Plot synopsis (Continuation of clip II) ...During the hunt Charley kills a white buffalo, animal sacred to the Sioux, whose hide the Indian girl (Debra Paget) secretly gives Jimmy who uses it in a burial ritual for an indian friend murdered by Charley. Sandy rides into town to sell the hides and when he returns to camp, Sandy tells Woodfoot of his intention to free the Sioux woman and her child. Robert Taylor is Charley Gilson, a buffalo hunter from Dakota, who meets Sandy McKenzie (Stewart Granger), a well-known an ex-buffalo hunter, when all of his cattle are killed by a huge buffalo. Charley takes advantage of the opportunity and asks Sandy to join him in hunting buffalo, but Sandy refuses, he had abandoned the trade after growing weary of all the killing. But realizing he has no choice, Sandy finally agrees to become Charley's partner, and in town, he hires two men to round out the party: Jimmy O'Brien ( Russ Tamblyn) , a red-headed "half-breed" who has decided to leave the reservation and live as a white man, and Woodfoot (Lloyd Nolan), a peg-legged alcoholic who once was known as the best skinner in the territory. The hunt hasn't started yet, but Sandy, Woodfoot and Jimmy begins to know the violent temper of Charley, his human qualities: arrogance, greed, racism, lust, with virtually no regard for human beings and animals. A bushfire and several years of drought impoverish them, but they hold on against all adversity. When Kate Rudd (Evelyn Johnson) returns from her job teaching in the city, she falls for an eligible young farmer, Sandy Taylor (Arthur Greenaway). Dave and his sister Sarah (Charlotte Beaumont) also find sweethearts, although Dad tries to shoot one of them. Kate's wedding allows all grudges to be forgotten.
