Join Sandesh Kadur as he travels across the North-east Himalayan landscape and documents the wildlife of the Eastern Himalaya. This is the first in a series of video chapters produced whilst still in the field photographing the region to produce a coffee-table book highlighting the importance of the Himalaya. These short films, shot mostly on Canon HD-SLR Cameras are another outcome that goes behind the scenes and highlights unique stories and difficulties encountered - a kinda behind the scenes look into 'getting the shot'. This short film was shot (almost) entirely on Canon HD-DSLR Type Cameras - the Canon 5DMark2 and the Canon 1DMark4, with a few short exceptions. It has recently been nominated for a Green Oscar at the Wildscreen Wildlife Film Festival in Bristol, UK.

A brief presentation by Tanvir Zahack; explaining about how Indians can contribute their efforts to help protect the tigers. What you can do to save the tiger? According to sources, India had an estimated 40000 tigers in the wild. In 2002, based on pug mark census, this number was 3642. As per the monitoring exercise by Wildlife Institute of India in association with National Tiger ConservationAuthority (NTCA), Government of India using camera traps, in 2008 we were left with only 1411 tigers. This number is so small that they will be gone soon if we dont wake up to the crisis. WWF-India aims for a strategic and focused approach in its tiger conservation efforts. Our goal is to restore, maintain and protect tigers as well as their habitat and prey base in important tiger landscapes in India. The objectives are to: · Protect, restore corridors to ensure connectivity between tiger habitats while ensuring that human-tiger conflicts are reduced. · Reduce pressures on the tiger habitats by promoting alternative livelihoods for local communities in and around tiger habitats. · Create incentives for local communities as well as state and regional government and opinion-makers to support tiger conservation. · Enhance capacities of the Forest Department to control poaching of tigers and prey species. · Provide policy inputs at state and central levels to ensure effective measures for conservation of tigers and their habitats. · Promote the political will as well as popular support ...
We were extremely lucky to have spotted this leopard in Nagzira on Feb 12, 2010, that too from our guest house. It was almost dusk when suddenly cheetal alarm calls were heard from a hillock on the other side of Nilay guest house in Nagzira. Our guide asked us to watch out. We could see the cheetals giving out sharp calls and stamping their hoofs on the ground in the manner typical when they sense danger. The calls continued for several minutes before this adult leopard made an appearance from behind the foliage on the hillock. It was extremely cautious, making several stops along the way to the water line. It must have been very thirsty as it had a long drink. It then climbed back some distance on the hillock, stepping up on a tree probably to sniff out the scent marking of other animals, went to another tree and marked its own scent. Hovered around for a few seconds before disappearing behind the thick foliage. It was around for about 15 minutes, easily our best sighting of a leopard ever. Please excuse the camera shake, as I was trying to take close ups from about 250 feet-- the breadth of water body that separated us from the leopard. Also, it was falling light and camera's depth of field was very small, hence it was finding it difficult to focus on the subject amidst trees. Also please excuse the excited whispers of our guide Baburao and some of us who were seeing a leopard in the wild for the first time. Nagzira is a small (152 sq km) but rich wildlife sanctuary in ...
www.ashokaholidays.com Our guest Mr. and Ms. Achim Walter shares their experience of the wild side of India with us, Ashoka Holidays. It was more of a Tiger tour as the couple visited the most famous territories of the royal feline Bandhavgarh, Kanha, Ranthambore and Corbet National Park.
These two lionesses along with four cubs were sighted on the afternoon of Dec 28, 2009. Two cubs were frolicking in undergrowth at a distance (not in video) while two were with their mother. They can be seen leaving to join their siblings. The lionesses remained seated near the artificial waterhole taking no notice of our vehicle. Amazingly, they were unconcerned about even some forest guards, on foot and having nothing more than a stick with them, trying to ensure that cubs do not stray too far. These are wild lionesses in Gir national park, not the captive ones of nearby Devadia safari park. Gir national park is at present the only home of Asiatic lions. It has about 360 of them by last official count. The Asiatic lion went almost extinct in early 20th century but has since been revived. It is a remarkable conservation success story. So much so that now Gir, which is about 1400 sq km, is falling short for them. An alternative sanctuary has been made ready for the Asiatic lions at Kuno Palpur in Madhya Pradesh. But Gujarat is refusing to part with some lions to populate that sanctuary since it does not want to lose its unique place as only home of the species. Translocating some lions to another place is must from conservation point of view specially since the present population is derived from just about a dozen individuals and is genetically similar. As interaction with humans and domestic animals grows around Gir, the risk of them contracting canine distemper or some ...

A magnificent specimen of Indian bison (Gaur) spotted in famed Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve in Chandrapur district of Vidarbha, central India, on the morning of Nov 29, 2009. Gaurs usually live in herds of up to 20 individuals though some males, like this one, also roam alone. Tadoba has several of these herds and they are easily spotted. Gaurs are related to cows, not to be confused with American bisons that are related to buffaloes.
The tiger we saw on Nov 28, 2009, afternoon while on an excursion from tigertrails lodge (tigertrails.in) into famed Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve in Chandrapur district of Vidarbha, central India. A rare sight. Only a few hundred tigers remain in the wild in India. The species needs all the protection it can get.

In search of wild elephant herds, 'www.indiavideo.org' video crew was exploring the forest areas of Muthanga and Tholpetty in the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, Kerala State, India. The daylong search finally met with success by evening, when the crew spotted one herd in the Tholpetty forest area. The crew quickly swung into action and mounted the camera on top of the van that they were traveling. As they began to shoot the elephant herd, a jeep came in from the opposite direction from where the crew was standing. The movement of the Mahindra Jeep provoked a he elephant in the herd and he made a dash towards the Mahindra Jeep. The charging elephant was stopped couple of metres from the jeep, as the driver switched on the lights along with continuous honking. This practice of switching on the lights and sounding the horn is usually done to scare elephants, but may not work always. The he elephant backed off into the forest and then made one hesitant move without success. Once the elephant was at a safe distance from the jeep, the driver moved the vehicle with great speed. But to the surprise of every one, the she elephant came back and gave one final charge at the jeep, which by that time sped away to safety.
