The Book Called: The Marine Corps Marathon by GB
Thanks so much to everyone on the Operation Homefront Marine Corps Marathon who worked so hard to make the race a success! Kimberly Ruiz was an inspiration to us all. The marathon fell on the first anniversary of the death of her husband, Marine Sgt. Cesar Ruiz.
A first-person view of what it's like to run the Marine Corps Marathon, and yes I know it's shaky at times (I'm running after all), but hope you enjoy. I ran this race October 31, 2010. Here are some additional details about each segment, if you're curious: Runners Village - this is where the runners gather and prep before the race. Mile 1 - Rosslyn, VA Mile 2 - Arlington, VA heading towards Spout Run Mile 10 - Starts with Marine One (Presidential Helicopter) as we start to pass the Kennedy Center in DC Mile 13 - Hains Point (very quiet, minimal crowd support) Mile 15 - What a water stop looks like. Mile 16 - Passing the Lincoln Memorial Mile 17 - On Constitution Ave (between the Mall and the White House Mile 18 - The turn-around point near the Capitol Mile 19 - A bag piper outside of the Smithsonian Mike - A friend of mine running the Marine Corps flag for a fellow marine who wasn't able to run the race because of being stationed overseas Mile 20 - The Bridge where most runners hit "the wall" (when your legs start to shut down on you) Mile 23 - Crystal City, VA George - A fellow DSG runner, whom I ran with until the end Mile 26 - The start of the final sprint up the steep hill towards the finish line
Some sights from my 12th consecutive running of the Marine Corps Marathon, 35th annual edition on 31 October 2010. It's also known as the People's Marathon as no prize money is awarded, the field is made of amateur runners. Entry was capped at 30000, about 22000 finished the 26.2 mile course beginning and ending near the Iwo Jima Memorial in Arlington, Virginia and winding through the heart of Washington DC. The MCM started in 1976 and has grown to the fourth largest marathon in the United States, eighth largest in the world. NOTE - all comments heard are by other runners and spectators, not me...
This is a video of the full 35th Marine Corps Marathon passing by at approximately the 2.5 mile mark (after that brutal climb up Lee Hwy). Part I has most of the 2-, 3-, and 4-wheeling category. Many costumes this year since the race was on Oct. 31 including Superman and many Wonder Womans. This video is at the suggestion of Stephanie at www.thelocalmassagetherapist.com (who has special deals for event participants). Enjoy!
www.runningskirts.com The 2010 Marine Corps Marathon and 10k was held on Halloween running through beautiful Washington DC and Northern Virginia with both the 10K and Marathon finishing at the Arlington Cemetary. Running Skirts were seen in action throughout the scenic course, the new fall collection "argyle and polka dot printed skirts and the very popular skirt camp camo. Congratulations to all the runners that participated, this was the marathon's 35th anniversary and was held on the same day as the historic Athens Marathon which celebrated its 2500th year anniversary.
Imagine running the very streets and sights of Washington, DC featured in such movies/shows as West Wing, No Way Out, Forrest Gump, X Files, Dave, The American President and many more. The Marine Corps Marathon provides just such a venue while elevating your spirit and national optimism. The 2010 Marine Corps Marathon filled in only 6 days with 30000 registrants and this video is a short recap of the race itself and a tribute to all these brave souls to face these 26.2 memorable miles. Congratulations!
One day prior to the Marine Corps Marathon could not be better spent than a morning reflecting at some of this nation's greatest memorials and monuments and then a light-hearted afternoon enjoying this country's First Amendment at the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear. Best of luck and an early congratulations to all participants of the 2010 Marine Corps Marathon tomorrow.

There is only one thing that comes close to matching the excitement of running a marathon and that is the anticipation of the days leading up to the race itself. The Marine Corps Marathon, situated in the historic city of Washington, DC, lends itself to that added bonus of anticipation.

Relive the 2009 Marine Corps Marathon - brought to you by MarathonFoto
Day 4 was a 3 mile run, nice easy pace. It was really windy and the temp was in the low 80's, Great! Day 5, REST!!!! Day 6, Today I was suppose to run 6 miles, I got lost and ran about 6.8. I've been figuring out the HRM a little better so here's some stats: 120 mins, average HR was 158 bpm, 1246 calories burned, 12312 steps.
Today was a 3 mile run. I wasn't able to get my chest strap to sync with heart rate monitor, so hopefully I'll be able to resolve that issue by tomorrow.
