A Walt Disney treasure from 1929. The clock strikes midnight, the bats fly from the belfry, a dog howls at the full moon, and two black cats fight in the cemetery: a perfect time for four skeletons to come out and dance a bit. *Part of this video is featured in the intro for "Disney's Halloween Treat" and "A Disney Halloween."

Andrew Dewey Kirk - (May 28, 1898 in Newport, Kentucky December 11, 1992 in New York City) was a jazz bass saxophonist and tubist best known as a bandleader. He started his musical career playing with George Morrison's band, but then went on to join Terrence Holder's Dark Clouds of Joy. In 1929 he was elected leader after Holder departed. Renaming themselves Twelve Clouds of Joy they set up in the Pla-Mor Ballroom on the junction of 32nd and Main in Kansas City and made their first recording for Brunswick Records that same year. Mary Lou Williams came in as pianist at the last moment, but she impressed Brunswick's Dave Kapp, so she became a regular member of the band. The pianist she replaced, Marion Jackson, did not take well to this but otherwise Kirk's band would be fairly stable with the incorporation of Williams. In 1942, Kirk and His Clouds of Joy recorded "Take It and Git", which on October 24, 1942, became the first single to hit number one on the Harlem Hit Parade, the predecessor to the Billboard R&B chart. In 1948, Andy Kirk folded the band and continued to do music after that, but eventually switched to hotel management and real estate and also served as an official in the Musicians' Union.

He appeared first as a star in the character of Abijah Booze in The Yankee Consul, and sang In the Days of Old. In his stage career, Hitchcock went back and forth between dramatic roles and ones in comic opera. Hitchcock also made several phonograph recordings of which many survive to lend an idea of what he sounded like. In 1925, Hitchcock appeared in a test film made by Lee DeForest in DeForest's Phonofilm sound-on-film process, in which Hitchcock performed a sketch from his revue Hitchy-Koo, which was originally produced on Broadway in 1917, 1918, 1919, and 1920. Cole Porter wrote the music for the 1919 version. Hitchcock was married to Freda Bowen from 1891 to 1903, and then was married to beautiful actress Flora Zabelle (1880-1968) from 1905 to his death in 1929. In one of her few movie roles, Zabelle appeared in the silent film The Red Widow (1916) opposite male lead John Barrymore. A clip from 1929's "Taming of the Shrew", starring superstar silent film couple Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford. This was Mary's second talkie after Coquette, and Doug's first. The film opened shortly before the stock market crashed, and subsequently did not do as well as hoped (though it wasn't a total flop). Mary and Doug would go on to make a handful of talkies separately, both retiring by 1934. Their marriage began to crumble with the making of this film, and they divorced in 1933. cashforex101.blogspot.com On the morning of Thursday, October 24, 1929, stock prices plummeted. Vast numbers of people were selling their stocks. Margin calls were sent out. People across the country watched the ticker as the numbers it spit out spelled their doom. The ticker was so overwhelmed that it quickly fell behind. A crowd gathered outside of the New York Stock Exchange on Wall Street, stunned at the downturn. Rumors circulated of people committing suicide. To the great relief of many, the panic subsided in the afternoon. When a group of bankers pooled their money and invested a large sum back into the stock market, their willingness to invest their own money in the stock market convinced others to stop selling. The morning had been shocking, but the recovery was amazing. By the end of the day, many people were again buying stocks at what they thought were bargain prices. On "Black Thursday," 12.9 million shares were sold - double the previous record. Four days later, the stock market fell again. Although the market had closed on an upswing on Black Thursday, the low numbers of the ticker that day had shocked many speculators. Hoping to get out of the stock market before they lost everything (as they thought they had on Thursday morning), they decided to sell. This time, as the stock prices plummeted, no one came in to save it. October 29, 1929, "Black Tuesday," is known as the worst day in stock market history. There were so many orders to sell that the ticker ...
Verrückte Jahre - 1929 - Der Schwarze Freitag New York, 25. (Quelle: www.phoenix.de)

A group of residents in a Queens senior residence recall the economic crash of 1929, and its aftermath.
