Maud Powell (August 22, 1867 January 8, 1920) IMHO the best American violinist. MAUD POWELL - A Pioneer's Legacy by Karen A. Shaffer (edited to fit) Maud Powell was born on August 22, 1867, in Peru, Illinois, on the western frontier in the American heartland. Her grandparents had been Methodist missionaries in Ohio, Wisconsin, and Illinois before the Civil War. Her father William Bramwell Powell was an innovative educator; superintendent of the public schools in Peru, then Aurora, IL, and finally Washington, DC Her mother Minnie Paul Powell was a pianist and composer whose gender precluded a career. Minnie and Bramwell's sisters were active in the woman's suffrage movement. Maud's uncle John Wesley Powell, Civil War hero and explorer of the Grand Canyon, organized the scientific study of the western lands and the native Indians as the powerful director of the US Geological Survey and Bureau of Ethnology and founder of the National Geographic Society. A prodigy, Powell began violin and piano study in Aurora, Illinois, then studied violin four years with William Lewis in Chicago, to whom she "owed the most." She completed her training with Europe's greatest masters -- Henry Schradieck in Leipzig, Charles Dancla in Paris, and Joseph Joachim in Berlin. Returning to the United States knowing that "girl violinists were looked upon with suspicion," Powell boldly walked into a rehearsal of the all-male New York Philharmonic in Steinway Hall and demanded a hearing from Theodore ...

Irish pubs throughout the Central Coast are hosting big celebrations tonight in honor of Saint Patrick's Day. Green beer...as American as you can get, but behind all the drinking and decorations, there is a history. While you're swilling green beer, keep in mind the St. Patrick's Day history runs deeper than your beer mug. "I honestly. I don't know what the history is. It's always been just a good time with friends," said Christine Haas of Santa Maria. It began in the 1600s as a purely Catholic feast day, marking the death of Saint Patrick the patron saint of Ireland during the 5th century. "St. Patrick is buried like 10 miles from my town, so to be honest we don't celebrate it that much, so when I come here and it's completely mad, even to come to an Irish pub is quite funny," said Dean McKillen, visiting from Ireland. "Well, I know St. Patrick wasn't from Ireland," said James Meager, Sr. of Santa Maria. That's true. He was born in Britain and came back to Ireland to convert the early Pagans to Christianity. According to legend, St. Patrick used the three-leaved shamrock to explain the holy trinity. Corned beef and cabbage is an Irish-American tradition started by immigrants in the 19th century because beef was cheaper and easier to get than pork. "We're seeing more people drinking Guiness and Smithwicks and Murphy's and they're staying away from green beer," said Josh Snow, owner of O'Sullivan's in Santa Maria. Commercialized or not. . .Santa Maria residents have their ...
I am northern Irish and I made a tribute to saint pattys day. Although it happened yesterday I could only upload it today. I hope you enjoy it. The movie trailer I included is THE WIND THAT SHAKES BARLEY its about the Real and Good IRA in the 1920's who fought for Independence from England and got it. Its a excellent film. But it not about the 1980's fake and new IRA who is a terrorist group who kill innocent English people and Northern Irish people in the North. On Saint Patrick's day everyone can be Irish and have some Guinness Here are some cool facts you didn't know about Saint Patricks Day: * St. Patrick wasn't Irish(Born in England) * St. Patrick used the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity (the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit) to the Irish people. * The first St. Patrick's Day parade took place in the United States on March 17, 1762, when Irish soldiers serving in the English military marched through New York City. * There are 36.5 million US residents with Irish roots. This number is almost nine times the population of Ireland itself (more than four million). * More than 100 St. Patrick's Day parades are held across the United States. New York City and Boston are home to the largest celebrations. * At the annual New York City St. Patrick's Day parade, participants march up 5th Avenue from 44th Street to 86th Street. More than 150000 people take part in the event, which does not allow automobiles or floats. * Chicago is famous for a somewhat peculiar annual ...

In the ballad, the hod-carrier Tim Finnegan, born with a love for the liquor, falls from a ladder and is thought to be dead. The mourners at his wake become rowdy, and spill whiskey over Finnegans corpse, causing him to come back to life and join in the celebrations. Whiskey causes both Finnegans fall and his resurrection-whiskey is derived from the Irish phrase uisce beatha, meaning water of life.
early celebration for St.Patrick's Day , its should be 03/17 hehehe it correct huh here a bit of St.Patrick's Day for you guys to know more whats St.Patrick's day means " Many folk ask the question 'Why is the Shamrock the National Flower of Ireland ?' The reason is that St. Patrick used it to explain the Holy Trinity to the pagans. Saint Patrick is believed to have been born in the late fourth century, and is often confused with Palladius, a bishop who was sent by Pope Celestine in 431 to be the first bishop to the Irish believers in Christ."

Apostle of Ireland, born at Kilpatrick, near Dumbarton, in Scotland, in the year 387; died at Saul, Downpatrick, Ireland, 17 March, 461. Along with St. Nicholas and St. Valentine, the secular world shares our love of these saints. This is also a day when everyone's Irish. Local New York band Shilelagh Law perform original song, "Meet Me On McLean." The song is about a magical street where "the five boroughs [of New York] meet the four provinces [of Ireland]" and the Bronx meets Yonkers. Recorded at Connolly's on 45th St., Times Square after the parade. LYRICS Let me tell you 'bout a place I know, Where American kids and the Irish go, You can hear the jigs and reels up and down the street, Where New York City and Ireland meet, Let's all get together round a quarter to 10, Raise the first pint at The Hibernian, The bands there playing our favorite songs, We'll be dancing and singing tunes all night long, Yeah yeah.. It's the perfect mix of old and new, Something there for me, something there for you, Where North meets South and East meets West, Where the five boroughs meet the four provinces. Tell me bout your neighborhood, But no other place could ever be this good, Hope that this message is crystal clear, No need to look around, We got it all right here [CHORUS] So meet me on McLean tonight, Here the bars stay open til the broad daylight, Where the whiskey is smooth and the beer is cold, And the streets are paved green, white, and gold Meet me on McLean tonight, All the pretty girls make me feel alright, We'll all stay out til 5am, A little breakfast and a nap, And we'll do it again, [CHORUS] From Cork to Kerry, then there's Clare, Every county's represented there, Galway, Limerick, and Mayo, With Armagh, Tyrone, and Sligo, It's Dublin ...
Saint Patrick (Naomh Pádraig) (c. 390 - 460)( was a Roman Britain-born Christian missionary and is the patron saint of Ireland. Today Ireland celebrates the Feast Day of St. Patrick or St. Patricks Day. This is a national bank holiday in Ireland.
Using American Sign Language, (ASL) for the deaf , I want to share about the historical fact about the day on March 17, popularly known as St. Patrick's Day, is believed to be his death date and is the date celebrated as his feast day. As a result, St. Patrick has never been formally canonised by a Catholic Pope; nevertheless, various Christian churches declare that he is a Saint in Heaven (he is in the List of Saints). He is still widely venerated in Ireland and elsewhere today. St. Patrick is also venerated in the Orthodox Church, especially among English-speaking Orthodox Christians living in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland and in North America. There are Orthodox icons dedicated to him Saint Patrick was born at Banna Venta Berniae, Britain in around AD 387. Calpornius, his father was a deacon, his grandfather Potitus a priest. When he was about sixteen, he was captured and carried off as a slave to Ireland. Patrick worked as a herdsman, remaining a captive for six years. He writes that his faith grew in captivity, and that he prayed daily. After six years he heard a voice telling him that he would soon go home, and then that his ship was ready. Fleeing his master, he travelled to a port, two hundred miles away he says, where he found a ship and, after various adventures, returned home to his family, now in his early twenties. Patrick's position as a foreigner in Ireland was not an easy one. His refusal to accept gifts from kings placed him outside the ...
St. Patrick, known as the Apostle of Ireland, lived during the fourth and fifth centuries, and, due to his many popular followings, many legends exist concerning his life and his works. St. Patrick was born around the year 389 on the Island of Briton and considered himself to be both Roman and British. At the age of 16, he was captured by an Irish raiding party and sold into slavery. As a slave, Patrick worked as a shepherd and was given little to satisfy his needs. After six years of slavery, Patrick was given the chance to escape and he took it, traveling first to France and later back home. While in slavery, Patrick realized the spiritual need of the Irish people and decided to address this problem. After studying for the priesthood and ordination, Patrick began to seek support for his plan of being a missionary to Ireland. At the age of 46, Patrick was ordained a bishop and sent to Ireland as a missionary. At first, Patrick met with much resistance from the native pagan religions, but he soon began to instill a deep sense of Christianity through prayers, example, and instruction. Within a relatively short time of first embracing the Faith, Ireland was on fire with the Spirit and sending missionaries across the world to spread the Word of God. Patrick penned several works, some of which are still in existence, and shared much of his enthusiasms for the Faith with the people he converted. St. Patrick died around the year 461 and is buried in the area of Ulster in the ...

GREAT TIMING -St. Patrick was born in Britain. He was kidnapped at sixteen by the Irish and held as a slave for six years before he escaped on a boat back to Britain where he became a priest and eventually went back to Ireland as a missionary. It's what I was saying with a twist - he was enslaved, gained his freedom, but went back to those who previously enslaved him and was of broader service.

A music video tribute I made to the masterpiece show Six Feet Under. The theme song is by Death Cab for Cutie, from the soundtrack "Six Feet Under, Vol. 2: Everything Ends". It appeared in series 4 episode 6 - "Terror Starts at Home". Lyrics: The Atlantic was born today and I'll tell you how... The clouds above opened up and let it out. I was standing on the surface of a perforated sphere When the water filled every hole. And thousands upon thousands made an ocean, Making islands where no island should go. Oh no. Those people were overjoyed; they took to their boats. I thought it less like a lake and more like a moat. The rhythm of my footsteps crossing flatlands to your door have been silenced forever more. The distance is quite simply much too far for me to row It seems farther than ever before Oh no. I need you so much closer [x8] [instrumental break] I need you so much closer [x4] So come on, come on [x4] DISCLAIMER: I own none of these clips. Video was made for entertainment purposes only. Clips are property of HBO.

Patrick Wayne Swayze (August 18, 1952) is a three-time Golden Globe-nominated American actor, dancer and singer-songwriter. Son of Patricia "Patsy" Yvonne Helen (née Karnes) — a choreographer, dance instructor, and dancer — and Jesse Wayne Swayze, an engineering drafter. Although the surname "Swayze" is of Norman French origin, he is of mainly Irish descent, as well as some Apache ancestry. His brother, Don Swayze, is also an actor. Until age 20, Swayze lived in the Oak Forest neighborhood of Houston, where he attended St. Rose of Lima Catholic School, Oak Forest Elementary School, Black Middle School, and Waltrip High School. During this time, he also pursued multiple artistic and athletic skills, such as ice skating, classical ballet and acting in school plays. He studied gymnastics at nearby San Jacinto College for two years. In 1972, he moved to New York City to complete his formal dance training at the Harkness Ballet and Joffrey ballet schools. Swayze has been married to Lisa Niemi since 1975. The couple first met in 1970, when Lisa, then age 16, was taking dance lessons from Swayze's mother. Niemi was born in Houston, Texas to her Finnish-American parents, Edmond Melvin Haapaniemi and Edna Karin Hyttinen. As a reaction to his father's death by heart attack, in 1982, Swayze began to drink heavily. His sister Vicky passed away in 1994, leading him to seek treatment for alcoholism. After initial recovery, he temporarily withdrew from show business, retreating to his ...

I was born about ten thousand years ago In Bellmullet in the County of Mayo It was me that chased the vermin, while St. Patrick preached the sermon And I'll whoop the man that says it isn't so Singing rightful too-ra-laddie too-ra-lee There is no one who can tell a lie like me You can search until you tire, you won't find a bigger liar I've been lying since the dawn of history I saw Eve go pickin' apples off a tree She came over and she offered one to me I turned and said, "Dear madam, go try your luck with Adam I'm going home to have some fish and chips and tea." Singing rightful too-ra-laddie too-ra-lee There is no one who can tell a lie like me You can search until you tire, you won't find a bigger liar I've been lying since the dawn of history I saw Delilah cuttin' Samson's hair She snipped away until his head was bare When he couldn't run away, she married him next day And they opened a barber shop in Clare Singing rightful too-ra-laddie too-ra-lee There is no one who can tell a lie like me You can search until you tire, you won't find a bigger liar I've been lying since the dawn of history With King Billy at the Boyne I heard them call On his followers to follow till they fall Then he said, "We'll win quite easy, and we'll canonize, young Paisley" Then he up and sang a verse of Derry's Walls Singing rightful too-ra-laddie too-ra-lee There is no one who can tell a lie like me You can search until you tire, you won't find a bigger liar I've been lying since the dawn ...
