Ustad Abdul Karim Khan lived from November 10, 1872 to 1937. He is widely considered to be one of the most important figures in Hindustani music of the 20th century. Abdul Karim Khan was born in Kirana (Uttar Pradesh, North India) in to the Kirana musical family which traced its roots to musician brothers Ghulam Ali and Ghulam Maula. His father, Kale Khan was the grandson of Ghulam Ali. Karim Khan received training under uncle Abdulla Khan and father Kale Khan. He also received guidance from another uncle Nanhe Khan. Apart from vocals and sarangi, he also learnt Veena (Been), Sitar and Tabla. According to a story, he was initially a sarangi player, but decided to switch to vocals because of low status of sarangi players. In early years he used to sing with his brother Abdul Haq. The Baroda ruler was impressed by this singing duo and made them the court musicians. This is where he met Tarabai Mane, who was the daughter of Sardar Maruti Rao Mane, a member of the royal family. When they decided to get married, they were ousted from Baroda. The couple settled down in Bombay. In 1922 Tarabai Mane left Abdul Karim Khan, which apparently had a major impact on his music - making it pensive and meditative. Karim Khan's first wife, Gafooran was the sister of another Kirana master Ustad Abdul Wahid Khan, who was also his cousin. (Hummaa)

NAO ANO RE bhai © Jasim Uddin from PADMAPAR by Jasim Uddin Nao ano re bai nao ano re Rajani prbhat holo rebhai Nao ano re. • Nao ano re Music and Lyrics Jasim Uddin It calls : Bring the boat, dear friend, bring the boat The night is passing out Bring the boat, dear friend, bring the boat. "Bangladesh is the land of rivers. Ganga, Meghna, Dhaleshwari, Shitalakshya, Gadai - in so many names and in such myriad forms these rivers encircle Bangladesh. Playing on the silvery strings of the rivers, an invisible musician has with his delicate touch composed the song of its heart- the bhatiyali . Several areas remain submerged in rainwater for almost six months in a year, with the boat the only mode of transport . . . separated from their families for months on end, they have for their companion only the river on which they row their boats, with the waters merging into the horizons, and the azure heavens above. It is as if the waters are limitless. And the boatman, in his solitude questions his own existence - where have I come from? Where do I go hence? such questions pervade the songs of boatmen. Like the lyrics of these songs which have taken shape from the waters of these rivers, the tunes too have blended into the lyrics from the lilting waters of the rivers." - Jasim Uddin, "Murshida Gaan", Dhaka, 1977 FROM PADMAPAR by Jasim Uddin

Roshan Ara Begum (1917 - 1982) became one of the most important woman in the history of Hindustani classical music. As the daughter of Ustad Abdul Haqq Khan, Roshan Ara linked through her cousin Ustad Abdul Karim Khan to Kirana Gharana, a famous musical tradition, of whom she was the most outstanding disciple. Possessing a rich, mature and mellifluous voice that could easily lend itself to a wide range of intricate classical music pieces, Roshan Ara employed her natural talent in the promotion of the art, which requires a high degree of cultivation and training. Her singing features a full-throated voice, short and delicate passages of sur, lyricism, romantic appeal and swift taans. All these flourishes were combined in her unique style that reached its peak from 1945 to 1982. Her vigorous style of singing which was interspersed with bold strokes and perfect layakari, left no doubt that she was the greatest exponent of the Kirana Gharana style of khayal singing after the demise of both her mentor Ustad Abdul Karim Khan and his equally talented cousin Ustad Abdul Wahid Khan. watch her live videos: www.youtube.com www.youtube.com www.youtube.com
Here is an audio recording of Utd. Abdul Karim Khansahib, reviver of the Kirana Gharana (if not founder) singing the very popular "Prem Seva Sharan" Marathi Natyageet. One of the reasons Khansahib was so popular was that he picked up songs popular withing specific regions to gain popularity. Khansahib did this with Marathi Natya Sangeet. He has also sung the popular Natya Sangeet "Nachi Sundari Karu Kopa' (based on Raag Jajaiwanti). Many of Khansahib's students started off their careers (during and following tutelage) in Natya Sangeet, like Pt. Sawai Gandharva, Smt. Hirabai Badodekar and others. Many artists today feel that Marathi Natya Sangeet is a degeneration from the "more advanced" Hindustani Shastriya (Classical) Music. In this recording, Khansahib has completely deproved that now absurd belief. Enjoy! : )

She was also an expert in Khayal, Thumri, Marathi Natyageet and Bhajan. She was the popular face of classical music and credited with having popularized classical music among the masses. She was even chosen to sing 'Vande Mataram' from the Red Fort on Independence Day, in 1947. She started the Nutan Sangeet Vidyalaya for teaching music to girls from respectable families and staged several plays through the platform of this school. She also acted in several films, Suvarna Mandir, Pratibha, Janabai and Municipality. She became a recording artist quite early in her career. As was the norm in those days, recording companies changed the name of the artist to make it more appealing. That is how Champakali became Hirabai Barodekar. The early 78 rpm recordings have been re-rleased on cassettes by RPG in their Classical Gold series. Hirabai received several awards including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1955 and the Padma Bhushan in 1970. She visited China and the East African countries as part of the Indian delegation in 1953. She also trained a number of students such as Saraswati Rane, Prabha Atre, Malati Pande, Janaki Iyer, Shaila Pandit, Suvarna Chandrashekharan. Rambhau Kundgolkar, better known as Sawai Gandharva (1886 September 12, 1952), was a well known Hindustani vocalist. He was a disciple of Ustad Abdul Karim Khan and helped make the Kirana Gharana famous. Sawai Gandharwa was born in Kundagol, near Dharwad, in Karnataka in 1886. Although not from a musical family, he was keenly interested in music. He started his training in classical music under the tutelage of Ustad Abdul Karim Khan. After completing his training, Gandharwa joined a drama company and became a big hit as a singing star in Marathi theatre. He was with Govindrao Tembe's Shivraj Natak Mandali for some time. Although he became a well known classical vocalist, his most enduring legacy is that he trained great artists who would carry on the magic of the Kirana Gharana, like Gangubai Hangal, Bhimsen Joshi, and Feroze Dastur. Bhimsen Joshi holds the annual Sawai Gandharva Music Festival in Pune, in memory of his guru Sawai Gandharva.

Roshan Ara Begum (1917 - 1982) became one of the most important woman in the history of Hindustani classical music. Pakistanis revere her as Mallika-e-Mauseeqi or Queen of Music. As the daughter of Ustad Abdul Haqq Khan, Roshan Ara linked through her cousin Ustad Abdul Karim Khan to Kirana Gharana, a famous musical tradition, of whom she was the most outstanding disciple. Birth name Roshan Ara Begum Born 1917 Origin Calcutta, India Died December 6, 1982 Genre(s) Khayal, Qawwali, Thumri. Occupation(s) Hindustani Classical Music Instrument(s) Vocal Early life and training Born in Calcutta in or around 1917, Roshan Ara Begum visited Lahore during her teens to participate in musical soirées held at the residences of affluent citizens of Chun Peer in Mohalla Peer Gillaanian at Mochi Gate. During her occasional visits to the city she also broadcast songs from the then All India Radio station, and her name was announced as Bombaywali Roshan Ara Begum. She had acquired this popular nomenclature because she shifted to Bombay in the late 1930s to live near Ustad Abdul Karim Khan, from whom she took lessons in Hindustani classical music for fifteen years. Her performance in Chun Peer's abode in early 1941 pleasantly surprised local heavyweights and connoisseurs with her expertise in rendering classical compositions. In Bombay, she lived in a sprawling bungalow with her husband Chaudhry Mohammed Hussain, a police officer. [edit] Repertoire Possessing a rich, mature and mellifluous voice that could easily lend itself to a wide range of intricate classical music pieces, Roshan Ara employed her natural talent in the promotion of the art, which requires a high degree of cultivation and training. [edit] Career Before her migration to Pakistan, Roshan Ara had already become acclaimed as the greatest exponent of Kirana Gharana style of khayal singing in the undivided India. She embodied in her art all the exquisite tonal qualities and attributes of her mentor's delicate style of classical vocalization. She proved equally good at alap while delineating raags and also in taking breezy taans in the strand of her Ustad. She was very conscious of her dignity and status and never allowed herself to be emotionally swayed. But when the recording of her Ustad's music was played, her eyes filled with tears. from en.wikipedia.org
The Grand Master and one of the greatest wielders of the Anicient Sarangi. Ustad Masit Khan Sahib was born around 1888-89. Influenced by Ustad Bundu Khan Sahib, he came to Mumbai in 1920 and accompanied leading vocalists like Kesarbai, Ustad Abdul Karim Khan and Mallikarjun Mansur, He was loved for his style. Ustad Faiyaz Khan was enamored of his playing. Pt Omkarnath Thakur called him his right hand and said whenever he sang; he imagined Masit Khan was present. In Raag Desi, Ustad Masit Khan Sahib gives us a true glimpse of eternity. How pure his music, and charming his style. Such wizardry is rare on the Sarangi. The Sarangi is a bowed, short-necked lute of the Indian subcontinent. It is an important bowed string instrument of India's Hindustani classical music tradition. Of all Indian instruments, it is said to most resemble the sound of the human voice able to imitate vocal ornaments such as gamakas (shakes) and meend (sliding movements). The word sarangi is derived from two words: sau (meaning "hundred") and rang (meaning "colour"). This is because the sound of the sarangi is said to be as expressive and evocative as hundred colours.
