Sebastien Buemi topped this week's testing at Portimao for the third consecutive day after setting his best lap in the last minute of Wednesday's running. Following two frustrating days of rain, the teams were finally able to get some dry running and use slick tyres, as the track dried out by mid-morning today. Toro Rosso were once again the only team running a modified 2008-spec car and Buemi's best time was nearly two seconds quicker than second-placed Nico Rosberg. Rosberg completed several long runs during his second day in the Williams FW31, covering 143 laps during the day, and was the fastest of the 2009 cars. He was half a second quicker than Lewis Hamilton, who returned to the cockpit today for the first time since winning the world championship in Brazil. Hamilton's only incident of the day was when he stopped the McLaren MP4-24 on the approach to the hairpin with an engine system shutdown at the end of the morning session, but he went on to complete 81 laps. He will hand the car over to Heikki Kovalainen tomorrow. Timo Glock was in action for Toyota and caused a half hour stoppage during the morning when a disconnected oil pipe resulted in his car catching fire at the hairpin. He was not running KERS at the time. Fernando Alonso completed the field for Renault and brought the day's running to a conclusion at the end of the afternoon when he stopped in the pit entry. "It is very early days with the new car and so we keep discovering things and improving our understanding with every lap," said Alonso. "There are so many things to learn in a short time and we need to maximise our time on track, so to do so many laps today was a good effort. The programme for tomorrow will be more of the same and hopefully the weather will remain dry." Today's testing times: Pos Driver Team Time Laps 1. Buemi Toro Rosso-Ferrari (B) 1:27.987 128 2. Rosberg Williams-Toyota (B) 1:29.729 143 3. Hamilton McLaren-Mercedes (B) 1:30.242 81 4. Glock Toyota (B) 1:30.878 63 5. Alonso Renault (B) 1:31.743 84
Formula One Algarve: F1 Tests January 20. Sebastien Buemi assumed his customary position at the top of the timesheets for the second day of this week's Formula One test at Portimao in Portugal. With Scuderia Toro Rosso being the only team present to run their 2008 car, albeit with 2009 downforce levels, there was little doubt that the Swiss driver would end up well clear of the opposition. Buemi's best lap was more than three seconds clear of his nearest rival, McLaren's Pedro de la Rosa, on a day that started wet, dried out around lunchtime, rained again and then was hit by a dramatic hail storm. With teams getting to grips with their new cars, little meaning could be derived from the times - with de la Rosa's 1:37.512 seconds almost five seconds up on Toyota's Jarno Trulli - who was getting his first taste of the TF109. Nelson Piquet was fourth fastest in the new R29, but lost a lot of track time with an engine problem that the team could not fix quickly. Nico Rosberg was the only other driver running, as he got his first experience of the Williams FW31. Today's times: Pos Driver Team Time Laps 1. Buemi Toro Rosso-Ferrari (B) 1:34.429 48 2. de la Rosa McLaren-Mercedes (B) 1:37.512 62 3. Trulli Toyota (B) 1:42.399 30 4. Piquet Renault (B) 1:45.860 9 5. Rosberg Williams-Toyota (B) 1:51.580 31

McLaren Mercedes MP4-24 Launch Ceremony. Formula One 2009. McLaren have revealed their car for the 2009 world championship: the MP4/24 not only has to meet the new regulations, but also the standard its title-winning predecessor set. After over 18 months of development, the team have gone back to review every element of the new package to ensure the grip from slick tyres and reduced aerodynamics are maximised. As a result, the McLaren appears to be more developed than its peers and exploits some different concepts in its aerodynamics. Starting with an all-new monocoque the car sports a highly-raised front chassis section, with a rounded drooping nose at its tip. The nose is long and its underside features a scalloped shape, akin to Renault's R28, which should work to reduce pressure and increase downforce under the nose cone. Already debuted in testing, the front wing is a more complex affair than seen elsewhere so far, with a two-element flap. Interestingly, only the upper element of the flap moves as allowed under the adjustable front wing rule for 2009: this is controlled by a switch on the steering wheel. Only a simple bargeboard was fitted to the car for the launch, while the front splitter features a clever T-shaped fence to recoup some of the losses from not having more bodywork in this area. But it's the sidepods that are the biggest divergence from designs seen so far. McLaren have chosen the keep the sidepods tall and slim: this maximises the space between the rear wheels and, in order to allow sufficient cooling area, the exit to the bottle zone curves outwards at floor level. The exhaust outlets are a distinctive feature, being placed high and far back. At this stage the removeable panels do not feature any hot air outlets, but the lack of any other exits suggests this might change when the car starts testing in warmer climes. Aiding the airflow out of the back of the sidepod and improving flow over the diffuser the gearbox fairing converges into a sharp "V" shape at the rear of the car. The upper bodywork echoes the MP4-23, with the complex undercut roll structure and humped tail fin. Again, the rear wing features some concepts from its predecessor, with the endplates merging into the flap and three slots to reduce drag, which will be critical now that the wing is narrower and steeper. Having made huge improvements to its engine through 2008, the car carries the same power unit revised to meet the reduction in revs and extended life. The engine also connects the KERS motor/generator to the carbon gearbox, the motor unit sitting within the niche in the back of the monocoque where the oil tank usually sits. This has required the resiting of the oil tank. KERS also needs the car to carry a power control unit and batteries to control and store the power from the motor generator. These will be sited within the sidepods: the left hand one features an extra inlet to cool them. As McLaren are so advanced with their 2009 project, the launch car was the second chassis to be built up, as the first chassis is already in Portugal, ready for its shakedown with Pedro de la Rosa tomorrow. McLaren will only make five chassis, compared to the usual six, this year due to the limitations in track testing.

FERRARI F60 Unveiling-Formula One 2009 News. http://www.f1-live.com/f1/photos/2009/team-ferrari/diapo_108.jpg http://www.f1-live.com/f1/photos/2009/team-ferrari/diapo_109.jpg Defending champions Ferrari this morning unveiled its 2009 challenger to the media ahead of a scheduled test later today at Mugello. Ditching the recent numbering system, the new 2009 Ferrari has been dubbed the F60, the 60th year of Formula One competition for the team, and was shortly afterwards shaken down by Felipe Massa at the teams test track. The car, initially dubbed the 660 during the design process, conforms to the 2009 regulations and features numerous innovations. "The choice is very simple," explained team boss Stefano Domenicali with reference to the designated name for the new car. "We wanted a way to recognise the fact that the history... that Ferrari has always been connected in the presence of Formula One. So this is the 60th championship of the F1 and this is the 60th time that Ferrari is here in Formula One." "So that is the history and hopefully that will be future together with Ferrari in Formula One," he added. As far as aerodynamics are concerned the modifications are a result of the Overtaking Working Group set up by the FIA in collaboration with the teams to produce a set of rules aimed at encouraging more overtaking. The front wing, which has a neutral profile common to all, is developed mainly on its side elements and is much wider than in the past. The bodywork can no longer carry the slotted apertures that were so common in recent times while other aerodynamic devices are significantly reduced. The rear wing is higher and narrower than in the past; the diffuser has been moved rearward. The combination of changes led the initial design phase down a radically different route when it came to the sidepods and protection components. The apertures have been reduced in size and moved rearwards while the upper and rear elements are larger to aid the exit of the air. The new rules regarding aerodynamics have also led to modifications to the suspension and the whole layout of the car has been redesigned in light of the new rules and to achieve a balanced weight distribution. The design also takes into account two other significant changes to the regulations namely the option to use Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems and the re-introduction of slick tyres to the past. KERS on the F60 has been designed by Magneti Marelli and is centrally mounted on the engine under the rear part of the chassis. The slick tyre rules is also down to the work of the OWG, as is the introduction of a flap on the front wing that can be adjusted by the driver when the car is in motion. The software for managing this tool, as well as KERS, was designed in Maranello. Massa heads out at Mugello in the new F60 The transmission has been redesigned to optimise the aerodynamic efficiency of the car and the casing is again carbon fibre and it is still positioned longitudinally. There is also a new braking system designed by Brembo. As far as the engine is concerned, it remains a load baring structure and the rules now state that just eight engines may be used over the 17 Grand Prix weekends. Accordingly, the maximum permitted engine speed has been reduced to 18,000 RPM and the distance target for each unit has been increased to 2,500 KM. Modifications have been made to the inlet trumpets, the position of the injectors and the configuration of the exhaust. 95 minutes after the launch of the F60, the 056 V8 engine fired up for the first time in public as the team conducted the first shakedown lap of the new machine. The team plans longer runs as the day progresses.
