Heres a virtual movie of American Quaker poet and ardent advocate of the abolition of slavery John Greenleaf Whittier reading his elequent anti slavery poem "Ichabod" "Ichabod" appeared in the National Era, of which Whittier was an editor, on May 2, 1850. The title derived from I Samuel 4:21: "And she named the child Ichabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel." Whittier's use of the name Ichabod was a thinly veiled refernce to Senator Daniel Webster, whose speech in the Senate two months before had dismayed antislavery men in the North. Whittier described the poem's inception in a famous note. The birth of the poem, he said, was "the outcome of the surprise and grief and forecast of evil consequences which I felt on reading the seventh of March speech of Daniel Webster in support of the `compromise' and the Fugitive Slave Bill. One of the most stunning views in NC. This is from our deck on the Above & Beyond Cabin, Conley Mountain @ 4600 ft elevation. The fast moving black shapes at the end are bats that come out at dusk. Each clip is about an hour long sped up to 3000% using final cut studio.

Recorded July 20, 2000. The video begins in Valdez, Alaska as I board the Alaska Marine Highway vessel, the MV Bartlett. The highlight of my seven hour crossing of Prince William Sound was the appearance of an orca whale. As we sailed into Whittier we saw thousands of seabirds gather in their nesting grounds at the kittiwake rookery just across Passage Canal from Whittier. The video concludes as I drive off the ferry and pass through North Americas longest vehicle tunnel the 2.5-mile Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel.
