Substance Abuse Treatment & Recovery Approaches for Women. Host: Ivette Torres, Associate Director for Consumer Affairs, Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT), Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Invited Panelists: Becca Crowell, executive director of Nexus Recovery Center; Duiona Baker, associate administrator for women's services at Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA); Imani Walker, with the Rebecca Project for Human Rights (RPHR); and Steve Buchness, therapist, program coordinator, Emmorton Treatment Services. Substance use disorders present serious and unique health concerns for women. Unfortunately, few available services are designed to specifically meet the needs of women with substance use problems. Recent studies point both to the need for gender-specific services for women and to the greater effectiveness of such approaches compared to more traditional treatment modalities. This program will examine how treatment services are changing to help women successfully navigate the road to recovery. It also explores other issues that can affect their recovery progress, such as child care, co-occurring disorders, and domestic violence. Women drink less alcohol than men any way you look at. Women are more likely to be non-drinkers, start drinking at an older age, consume smaller quanties when they do drink, drink less frequently, and binge less than their male counterparts. But, she is more likely to drink alone. Nevertheless, many women have alcohol abuse or alcoholism problems. About 4% of women have a current problem and 8% ever have had a problem with alcohol. Women are at risk for alcoholism with 1 to 1 1/2 drinks per day vs 4 for men. Women's alcoholism and their relationships with a husband or signficant other is complex. Most people know that alcoholic men keep their wives while alcoholic women are divorced by their husbands. But this may actually be a good thing. Many women alcoholics stop once divorced of separated. Women who live alone are more likely to develop alcoholism. But this is not because they are unhappy being alone (married women are much likely to be depressed). It is because because men and women alike feel more comfortable commenting on and re-directing a woman's behavior. They will intervene much sooner. There is greater social pressures on women to confrom, so their drinking either must be hidden from others. Since this is difficult to do with a housemate not doing it is often the result. There does not seem to be any differences in the genetic tendency towards alochol abuse. A typical woman who comes for treatment is about the same age as a man. But while he has had years of gradual escalation, her problem evolved rather quickly. Her drinking was likely triggered by specific events and she came to treatment because of health or relationship (not job or legal problems like men) affects of the drinking. Women suffer more damage to the liver and other health problems with comparable amounts (standardized by weight) than similar men, so there are more health problems sooner. Women are more likely to be addicted to prescription drugs than illegal. They combine them with alcohol. Stimulants (cocaine, methaphetamine, even Phen-Fen) are used at about the same rate as men. But women's motivation is often weight loss or to temporarily counter depression that is more common in women. Women are more likely to start and continue smoking for weight control. Alcohol use is associated with higher rates of breast cancer and osteoporosis. They are more prone to liver disease. Menstrual disorders and impaired childbearing potential are associated with both alcohol and drugs. Specifically, heavy, irregular, paninful periods and PMS are implicated. Women smokers go through menopause earlier. While unplanned pregnancy is a consequence of addiction, it is also one of women's strongest motivators to quit. Female drug users have a much higher rate sexually transmitted disease, including AIDS. This is due to having unprotected sex with high risk partners while stoned. Male to female transmission is always higher. Also, drug addicted women trade sex for drugs.

"Noel" beat out "High School Musical" for top sales in 2007. The Christmas CD has led Billboard's top 200 album chart for 4 weeks in a row. That's the first holiday CD to take the top spot for so long. This week, Alicia Key's "As I am" followed behind in second. And in third is the Eagles' "Long Road Out of Eden." British singer Lily Allen is going to be a mom for the first time. She and boyfriend Chemical Brothers' band member Ed Simons are reportedly expecting. There's no word on when the baby is due. Allen and Simons first started dating in September. The singer's rep says they're thrilled wiith the news. One magazine is reportedly paying big bucks for pictures of Jamie Lynn Spears' baby. TMZ.com says OK! Magazine is forking over a million dollars for the photos of her newborn. The 16-year-old actress and her mom confirmed her pregnancy to OK!. She's apparently 12 weeks along with her longtime boyfriend Casey Aldridge. Queen Latifah is signing on to be a spokeswoman for Jenny Craig. The singer and actress is reportedly the most recent addition to the celebrity endorsements for the weight loss company. Valerie Bertinelli and Kirstie Allie are also part of the ad campaign. A spokesman for Jenny Craig says Queen Latifah will begin the program in January. Denzel Washington's new film "The Great Debaters" is making its way to the big screen. The movie, starring and directed by Washington premiered in New York last night. The film's other stars like Forest Whitaker and Jurnee Smolett were there as well. Hello, I'm Rebecca Field with a UPI entertainment update on this Wednesday, the first day of August 2007. Nicole Richie says the rumors are true...she's pregnant. In an interview with Diane Sawyer, set to air on "Good Morning America" tomorrow and Friday, she said she is almost 4 months along. Richie also confirmed that her rocker boyfriend Joel Madden is the father. She also spoke to Sawyer about her recent DUI charges. Richie said she's ready to take responsibility for her actions. She'll spend 4 days in jail and 3 years on probation. R&B star Usher says his wedding with girlfriend Tameka Foster was not canceled...just postponed. He tells Us Weekly magazine they haven't set a new date yet but they still intend on tying the knot. The couple originally planned to wed last weekend but it was canceled at the last minute. Foster tells People magazine rumors of why the wedding was called off are completely untrue. She did confirm however that she had a brief pregnancy scare on the wedding day and had to check into the hospital. Her health is reportedly just fine now. The rock band Korn says they're going green. They announced yesterday in New York that they're joining in on the effort to fight the climate crisis. For this year's Family Values tour, they'll reportedly fuel their 16 tour vehicles with domestically created bio-diesel. That fuel can come from soy, corn, or other types of vegetable or animal oil and reduces Carbon emissions. The band is encouraging other groups to follow their lead. TV personality Star Jones is admitting to having gastric bypass surgery. In the September issue of Glamour magazine, the former "View" co-host says the surgery is the secret to her 160 pound weight loss in the past 3 years. This is the first time she's given details about the procedure. In the past she only admitted to having a "medical intervention." Jones says she was afraid of what others would think if she admitted her secret. Actress and singer Minnie Driver says a past love inspired her newest album. Driver released her second album "Seastories" recently and is setting off for a promotion tour this month. Florida police say she died of an accidental drug overdose. They say there's no sign of foul play after an extensive investigation that included searching her laptop and watching tapes from hotel cameras. The Broward county medical examiner says he found traces of an anti-anxiety medication, sedatives, weight loss drugs and other substances in her system. Autopsy results show no sign of any illegal drugs. Smith died February 8th in her Hollywood, Florida hotel room. Rapper Eminem and his ex-wife are agreeing to play nice...at least in public. Eminem asked a Michigan court to stop Kim Mathers from speaking badly about him. He claims her recent negative comments about him in the media are harming their 11-year-old daughter. But they've come to a compromise by signing a court order requiring both parties to avoid such remarks in public. One former punk rocker is facing homicide charges. The ex-singer for the band Mest, Anthony Lovato, was arrested Sunday in the fatal stabbing of a man in Southern California. CNN reports the victim is believed to be his ex-girlfriend's new lover. Police say the two were arguing when Lovato allegedly stabbed the man with a pocket knife. Lovato tells police the man assaulted the rocker earlier in the day. Pop star Jessica Simpson is in the giving spirit. People magazine reports she made a trip to Mexico over the weekend to donate a new minivan to an orphanage there. Last year, Simpson won a sports car at the MTV video music awards but instead asked for a minivan so she could put it toward a good cause. The children reportedly welcomed her with open arms and gave her an engraved plaque and a beaded necklace. 3-D films are making a comeback. Director James Cameron says new digital technology are allowing filmmakers to produce 3-D films that will wow audiences. A British newspaper reports Cameron will release his upcoming movie "Avatar" in 3-D only. DreamWorks animation and some musicians also plan on trying out the new technology. CNN reports she's in negotiations to appear with Harrison Ford in the adventure film. Steven Spielberg is directing the movie and George Lucas is producing. It's set to begin filming later this year but there's no word on a release date. Britain's Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall will soon be grandparents. A British newspaper reports Camilla's son Tom Parker Bowles and his wife Sara Buys are expecting their first child. Bowles says the royal couple are thrilled to become grandparents. A friend of the family told the paper the announcement raised Camilla's spirits as she's been recuperating from a recent hysterectomy operation. Actress Uma Thurman and her boyfriend Andre Balazs are calling it quits...once again. A source close to the actress tells People magazine, the couple split after 3 years. It isn't their first breakup...they first split about a year ago. But there were rumors that Thurman and Balazs were planning a wedding in the Caribbean this summer. Thurman's rep has yet to confirm the breakup. "American Idol" winner Taylor Hicks is revealing the secret to his weight loss. He says his new appearance is a result of a strict diet and exercise regimen. Hicks told People magazine he lost 22 pounds by avoiding fatty foods and having a weekly running schedule.
