The new updated open of News 4 at 6 (I'm a little bit late, I know) When i saw this, I was disappointed with the open.......I was hoping they would use a different New York video and not use the same open they have for Today in New York. The only change they did to make it different, is darken the video which makes it look bad. Watch in HD.

Original aircheck of radio station WNBC in New York City. Recorded on Oct 4, 1987 This aircheck brings home everything this channel represents, which is that records during that time were made to sound their best in mono for broadcast on AM Top 40 radio. NOT in stereo, for pop music during that time was rare to hear on FM stereo radio. During the time frame from 1987 to Oct 7, 1988, WNBC had special shows during the weekends called "The Time Machine". This was a very accurate re-creation of how AM Radio sounded like during the late 60's to early 70's. This show has become legendary in radio circles! Sadly, Radio Station WNBC no longer exists. On Oct 7, 1988, it became WFAN and changed to a sports talk format. Yes, it is hard to believe that WNBC radio is no longer around. This aircheck also allows you to hear EXACTLY how it sounded like. Radio stations like WNBC & WABC used lots of audio "processing" to make the music sound it's best when heard on either a car radio's 6 X 9 inch dashboard speaker, or from an AM Transistor Radio's tiny 3-1/2 inch speaker. As a result, these AM radio stations added reverb and then highly "compressed" the audio, which made it sound even louder. You can hear that in this aircheck!Channel WABCRADIO77 is a proud supporter of the "Oldies Message Board" found at this link: www.oldiesboard.com If you like oldies music, then please check out the message board, for that is where many oldies fans are "hanging out" and posting lots of cool stuff about ...

This really IS the end of WNBC's analog broadcasts on channel 4 in New York. The station ceased regular analog programming on the channel on June 12, 2009 at 12:30PM. For the next 2 weeks, a loop of DTV instructional videos played, then on June 26 at 10:58 AM, it ended like this. This is the last 2 minutes, picking up with the end of the last cycle of the NAB's DTV video. What followed was some black, some bars, a variation of a 1970's WNBC-TV test pattern, a brief logo montage, then analog hash. Note that there's no audio with the bars, black or the TP. Other than the server which played back the videos, there were no devices in the nightlight equipment chain that could generate audio. This is the extended version, (the shorter, final 1-minute version is also available here) which shows in real time the transition from nightlight to GOODBYE.
As received over the air on 6/26/09, WNBC, New York signs off its analog transmitter on VHF channel 4. Regular programming had ended 2 weeks earlier, on June 12, but WNBC continued to operate as a "nightlight" station, with continuous showings of the NAB's DTV instructional videos. At 11 AM on June 26, the nightlight was turned off. This recording is the last minute of analog WNBC(TV), which included a slightly modified (the "-TV" was artistically deleted from the callsign) test pattern from the late 70s, followed by a montage of many of the logos used by NBC over the years. The music under the logo montage was used by NBC Nightly News in the early 80's.
