After the Market State: Phillip Blond on the Future of a Free Society. Society and the private sphere have become increasingly monopolized by the state and the market, which seem inadequate for dealing with increasing economic and social dysfunction. Phillip Blond, the influential Director of the London think-tank Respublica, www.respublica.org.uk argues for the necessity of the enduring bonds of family and local community, and the wide distribution of property and public responsibility that these require. Blond will outline the vision that has increasingly captured the attention of Britains Tory Party in his lecture, Red Toryism: What it means and why it is a genuinely radical alternative to the Market State.

Arjia Rinpoche, one of the most prominent religious leaders to escape Tibet since the Dalai Lama fled into exile, created the Buddhist Center for Compassion and Wisdom in Mill Valley, CA. Now, he is also the author of a memoir, Surviving the Dragon . Surviving the Dragon is the story of Arjia Rinpoche's life, growing up as the abbot of Kumbum, one of Tibet's major monasteries. Unlike other stories from Tibet, his memories are not those of suffering and torture under the Chinese but of suffering and fame. As a child, he was treated like a living Buddha; as a young man he emptied latrine; but after the death of Mao Tse Tung, he rose to prominence within the Chinese Buddhist bureaucracy. He became Vice-chairman of the Buddhist Association of China and was slated to become its Chairman.

Many graduates spend no more than a year at their first job right out of college. But for Villanova alumnus Thomas V. Sanzone, 68, EE, who is about to complete his 42nd year working with the same space contractor in Houston, things turned out differently. Two weeks after graduating with a degree in electrical engineering, Sanzone became involved in the Apollo program. Two years later, the life support systems of the company he worked for kept the Apollo 13 astronauts alive. A man of service and leadership, Sanzone since 1986 has managed the Houston office of Hamilton Sundstrand, a major contractor for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and its Johnson Space Center. Among his proudest achievements was working on the Apollo program and training astronaut Neil Armstrong to use the portable life support system. That was the backpack Armstrong wore when, on July 20, 1969, he became the first person to walk on the Moon.

Prior studies of portrayals of Asian Americans in advertising have found limited representation and portrayals that are skewed toward technology-based products, business and science magazines, and business settings and relationships. This presentation examines current Asian American portrayals. Findings indicate that, in spite of improved representation, stereotyped portrayals persist. The "model minority" stereotype, which suggests that Asian Americans are hard-working, technologically-savvy, business-oriented, successful, and well-assimilated is clearly reflected in advertising portrayals. While many of these stereotypes appear to be positive on the surface, in reality, some unsettling results can ensue when they are reinforced with the public. Portrayals of Asian Americans in family and social contexts are seldom seen. Moreover, even magazines with high Asian American readership reflect the same stereotypes. Societal and managerial implications of these findings are discussed.
On an iconic night 20 years ago, the Berlin Wall fell. That moment in November became a prolific image for the end of the Cold War and the reunion of a people. While that wall has faded into history, there are physical and cultural walls that continue to separate people across the globe. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., worked throughout his life to tear down the walls of segregation and oppression in American society. This session will discuss the meaning of the fall of the Berlin Wall and will examine walls that continue to separate humanity. The cases of Northern Ireland and Israel/Palestine will be used to inform a discussion of the US border with Mexico.
