I was doing OK with the "my friends" and the evil chuckle when I heard him talk about his POW story of the cross in the dirt. That was when I couldn't take it anymore. rickrocket's diary :: :: It just sounded so fake and so contrived, so I did a little research about it. Someone on here said it sounded like a scene from Ben-Hur, so I did a google search about Ben-Hur and cross in the sand and such. No dice. But I searched around a little bit more and here is what I found. A story about Alexander Solzhenitsyn from his times in the Soviet Gulags. Along with other prisoners, he worked in the fields day after day, in rain and sun, during summer and winter. His life appeared to be nothing more than backbreaking labor and slow starvation. The intense suffering reduced him to a state of despair. On one particular day, the hopelessness of his situation became too much for him. He saw no reason to continue his struggle, no reason to keep on living. His life made no difference in the world. So he gave up. Leaving his shovel on the ground, he slowly walked to a crude bench and sat down. He knew that at any moment a guard would order him to stand up, and when he failed to respond, the guard would beat him to death, probably with his own shovel. He had seen it happen to other prisoners. As he waited, head down, he felt a presence. Slowly he looked up and saw a skinny old prisoner squat down beside him. The man said nothing. Instead, he used a stick to trace in the dirt the sign of the Cross. The man then got back up and returned to his work. As Solzhenitsyn stared at the Cross drawn in the dirt his entire perspective changed. He knew he was only one man against the all-powerful Soviet empire. Yet he knew there was something greater than the evil he saw in the prison camp, something greater than the Soviet Union. He knew that hope for all people was represented by that simple Cross. Through the power of the Cross, anything was possible. Solzhenitsyn slowly rose to his feet, picked up his shovel, and went back to work. Outwardly, nothing had changed. Inside, he had received hope. [From Luke Veronis, "The Sign of the Cross"; Communion, issue 8, Pascha 1997.] So, it is very interesting that Mr. Solzhenitsyn and Mr. McCain had the same Christian guard/prisoner experience. Or maybe it is all just a made up story. Somehow I doubt that Alexander Solzhenitsyn heard John McCain's story and copied it. UPDATE: This story was actually excerpted from "The Gulag Archipelago" by Alexander Solzhenitsyn, which was released in the US in 1973.

Friday, May 9th, 2008 At 5:30pm starting in Santa Monica, 28 bicyclists took surface streets to the 1-10 Fwy at Bundy and rode 0.44 miles to the I-405 N on-ramp and rode another 1.56 miles to the Santa Monica Blvd. exit during rush hour. The ramp to the I-405 N was a steep grade and 0.65 miles in length. Riders spanned a total of 2.0 freeway miles. The group of riders also hung a 20'x6' banner on the 17th street overpass overlooking the eastbound I-10 Freeway in Santa Monica that read RIDE A BIKE YOU'D BE HOME BY NOW. In this episode of Digital Journal TV, we take you inside MySpace to get their reaction on competition from the ultimate F-word (Facebook), how the company believes Google can help them grow, and what the future holds for this social networking behemoth. MySpace is arguably the godfather of social networks. The site attracts more than 110 monthly active users around the world and the company says it's the most trafficked site in the U.S. MySpace is also localized and translated in 20 different international territories. But company execs have no doubt been screaming a certain F-word recently: Facebook. The competition is heating up between these two social networking giants, and MySpace is not about to sit back and read about its demise in a news feed. The growing threat from Facebook finally got News Corp. boss Rupert Murdoch to talk about it, albeit in a we-are-better sort of way. While delivering the company's quarterly profit results, Murdoch said, "Obviously MySpace's most talked about competitor is Facebook. While it has grown rapidly over the past several months, it is still only 45 per cent of MySpace in terms of unique users." Murdoch went on to say the two platforms are very different for the user. "MySpace pages become a home on the Internet, it's where they discover people, content and culture," he said. "Facebook, on the other hand, tends to be a Web utility, similar to a phone." But MySpace also faces growing challenges from countless other social networks, as the Internet is littered with competition. However, a lot of experts saying the social networking battle will rest heavily on how much it's adopted by advertisers. MySpace earned some points in this area this week with the launch of a new ad platform that targets advertising more effectively, as well as allowing local businesses a chance to get in the game. "Performance lifts 300 per cent for those using hyper targeting," Murdoch boasted. The company also announced a partnership with Google's OpenSocial network recently, which provides a lot of potential for future growth, but it forces the company to indirectly have the same features as the competition. Four North Carolina Teens Killed In Car Crash- Memorial Day weekend 2007 Four friends were killed in a high speed wreck that was so forceful it ripped out seat belts and sliced the car in half, police say. Davidson County, NC -- The wreck occurred early Saturday near Thomasville. Robert King, 20, of Trinity; Jacob Mayo, 19, of northern Davidson County; John "Chad" Calvert, 18, of Thomasville, and Zachary Main, 18, of Kernersville, died in the wreck. Police said alcohol was suspected in the wreck and a blood test was being conducted on the driver. Mayo was driving a 1998 Nissan Altima which ran off both sides of Burton Road, ran a stop sign, hit a wire and then a tree, which cut the car in half, said Highway Patrol Trooper Mickey Mantel. He declined to release an estimate of the speed. "It's going to put a real damper on this summer and it's going to make a lot of people reconsider what they do. It's going to make a lot of people cautious," says Christopher John, a friend of one of the victims. The crash was discovered about 8:45 a.m. by a passing driver, who saw a body lying in a field The crash happened about a hundred yards away from the Hasty Fire Department. Firefighters there say they heard a loud sound around 2 a.m. Saturday. But it wasn't until a driver passed by around 9 a.m. when they reported the crash. One firefighter says they thought a car went into a ditch and was able to get out. As of late Saturday, the Highway Patrol said seven people had died in wrecks across the state during the Memorial Day weekend.
