Almourol Castle, Portugal, was once a Templar Knights stronghold during the Reconquista, and is situated on a small rocky island in the middle of the Tagus River. The occupation of the site extend to the Roman period but in 1129, when Portuguese troops conquered the surrounding area, the castle was already in existence and was known as Almoralan. Almourol was given to the Templar Knights, who then became responsible for the defence of the ancient capital, Coimbra. The knights went about settling the area and rebuilding the castle, many of its original architectural characteristics are still visible today. A translation of text inscribed on the main gate tells us that Almourol was completed in 1171, just two years after the construction of the castle at Tomar. These two castles had several features which were common to both castles. The architects opted for a quadrangular design with the high walls being protected by nine circular towers. Each castle also had a jail tower. The tower at Almourol castle has been significantly modified down through the centuries and consisted of three levels. When The Order of the Templar Knights and the reconquista faded into history, the importance of Almourol declined and it was eventually forgotten. In the 19th century, Almourol was rediscovered and attempts were made to rekindle the of the middle ages. Many of the original structures were destroyed without any thought to its true heritage. During the 20th century, Almourol castle was adapted to be an Official Residence of the Republic, with some important events of the dictatorial regime that devastated Portugal taking place within. Era is a music project by Eric Levi that is often based on chants in an imaginary language close to Latin. The music could be described as New Age[1]. Their music mixes music, opera, and Gregorian chants with other contemporary styles. Their music was used in the soundtrack for the French film Les Visiteurs and in Sylvester Stallone's "Driven". Eric Levi uses English choirs to record the songs. The song "Ameno" was used in Australia within "The Power of Yes" advertisements for Optus Communications. The band has sold more than 10 million albums. Era is also famous among mixed martial arts fans due to their song "Enae Volare Mezzo" being the theme song of Fedor Emelianenko. As well, the song "Ameno Dorime" is used by Fedor's younger brother, Aleksander Emelianenko. Era's live shows often feature vocalists dressed in medieval clothes and armour. Fortuna is the goddess of fortune in Roman Mythology. German composer Carl Orff selected 24 poems from the collection and set them to new music between 1935 and 1936.. O Fortuna is the most famous movement from Orff's Carmina Burana composition, and opens and closes the cycle. Orff's setting of the poem has become immensely popular and has been performed by countless music ensembles as Era, Enigma, Highland and many others. It powerfully conveys the human condition of struggle. O Fortuna velut luna statu variabilis, semper crescis aut decrescis; vita detestabilis nunc obdurat et tunc curat ludo mentis aciem, egestatem, potestatem dissolvit ut glaciem. 7DY-DVD-164 - Cheyenne is Wyoming's most populated city. When the railroad was constructed in 1860 this "hell-like settlement at end of the railroad" became an important trading centre. For what was to become the federal government, the State Capitol was built and with its golden dome and Corinthian columns it is similar to its larger counterpart in Washington. In the middle of the eighteenth century French scouts were the first to penetrate this region that was then inhabited by the Arapaho and Shoshone Indians. The cowboys and farmers of the Old West needed to spend their hard earned money and Cheyenne profited accordingly and a profusion of hotels, saloons and warehouses suddenly appeared. The Badlands was given its name by the Native Indians due to the inhospitable terrain as they felt threatened by it. Thirty seven million years of wind, rain and snow transformed this highland into a natural work of art that was inaugurated as a national park in 1978. Set within the Black Hills in the state of South Dakota is one of the most famous landmarks in the United States, the Mount Rushmore National Memorial where four monumental portraits of the most famous American presidents have been carved into the granite and symbolize a kind of spectacular tribute to democracy. Twenty five kilometres south west of Mount Rushmore another stone image towers up from the landscape, the Crazy Horse Memorial. Constructed in 1947 it commemorates the famous chief of the Oglala Sioux and its dimensions are even larger than those of Mount Rushmore. As in former times, the routes of the first pioneers still bring visitors into the far west through overwhelming mountain scenery with grandiose views, Wild West towns, buffalo prairies and vast ranches. Make no mistake about it, America's Wild West is still wild: a place of natural spectacles and nostalgic adventure!

The Majapahit dynasty, based in and around East Java, began the foundations of an empire that was to dominate the entire Indonesian archipelago, the Malay peninsula and part of the Philippines for hundreds of years. This was the beginning of profitable trade relations with China, Cambodia, Siam, Burma and Vietnam. As power in Central Java declined in the 10th century, powerful kingdoms rose in East Java to fill the power vacuum. During the reign of King Erlangga both East Java and Bali enjoyed lucrative trade with the surrounding islands, and an artistic and intellectual renaissance. Parts of the Mahabarata epic were translated and re-interpreted to conform to an East Javanese philosophy and view of life, and it was from this era that East Java inherited much of its temple art. Today the open-air amphitheatre at Pandaan performances tell some of the stories of this glorious past, set against an impressive backdrop of distant volcanoes, capturing the spirit of the province's culture and scenery. East Java's claim to fame in modern history is its vanguard role in the struggle for independence against colonial forces in 1945. Little of the Majapahit Empire's former glory still stands in East Java. Nevertheless, East Java has a variety of attractions, ranging from temple sites to unspoiled beaches, stunning volcanoes, extra ordinary highland lakes, resplendent marine parks and fantastic wildlife reserves. Magnificent mountain scenery includes the crater and legendary sea of sand at Mount Bromo, the "sulphur mountain" of Welirang and rugged Ijen Plateau. The island of Madura, famous for its bull races, is also part of the province and has its own traditions, culture and language. The provincial capital, Surabaya is second in size, population, and commerce only to Jakarta. It is also the most industrialized province in the nation with a strong economy based on agriculture, (coffee, mangoes and apples), fisheries and oil. The province is efficiently connected to the rest of Java by good roads, regular trains, and air services between Surabaya and other major cities in the country including Denpasar on Bali, which is only half an hour's flight away.

Grand opening of Bloom Restaurant Because Love Overcomes One's Misfortunes For the past twenty years, ACWP's motto has been helping "one child at a time". Founded in 1988, ACWP's mission was to assist thousands of unaccompanied Vietnamese refugee minors who were displaced & detained in various refugee camps throughout Southeast Asia. Our mission has since evolved to serve local orphaned and under-privileged children in the rural and remote areas of Central, Highland and South Vietnam. Equally important, ACWP programs have also expanded into a wide range of services to meet the different needs of our young adults. In May 2007, ACWP campaigned for capital to construct a vocational training facility and we were successful in raising $60K USDollars. Now, we are excited to announce the launch of our newest vocational training program for our young adults-- Bloom Restaurant--a training restaurant facility in Hue, Central Vietnam. Construction of ACWP's first training restaurant already began in late September 2007 with the projected grand opening date in Winter 2007. Bloom Restaurant is located in Hue tourist area at 14 Nguyen Cong Tru. Bloom Restaurant was the grand step after a successful pilot collaboration between Hoa Sua in Hanoi and ACWP for construction of a lodging facility and admission scholarships. As a result of the successful partnership with Hoa Sua in Hanoi, many of the ACWP-sponsored students have graduated from Hoa Sua with culinary arts and/or hospitality degrees. The training restaurant was proven to be a safe and nurturing environment for these youths to gain hands-on experience in hospitality services and management. These young adults practiced their culinary arts and skills while generating sustaining income for the restaurant's operation. Bloom Restaurant in Hue will be modeled and managed by ACWP-sponsored graduates from Hoa Sua in Hanoi. Additional staffing are selected students, based on criteria that designate them as "disadvantaged" young adults. These students are primarily in the equivalent age of high school juniors and seniors (from 17 to 19 years old). Our local ACWP Program Leader will review all students' applications and conduct thorough interviews to determine suitability to the program. In addition, Hoa Sua Training Restaurant will continue its partnership with ACWP by providing leadership in hospitality services, operations and management training. Foodies will be glad to hear that Bloom Restaurant will feature regional Vietnamese and European cuisine with an American flair. What a way to be mindful and enjoy your food while also knowing that you are supporting a disadvantaged youth in becoming a self-sufficient adult. "We're very excited of Bloom Restaurant and invite the ACWP family and international community to try our new training restaurant," said Benjamin Lee, ACWP's Chairman. "The Bloom Restaurant will make its debut as the first ACWP training restaurant which we hope, will be ACWP's signature training program throughout other cities in Vietnam. Our plan for the new training restaurant is to create a supportive, fast-paced learning environment while providing scholarships for disadvantaged youths or teaching opportunities for graduates. The training restaurant will provide many opportunities for these youths to break the cycle of poverty. Bloom Restaurant was a dream that came true for ACWP, Inc. -- thank you for believing in ACWP." For more progress and updates, please contact Benjamin Lee at (408)225-0405 or benjaminlee@acwp.org if you have any questions. (less)

The training restaurant will provide many opportunities for these youths to break the cycle of poverty. Bloom Restaurant was a dream that came true for ACWP, Inc. -- thank you for believing in ACWP." THE REAL MCKENZIES @ The Colonial Theater in Sacramento, CA on the 2003 Fat Wreck Tour also on the bill were RISE AGAINST, FABULOUS DISASTERS & MAD CADDIES. Real McKenzies is a Scottish-influenced Celtic punk band founded in Vancouver, Canada in 1992. All, or most, of the band members have Scottish heritage. In addition to writing and performing original music, Real McKenzies resurrect traditional Scottish songs, giving them a new punk-influenced sound. They include bagpipes in all of their studio albums and at most of their concerts. Lead singer Paul McKenzie leads a high-energy act that tours extensively, including an eight-month, 23-country tour in a van. On some of these tours, they have shared stages with Rancid, DragStrip Riot, NOFX, Flogging Molly, The Misfits, Metallica, Voodoo Glow Skulls and even Shane MacGowan. Their songs have been used in beer commercials and featured in video games such as Tony Hawk Underground. http://www.myspace.com/therealmckenziess The modern-day Celtic bards known as The Real McKenzies hail from Vancouver, BC and are a punk band deeply rooted in their Scottish heritage with a sound best described as the Sex Pistols meet Scottish folk legend Robbie Burns. The Scottish term Ceilidh (pronounced kee-lee), is the main reason why the Real McKenzies formed and their chief inspiration. Ceilidh, according to the McKenzies, is a Gaelic word meaning "A wicked party which carries on for days". Founded by frontman Paul McKenzie in 1994, he cites his family as another motivating factor, "As a lad, my parents and grandparents would dress me up in a kilt and make me sing and dance to traditional Scottish music. Starting a Scottish punk band is my way of getting revenge!" You're probably wondering how it is that group of Canadians can rightly rollick and roam the countryside in the name of Scotland. Paul McKenzie offers an explanation, "A great many Scots immigrated to Canada. Ya see, the Scottish went north and the Irish went south...as they often do." The Real McKenzies have just finished up recording their latest full length 10,000 Shots, at San Francisco's esteemed Motor Studios with Fat Mike behind the knobs. 10,000 Shots is their first album for Fat Wreck Chords and it follows up two full lengths on Honest Don's: Loch'd & Loaded and Oot & Aboot. No doubt about it though, this is their best sounding record thus far and it always helps to get these drunks in a proper studio with someone urging them along. Guitarist Dirty Kurt clearly explains, "We don't wanna cut into our drinkin' time, so we spend as little time as possible in the studio." Makes perfect sense to us. The Real McKenzies are proven warriors of the road, having toured North America six times and Europe (where they draw huge crowds) five times. They've toured and played shows with Rancid, Shane MacGowan, NOFX, Flogging Molly, The Bay City Rollers (yep, it's true), The Briefs, and many more. Always touring, always drinking, and always rockin', the haggis-fueled McKenzie clan is hearty bunch that desires only to bring their brand of Celtic punk rock to every remote corner of the globe. Dirty Kurt puts it best, "We've been through tons of members, tons of broken bones, and tons of beer." Their unending tour schedule would make William Wallace himself exhausted. Always performing in full Highland regalia, the Real McKenzies are a true credit to their ancestors. For their live show they don kilts, high stockings, and sporrans (those weird belt thingies). And you really have to see the size of their bagpipe player's mohawk to truly appreciate it! Okay okay, so it's not entirely traditional, but their live show is hands down the rowdiest punk show this side of Glasgow. These inclusive punks see to it that everyone has a good time and a stiff drink in their hand. Preferably Scotch.. http://www.thepunksite.com/interviews.php?page=realmckenzies

LANSING -- Thousands of drivers and homeowners from across the state gathered today at the Capitol to protest high insurance rates and to urge action on SB 37 and SB 38. The bills, sponsored by Sen. Martha G. Scott (D-Highland Park) would create the Make Insurance Affordable and Accessible (MIAA) Task Force and ban territorial rating in setting insurance premiums. They were supported by dozens of legislators and political leaders, including a surprise appearance by Gov. Jennifer Granholm, who briefly joined the crowd in their "MOVE THOSE BILLS" chants. "This demonstration shows that there are thousands of residents frustrated by the exorbitant costs of a product that is required by law," Sen. Scott said. "They are here to tell legislators that they want relief and they want it now." Sen. Scott's bills were introduced in January of this year and are languishing in the Economic Development and Regulatory Reform Committee, where members have yet to take up the bills. A package of bills to be introduced next month would allow the Insurance Commissioner to rule that rates are excessive; prohibit the use of credit scoring and other socio-economic based factors in setting premiums; allow the Insurance Commissioner to order refunds; and allow policyholders to ask the Attorney General to intervene if rates are found excessive. In addition, it would require the Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association be subject to the Open Meetings Act, with the Insurance Commissioner a voting member. It would also prohibit surcharges for gaps in coverage. "In 1978, the Michigan Supreme Court ruled that the state has a duty to guarantee that insurance is available to everyone at a fair and equitable price," Sen. Scott said. "The people are saying that it's time to honor that promise." # # # http://www.senate.mi.gov/scott/pr.php?id=712

Drinking your sweet lips. Here's I return to you My eternal love for you Our ancient school, our friends and memories Don't be sad because of me Misery and suffering is never ending Here's for you. Here's what I return to you. The full broad blue sky...

Nassim Nicholas Talem PhD is an essayist, belletrist, & researcher only interested in one single topic, chance (particularly extreme & rare events, the "Black Swans" i.e. outliers); but it falls at the intersection of philosophy/epistemology (skepticism; knowledge about the dynamics of history; inferential claims), philosophy/ethics (stoicism facing random events; theories of nonhedonic happiness), mathematical sciences (probability theory, statistical physics), social science/finance (opacity & decision making under incomplete information), and cognitive science (the mental biases making us "fooled" by randomness). He mainly derives his intuitions from a 2-decade long and intense practice of derivatives trading ("nondull" activities with plenty of randomness. Academic & Teaching: Starting September 2007, London Business School (visiting 3 months a year while living mostly in NY) : Professor of ... Marketing (sic!) & co-director of the Decision Science Laboratory (Black Swans are mainly positive "hits"). Dan Goldstein ( also Wiki) and I are starting the "ecological uncertainty" project running a family of experiments on the intuition of randomness. On leave as the Dean's Professor in the Sciences of Uncertainty University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Fellow & Adjunct Professor of Mathematics at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences of New York University (since 1999), and affiliated faculty, Wharton School Financial Institutions Center. My most enjoyable teaching experience is the 2 --day seminar I co-teach with Paul Wilmott twice a year. Trading/Finance: Currently Founder, Empirica LLC, which owns interests in hedge funds, and operates a research laboratory in London Empirica Laboratory Limited and a Hedging operation (no, it is not a "hedge fund" in the common accepted sense as the bulk of the business consists in portfolio protection packages. We only called it a HF in May-October 2001). Was inducted in the Derivatives Strategy Derivatives Hall of Fame (Feb 2001). I was mostly a prop trader until 1993, then became more arbitrage oriented. I held positions of managing director and head trader at Union Bank of Switzerland, worldwide chief derivatives trader for currencies, commodities and non-dollar fixed income at CS-First Boston, chief currency derivatives trader for Banque Indosuez (age 25), Managing Director and worldwide head of financial option arbitrage at CIBC-Wood Gundy, derivatives arbitrage trader at Bankers Trust, proprietary trader at BNP-Paribas, as well as independent option market maker on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (...). Here's what tourists are saying about beautiful Asmara, Eritrea. ------ The capital of newly independent Eritrea, Asmara is one of the most beautiful and pleasant cities in the whole of Africa, if not anywhere in the World. Situated at an elevation of 2400 metres above sea-level, its climate is pleasantly cool, but also dry and sunny for much of the year. Architecturally, it is a real feast for the eyes. Having been the centre of Italian colonial efforts in Africa in the first part of the 20th century, Asmara was blessed with beautiful buildings that would only draw praise in Italy as well. Even after the Italians were gone, the city has managed to escape the raveges of third world development, and has amazingly even survived the wars with Ethiopia intact. Current government policies also prevent it from become yet another sprawling, polluted African capital ringed with slums. Not only is Asmara beautiful, clean and pleasantly cool, it is also a very safe and relaxed city, where one can walk around at any time of the day or night without having to worry about safety, or even more minor hassles like beggars. The locals are a very cultured lot who seem to pride themselves on their city's Italian heritage, fondly call it "Little Rome", and cafeterias and pizzerias do a roaring trade along the city's main avenue. And in case you start wondering whether all this comes at a price, you might be delighted to hear that Asmara is also among the cheapest capitals in the continent! Not surprisingly, this is one of the few places that visitors almost invariably fall in love with instantly. http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/2e789/1ebe77/ ======== If there is a country that has ever deserved the overused titles like "hidden gem" or "overlooked jewel", Eritrea is it. The mere name of this country along the Red Sea coast of East Africa tends to provoke blank looks from most people: "Eritrea??? What... err... where is it, actually???" History is partly to blame for sure. Under foreign occupation for centuries, Eritrea only appeared on the maps as an independent country in 1993, when its people have voted for leaving Ethiopia after decades of armed struggle. And ever since then, it has only hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons. So that is why Eritrea is largely unknown to the World, but what makes it a gem? First and foremost, its capital Asmara is the single most beautiful city in Africa, and an ethernal favourite of all those who have been there. Its history as an Italian colonial town has blessed it with an architectural legacy that would draw praise even in Europe. Beautiful buildings apart, the Italians have also left behind their impact on the local culture: cafeterias, pizzerias and fashionably dressed locals (including Africa's most beautiful women) make you feel far removed from the hectic, poverty-stricken and polluted cities of the rest of the continent. To further ensure a pleasant stay, Asmara's climate is as pleasant as it gets, with cool, dry, sunny weather throughout the year. Wishing for something more exotic? Asmara may feel like a piece of Italy, but out in the country you will find an amalgam of African cultures at their best. The highland plateu of southern Eritrea shares the ancient Orthodox Christian traditions of neighbouring Ethiopia, the peoples inhabiting the deserts to the west and along the Red Sea coast exhibit Muslim culture at its most colorful, while animistic, tribal Africa is represented by the Kunama and Nara of the south-west. The landscapes range from lush, cool highlands to the hottest, most desolate deserts anywhere, towns and villages exhibit a curious mixture of traditionally African and Mediterranian influences, and wildlife, while nowhere nearly as abundant as in Kenya or Tanzania, is varied and includes many rare species. Nevertheless, what really gives a lasting impression of Eritrea is her people. Eritreans are among the most educated, dignified and hospitable people I have met anywhere, and the begging, thievery and hassles encountered elsewhere in Africa quickly fade into distant memories here. I visited Eritrea in 2004, as part of a three-month-long tour of North-East Africa, that also took me to neighbouring Ethiopia, Sudan, Djibouti and Somaliland. Due to Eritrea's relationship with these neighbours getting here required quite an amount of persistance and determination, but once I arrived, I felt it was all worth it. Eritrea has immediately became my favourite country in Africa, and I can only wish to return for a longer stay in the future. If you are at all thinking about visiting this country, think no more - go! In A Nutshell: "My favourite country in Africa!" http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/2e789/e04/
