In 1903, with the help of teh US Navy, Panama won its independance from Colombia. In gratitude Panama gave the US ten mile wide zone in which to build a canal. It took ten years to build the canal and many people died in the making of it, but it finally opened in 1914. Ships from around the world soon began to use it. Latin America had become a crossroads of world trade. And the United States controlled the Toll Gate.
Francisco Madero believed in democracy and wanted to strengthen its hold in Mexico. He announced that he would run for president early in 1910, and Diaz had him arrested and exiled to the US. From the US Madero organized an armed revolution against Diaz. This started the Mexican Revolution. Many different leaders aroused from different parts of Mexico with their own armies.
The United States had developed substantial business holdings with Cuba. Doing so, the United States had great importance on Cuba's economy. Spain was still the lead power holder in Cuba though, soldiers would keep Cuban's in concentration camps in order to keep rule over the people. Americans despised the Spanish brutality so in 1898, the United States entered the Spanish American War. It was a four month war and the US not only attacked Spain in Cuba, but also in the Philippine Islands because it was unexpected there. Because the Spanish were unprepared for war on both sides, they were quickly defeated. Cuba was now seen as an independent nation, but in reality it was the US who controlled most of it.
Commodore Perry arrived in the Japan's Tokyo Harbor with four massive ships. The ships were large black wooden steam powered ships with cannons that scared the Japanese. The Tokugawa, out of fear, were forced to recieve and accept the letter from President Filmore.
Chinese addiction on Opium was causing major problems on the Chinese and Britains. A Qing Emperor's advisor wrote a letter to Britain explaining why their problems and asking them to stop trading Opium, but the letter remained unanswered and Britain continued to trade it. The result of this conflict started teh Opium War. I was mostly over seas and Biritain's steam powered ships easily deafeted the Chinese. The Chinese were forced to sign a treaty.
President Monroe issued the Monroe Doctrine in 1823. It was a document that said that the Americas , the Anerucab continent, was to not be future colonized by European powers. In other words The United States was telling European countries to stay away from The Americas. The United States did little to enforce the document, but it was clear to Europe to not enter for a couple of years.
