-interests, said CREW executive director Melanie Sloan. Unfortunately, the members of Congress listed in CREWs Most Corrupt report have decided that their personal needs are paramount to those they represent. This report holds them accountable for those choices. The entire list is as follows: Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-FL) Rep. Ken Calvert (R-CA) Rep. John T. Doolittle (R-CA) Rep. Tom Feeney (R-FL) Rep. Vito J. Fossella (R-NY) Rep. William J. Jefferson (D-LA) Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA) Rep. Jerry Lewis (R-CA) Rep. Daniel Lipinski (D-IL) Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) Rep. Gary G. Miller (R-CA) Rep. Just as the national unemployment rate hits a five-year high, the United States Border Patrol is filling 6,000 positions for new border agents. "The president has made a presidential mandate to hire 6000 agents by the end of the fiscal year," according to Damian White, a recruiter with U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Those hired must move to the southwest border of the United States, to offices in Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas. New recruits start at $36,000 annually, but can make $70,000 by their third year. An applicant must also be between 18 and 39 years of age, a U.S. citizen and able to pass a written test, background check and physical. They must complete a 55-day basic training program and learn Spanish if they are not already proficient. US Border Agents arrest undocumented aliens, investigate terror threats, and fight illegal smuggling.
