The countryside in Hong Kong is very beautiful, thus we go out to one of the biggest wetland in North District here. We can see a lot of vegetables, birds, fish ponds and many many more fruits from the trees. Commentator: Gary Gustian Photo & Video: Kenji Angelo Visit: www.kenjiangelo.com
Meet Sara Kaweesa, A Rocha's National Director in Uganda. Sara lives at the A Rocha field base in the slums around Lubigi Wetland on the outskirts of Kampala. A Rocha Uganda is studying and protecting the wetland, important for many waterbirds and birds of prey, through their work with the local communities. Providing clean drinking water and finding new ways to dispose of sewage and rubbish is transforming lives, bringing health, dignity and hope to the people, whilst also reducing the pollution of the swamp. For a healthy wetland and healthy lives, donate to A Rocha Uganda today! www.arocha.org A Rocha is a Christian nature conservation organization, our name coming from the Portuguese for "the Rock," as the first initiative was a field study centre in Portugal. A Rocha projects are frequently cross-cultural in character, and share a community emphasis, with a focus on science and research, practical conservation and environmental education.
The video shows a wetland and a saltlick created by the Nam Theun 2 Power Company (NTPC) as part of the Nam Theun 2 Hydropower Project in Laos. The monitoring of their use -- counting tracks and collecting photos from infrared trip cameras -- is producing quantities of good data which over time will help identify the trends in population sizes of the ground animals to be calculated and the impacts of the management regimes assessed.
Six percent of the total area in Kenya comprises of wetlands, marshy areas and areas like river banks and lake shores where no developments should be erected. However with the population growing and illegal developments on wetlands coming up in various parts of the country, several wetland areas are threatened. William Mitsch, director of the Olentangy River Wetland Research Park and distinguished professor of environment and natural resources at The Ohio State University believes we have to let nature clean up the oil spill and that adding chemicals to the Gulf is the wrong thing to do. He also talks about levees and how some of them, if built, could be more disastrous to estuaries and the Gulf region than oil or hurricanes.
From stories of ancient Japan, India, and Israel...to the 19th century tales of Dickens, Wells, and Twain...and even the brilliant contemplations of Albert Einstein, the concept of time travel has fascinated people for centuries. Now the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Foundation is trying its hand at manipulating time. But instead of using fanciful machines or theories of relativity, they're tackling time with bulldozers and backhoes. Wild Side Guide Ken Tucker takes us to some West Tennessee bottomlands along the Hatchie River, where the TWRF is turning back time by restoring lost wetlands. It's important to note that this restoration project has paid for itself. The site is called a wetland mitigation bank, which means the TWRF receives credits for the wetlands that have been restored. These credits can be sold to offset or mitigate permanent wetland impacts somewhere else. (Say you build a road that results in losing 1 acre of wetlands...that means you must restore or re-create that lost acre somewhere else.) That means no money from license sales went into purchasing the property, which will eventually become a Wildlife Management Area and opened to the public. To find out more about the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Foundation and the many programs it's involved in, visit their website at www.twrf.net Here are some more Tennessee Wild Side episodes on wetlands and the Hatchie River watershed: www.tnwildside.com www.tnwildside.com www.tnwildside.com www.tnwildside.com To ...

See the damage a Mattamy Homes subdivision causes to the Forbes Watershed and a provincially significant wetland. The before and after footage is chilling and tells a story of what can happen when weak environmental legislation is combined with a ruthless developer and a City of Cambridge Planning Department and City Council who put the environment last on their list or priorities. The first 6 minutes of the video shows the wetland in 2000 the last three minutes show the subdivision in 2010 that wiped out the Forbes watershed and provincially significant wetland.

The media in Uganda has been awash with stories of land grabbing especially of wetlands, but Masaka district boasts of a success story in which Nakayima wetland, previously destroyed through encroachment, has been restored.
Talk by Robin M. Grossinger, scientist at the San Francisco Estuary Institute, given at the 2010 University of California Museum of Paleontology Short Course. Before development, the Bay's shoreline was a broad intertidal landscape comprising over 200000 acres of diverse wetland habitat types. While most were destroyed prior to 1900, their characteristics and spatial patterns are revealed in a remarkable array of historical documents. This talk will explore the historical landscape, its transformation, and how these data are contributing to contemporary restoration efforts.
