The WinStar Farm of Bill Casner and Kenny Troutt got another bookend for this year's Triple Crown on Saturday when 13-1 shot Drosselmeyer won the 142nd Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park, five weeks after WinStar won the Kentucky Derby with Super Saver. In both cases, veteran jockeys with previous classic victories brought successful trainers noteworthy Triple Crown race wins. On Saturday, it was jockey Mike Smith who came home with Drosselmeyer, giving Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott his first victory in a Triple Crown race. In the Derby, it was Calvin Borel who landed the first Derby victory for trainer Todd Pletcher. For Smith, it was his first victory in the Belmont following previous victories in the Derby and Preakness. He dedicated the win to jockey Richard Migliore, who announced his retirement on Wednesday. Both men were mainstays in the New York jockey colony for years. www.drf.com
Drosselmeyer was a surprise winner of the Belmont Stakes giving jockey Mike Smith his first win in the race and longtime trainer Bill Mott his first win in a Triple Crown race. (June 5)

WinStar Farm's Drosselmeyer gave Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott his first win in a Triple Crown race, wearing down pacesetter First Dude and holding off a late charge from Fly Down for a 13-1 upset in the $1 million Belmont Stakes (gr. I) under Mike Smith June 5 at Belmont Park. It was the first Belmont win in his 13th attempt for fellow Hall of Famer Smith, who guided the son of Distorted Humor to a three-quarters of a length score for his first stakes victory. The final time for the 1 1/2-mile third leg of the Triple Crown was 2:31.57 over a fast track. A crowd of 45243 came out on a hot, steamy day in Elmont, NY, to watch the 142nd running of the race. Drosselmeyer, who began his career racing on turf, was still eligible for a non-winners of two allowance race entering the Belmont. Fourth in the Risen Star (gr. II) and third in the Louisiana Derby (gr. II) at Fair Grounds, the chestnut colt fell short of the necessary graded earnings to make the May 1 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I). Instead of racing in the May 15 Preakness (gr. I), Mott decided to ship his charge to Belmont, where he finished a distant runner-up to Fly Down in the May 8 Dwyer Stakes (gr. II). www.bloodhorse.com

Belmont Stakes and Shadwell Travers winner Summer Bird wrote his way into the history books Saturday afternoon at Belmont Park, outdueling a game Quality Road through the stretch to win the 91st running of the Grade 1, $750000 Jockey Club Gold Cup. With the victory, Summer Bird became the first 3-year-old since 1989 to have won all three races in a single year. The handsome chestnut colt is just the 10th sophomore and first since Easy Goer to string together victories in the Belmont, Travers and Jockey Club Gold Cup. The other 3-year-olds who have won the trio of prestigious races in New York are Man oWar (1920), Twenty Grand (1931), One Count (1951), Gallant Man (1957), Sword Dancer (1959), Damascus (1967), Arts and Letters (1969) and Temperence Hill (1980). All but One Count and Temperence Hill are Hall of Famers. I think it puts him in an elite group, said 34-year-old Tim Ice, who trains the son of 2004 Belmont Stakes and Travers winner Birdstone for Drs. Kalarikkal and Vilasini Jayaraman. I think he should be champion 3-year-old colt.
ELMONT, NY - Summer Bird stated his case for being crowned 3-year-old champion while trying to enter the conversation for Horse of the Year with an easier-than-it looked one-length victory over Quality Road in Saturday's Grade 1, $750000 Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park. Summer Bird added the Jockey Club Gold Cup to victories earlier in the year in the Belmont Stakes and Travers Stakes, becoming just the 10th 3-year-old to capture all three races in the same year. He's the first to do it since Easy Goer in 1989. Others to do it include Temperence Hill, Arts and Letters, Damascus, One Count, Twenty Grand, Man o' War, Sword Dancer and Gallant Man. "It's been 20 years since a 3-year-old won the Belmont, Travers and the Gold Cup," trainer Tim Ice said. "I think it does put him in an elite group and he should be named 3-year-old [champion] colt." www.drf.com
It was the wrong year and the wrong horse, but the feelings boiling up within trainer D. Wayne Lukas were all right. Standing in the Belmont Park trustees' room, surrounded by a small group of people he did not know, Lukas stared intently at a television monitor, seeing his sleek chestnut charge Commendable gliding effortlessly to the lead as the field in the 132nd Belmont Stakes (G1) headed into the far turn. "Commendable is going to win the Belmont," Lukas declared matter of factly to a woman standing next to him. Few others in the crowd of 67810 who turned out in sultry heat and humidity for the grueling 1 1/2-mile classic contest on June 10 would have predicted that Commendable-who had earned only a maiden score from his previous seven career starts-would win. With not even a shrug of celebration, Lukas continued to watch the son of Gone West scamper down the stretch and across the finish line, defeating favored Aptitude, with Unshaded and Wheelaway in third and fourth, respectively. "When they hit the wire, this woman said, 'How did you know he would win?' " Lukas recounted. "I said, 'Because I train him.' She just about fell over. She said, 'Oh my God, my God. You're kidding! You never even moved.' "I didn't want to create a scene," Lukas said of his lack of an immediate reaction to the victory, which tied him with the late, legendary trainer James E. "Sunny Jim" Fitzsimmons for the most wins in Triple Crown races with 13, including four Belmont scores. There was ...

I DON"T OWN ANYTHING Edgar S. Prado (born June 12, 1967 in Lima, Peru) is a US Racing Hall of Fame jockey in thoroughbred horse racing. Now a resident of Hollywood, Florida in 2004 Prado became the 19th jockey in thoroughbred racing history to win 5000 races. On May 6, 2006, Prado rode Barbaro to victory in the 132nd Kentucky Derby, 6½ lengths ahead of the second finisher, Bluegrass Cat. The margin of victory was the largest since Triple Crown winner Assault won by eight lengths in 1946. Barbaro was pulled up following a horrific ankle injury during the Preakness Stakes two weeks later. Prado was visibly shaken, declining comment, but by all accounts his fast action on the track contributed to saving the colt's life. (However, Barbaro was euthanized by veterinarians at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center on January 29, 2007.) Other racing accomplishments include victories in the 2002 and 2004 Belmont Stakes, in each case aboard a longshot depriving a favorite of the United States Triple Crown. In 2002 Prado won the Belmont aboard Sarava, who is the longest shot to ever win the Belmont Stakes in its history at odds of 70¼/1. In 2004 Prado rode Birdstone to victory in the Belmont, denying heavy favorite Smarty Jones the Triple Crown. Prado and Birdstone then went on to win the prestigious Travers Stakes at the Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York in August 2004. Prado viva el peru had not won a Breeders' Cup race until 2005, when he won two ...
The 1993 Kentucky Derby winner faces off with multiple graded winner Fourstars Allstar.. Sea Hero, who won the Travers last August, raised memories of his past when he ran a strong second in the seventh race. He lost by only a neck to LEO O'BRIEN's 6-year-old warrior, Fourstars Allstar, who ran the mile and one-sixteenth in a fast 1:39/4 5 on the turf.
Easy Goer had returned in an allowance race at Belmont Friday, and proved that he is the nation's best 2-year-old and perhaps much more. He charged up the inside from well off the pace to score by 5 1/2 lengths over Winners Laugh, a colt who had won his only start by 14 lengths. His time of 1:15 2/5 for six and a half furlongs was just two-fifths of a second off the track record. ''When he ran that one-twenty-two and three at Saratoga, I really thought they'd made a mistake,'' McGaughey was saying yesterday morning. ''Sometimes something happens with the timer and I thought it was just impossible he ran that fast. But the way he ran Friday, it's for real. He does everything so smooth, he can fool you. You just don't know how fast he's going.'' Easy Goer's time of 1:15 2/5 Friday looks especially brilliant considering that later in the day, older allowance horses ran the same distance in 1:17. Easy Goer's performance earned the highest speed figure of any 2-year-old in New York since Devil's Bag won the Cowdin and the Champagne five years ago. It also earned a better figure than the last four juvenile champions - Chief's Crown, Tasso, Capote and Forty Niner - ever ran as 2-year-olds. Just as important, Easy Goer does not have the look of a speedball who will wilt as the distances get longer. He runs from off the pace and should only improve with distance. ''He's bright, too,'' said Mary Jane McGaughey, the trainer's wife and the colt's exercise rider. ''He likes to look at ...
Belmont Shore U19 Rugby takes 1st Place at the Back Bay Shark Fest 7's Rugby Tournament on 25 July 2009 in Costa Mesa, California. This isn't a highlight reel so you get to see most of the match. This final was against the Santa Monica U19 in green with Belmont Shore in blue. A very long day of rugby starting at 8:30am and ending with this match about 6pm. Notice Belmont Shore Men's side at start of the video. They had just won their final's match and stayed to encourage the boys prior to their U19 match. Belmont Shore won the U14, U19, & Men's Divisions at this tournament.
Nehantic Kat, owned by Statehouse Stables and managed by Parting Glass Racing's managing owner Tom Gallo, won at Belmont in a stake race called The Sabalina. It was a perfect ride by Rajiv Maragh in a small field on a sultry afternoon. NK got left in the gate but it worked to her advantage because Rajiv was able to put her behind horses and get her to relax. Words cannot describe the excitement of watching NK turn for home with plenty of steam, swinging 3 wide before easily getting in front, making what Tom Durkin called, 'A decisive win'. Congratulations to all her owners!
There were Triple Crown winners before him, and Triple Crown winners after him, but nobody swept through the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont Stakes with the same drama, style and flair as Secretariat. He won 16 of 21 races, graced the covers of several national magazines, was twice Horse of the Year, but it is the Belmont for which Secretariat is best remembered. On June 9, 1973, Big Red went postward as the 1-10 favorite to become the ninth Triple Crown winner, and the first in 25 years. Challenging him were Sham, who had finished second in both the Derby and the Preakness, and three other mismatched Thoroughbreds. When the gates opened, Secretariat and Sham and raced together around the first turn through a half-mile in a suicidal :46 2/5. On the backstretch, with jockey Ron Turcotte sitting still as a stone, the colt gathered momentum with every stride. He ran three-quarters in 1:09 2/5, the mile in 1:34 1/5, and when he hit the quarter-pole in 1:59, faster even than he had won the Derby, the crowd was on its feet, screaming in anticipation. Secretariat is alone. He is moving like a tremendous machine!" track announcer Chick Anderson yelled. "He's going to be the Triple Crown winner. Unbelievable! An amazing performance. He's 25 lengths in front!" Prompted only by history and racing only against the clock, Secretariat was completely alone as he swept across the finish line an astounding 31 lengths in front of Twice a Prince in a world-record 2:24 for the mile ...
Seattle Smooth wore down Seventh Street in the homestretch to win the Ogden Phipps Handicap by 1 1/4 lengths for her first grade I victory June 13 at Belmont Park. Owned by Mercedes Stable and trained by Tony Dutrow, Seattle Smooth won her fifth consecutive race, all coming in stakes, under a patient ride from jockey Ramon Dominguez. The 4-year-old daughter of Quiet American defeated a field that included a pair of Godolphin-owned grade I winners in Seventh Street and Music Note, who tired leaving the turn in her first start since the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic (gr. I). Dutrow won his first grade I race since Burning Roma won Belmont's Futurity in 2000. The Godolphin entry, which also included Darley's Sea Chanter, was sent off at odds of 1-5 in a field that included five betting interests. The final time for the 1 1/16-mile one-turn test for fillies and mares was 1:42.13 over a main track listed as 'good.' Seattle Smooth saved ground to the quarter pole, where she was angled out four paths by Dominguez to rally while splitting rivals. Seventh Street won a pace duel with the stubborn My Dinah, who battled the Apple Blossom Handicap (gr. I) winner through fractions of :23.45, :46.36 and 1:09.96, to take command in the stretch. But the winning bay filly closed the gap quickly and drew even with Seventh Street, ridden by Rajiv Maragh, inside the final furlong. Seatte Smooth was able to edge away in the last sixteenth under right-handed urging from Dominguez. Dutrow said ...

Summer Bird, ridden by Kent Desormeaux, won the Belmont Stakes, denying a unique personal Triple Crown bid by jockey Calvin Borel aboard Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird. Borel, trying to become the first jockey to win all three legs of the US racing's Triple Crown on two different horses, guided Mine That Bird from last to the lead heading into the sweeping final turn in the 1 1/2-mile race. But Summer Bird responded under Desormeaux, who captured his first victory in the Belmont - a race where he had twice seen hopes of Triple Crown glory dashed.

This was a Belmont for the Birds. It was Summer Bird, not Mine That Bird and jockey Calvin Borel, who came roaring down the long stretch and won the final jewel of the Triple Crown. (June 6)
A year ago jockey Kent Desormeaux lost a bid for a Triple Crown when he had to pull up heavy favorite Big Brown. On June 6 in the Belmont Stakes (gr. I), he got his elusive Belmont win when he guided Summer Bird to an upset win in the third leg of the Triple Crown. All eyes were on the other bird in the field, Mine That Bird, but he came up short, finishing third as Dunkirk got second. Both Summer Bird and Mine That Bird are sons of Birdstone , who won the Belmont in 2004. Some might criticize jockey Calvin Borel for moving too soon in the 12-furlong race, but Borel said following the race that though he might have done so, "we just got outrun today." Borel would have become the first jockey to win the three Triple Crown races on different horses. He won the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) on Mine That Bird and the BlackBerry Preakness Stakes (gr. I) on Rachel Alexandra. Dunkirk went to the lead out of the gate, followed by Charitable Man, Miners Escape and Mr. Hot Stuff. Both Summer Bird and Mine That Bird were in the back of the 10-horse field as they went a quarter in :23.41. John Velazquez still had Dunkirk on the lead while Miners Escape took second as they went the first half-mile in :47.13 and six furlongs in 1:12.43. Mine That Bird was in last, but only about seven lengths from the lead. Meanwhile, Desormeaux had the spot that Borel normally has, sitting on the rail as the field approached the turn for home and the lengthy stretch run at Belmont ...
