This is the 1st of a 2-part series that was filmed at the 2008 National Family Conference in Chicago, Illinois. This video provides an introduction to the Foundation for Ichthyosis and Related Skin Types, Inc. and illustrates the importance of this organization and the family conferences.
Other names of this disease are ichthyosis congenita,keratosis diffusa fetalis, harlequin ichthyosis, ichthosis fetalis or simply harlequin fetus. It is severe form of congenital skin disease characterized by the thickening of the outer layer of the skin (keratin). Consequently, the skin may look like scales of a snake which is reddish in color with crack almost everywhere making it painful for the baby and susceptible to bacterial infections. Harlequin Ichthyosis is a very rare, incurable, genetic skin condition. In it, the skin grows far faster than normal. The whole body becomes completely encased in a very thickened, scaly suit of skin armour. The skin becomes very tight causing restriction of movement of the arms and legs and, particularly, the fingers and toes. The face is deformed, the eyelids are inverted, the ears are bound down, and the mouth is very tight.

The patient didn't have a quick cure, it took more or less a year for his skin to change completely and for the fish scales-like lesions to disappear. His skin was very dry, was terribly itchy, and he could not control himself and this was damaging his contact with patients. He was a nurse assistant. With the auto-hemotherapy treatment, he was gradually getting better, it is true that I also gave him vitamin E, medicines that work in the skin, vitamin A, but auto-hemotherapy was what really worked. It is a skin disease, is the most severe form of congenital ichthyosis, characterized by a thickening of the keratin layer in fetal human skin. In sufferers of the disease, the skin contains massive, diamond-shaped scales, and tends to have a reddish color. In addition, the eyes, ears, mouth, and other appendages may be abnormally contracted. The scaly keratin greatly limits the child's movement. Because the skin is cracked where normal skin would fold, it is easily pregnable by bacteria and other contaminants, resulting in serious risk of fatal infection. Sufferers are known as harlequin fetuses, harlequin babies, or harlequins. The harlequin-type designation comes from both the baby's apparent facial expression and the diamond-shape of the scales (resembling the costume of Arlecchino), which are caused by severe hyperkeratosis. The disease can be diagnosed in the uterus by way of fetal skin biopsy or by morphologic analysis of amniotic fluid cells obtained by amniocentesis. In addition, doctors can now usually recognize common features of the disease through ultrasound, and follow up with 3D ultrasound to diagnose the condition. In the past, the disorder was invariably fatal, whether due to dehydration, infection (sepsis), restricted breathing due to the plating, or other related causes. Not long after, he was suffocated by his mentally ill father, who thought of him as a sign of the devil.
