The MTA of New York City is following through on its promise to cut $40 million from their paratransit service. Everyone's nervous about what these changes will actually look like, so the folks at DISLABELEDtv walk you through the details spelled out in the MTA's own briefing on the matter. Be sure to read the Final Report for yourself at www.mta.info
www.mta.info We are still getting hammered with some of the worst service cuts. 12 routes are being completely eliminated. And OUTRAGOUSLY, there is NO ALTERNATIVE to many of the routes being cut, forcing people to walk or shell out $10 or more for cabs. Why is Nassau County always singled out for such draconian cuts? This all goes down in a month. The message is clear. If you live in Nassau County, its time to get a car! Its clear the MTA thinks Nassau County is worthless, unless you take the LIRR. Maybe its time we start sending the bills for cabs to Jay Walder and the Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano for letting LI Bus riders down.

MTA Long Island Rail Road customers can now get train schedules and specific travel plans sent to their cell phones as part of a pilot partnership with CooCoo, the Long Island-based text engine company that provides data via text message for standard text fees. A LIRR customer can use any cell phone to text a travel request - simply text CooCoo or 266266 (which spells CooCoo) and get an immediate response. Text-based CooCoo opens a whole new avenue of communication. A text message, such as "Penn to Huntington" sent to CooCoo or 266266 gets train schedules instantly. Since CooCoo's pilot partnership with the LIRR began on January 13, the firm has been handling hundreds of requests for LIRR train information every day, according to Tunney. For more information about CooCoo and its LIRR service go the MTA's home page, www.mta.info/coocoo
LIRR Going your Way Weve always been about moving the greatest number of people, using the least amount of energy. Of course when we started 250 horsepower meant 250 horses. Today we save Long Islanders more than 400 million gallons of gas and an estimated billion dollars every year while keeping tons of pollutants out of the air. Were doing a few other things, too. Our newest electric trains conserve energy, and new composite third rail is easier to handle and install and requires less voltage. At our repair shops, weve added more windows instead of more lamps. Our cleaning staff use environmentally friendly cleaning products, free of toxins and harmful chemicals. And we use recyclable office products. Better still, were bringing green transit to Long Island communities with projects like the Mineola Intermodal Center (mta.info the Jamaica/AirTrain hub (mta.info and the MacArthur Airport Package (mta.info that link rail, bus, airports and light rail systems in clean, comfortable and accessible environments. Its all about making Long Island a better place to live and work.

So this evenings blog will be in regards to cuts in services and rate hike the MTA (Metropolitan Tranist Authority) are planning. The buses and trains here in Nassau County don't run enough, and they want to cut it more. If this is NOT an insult to the working class and the enviroment then I don't know what is... You'll notice how short this video is. That's because there's only a handful of cuts planned for Metro-North. How come they get off so easy? I have a hunch it has to do with the fact the wealthiest suburbanites live up in Westchester and southern Connecticut. How can the MTA get away with such classism? The PDF link: www.mta.info HEARING SCHEDULE: www.mta.info The cuts: Increase train occupancy for East of Hudson electric peak services, reducing train lengths wherever possible up to the current loading standard of 95% of available seats. Hudson Line: Three weekday evening off-peak trains (9:04 PM, 9:55 PM, and 10:55 PM trains to Croton-Harmon) combined with other trains. Harlem Line: Two weekday PM peak trains (7:52 PM to Southeast and 7:57 PM to Mount Kisco) combined, and one weekday evening (off-peak) train (10:29 to Southeast) eliminated. New Haven Line: Two weekday mid-afternoon off-peak trains (1:34 PM express to New Haven and 2:33 PM express from New Haven), and 1 late night train 7 days per week (1:15 AM to Stamford) are eliminated Port Jervis Line: One weekday late-morning off-peak train and one PM Peak train are eliminated. The 9:20 AM off-peak train from Port Jervis to Hoboken eliminated and the 11:31 AM from Port Jervis to Hoboken operates earlier. And the 6:27 PM Peak train from Hoboken to Port Jervis is eliminated and the 7:02 PM and 7:57 PM departures from Hoboken are adjusted slightly earlier to reduce the resulting headways in the late-PM peak. In a city so dependent on public transportation, it is almost incomprehensible to cut service on the MTA system. But most of these cuts will happen, because no one is offering any help or alternative ideas. These cuts will strand overnight riders of bus routes, and will lead to dangerously overcrowded subways on weekends and middays. They plan on cutting service on the 7!! One of the busiest lines! The MTA wants to balance the budget on our backs, instead of cutting their executive board salaries, or raising bridge tolls. I knew this would happen without Congestion Pricing, and you can thank one man for that, by the name of Sheldon Silver, a true enemy of the people! For a complete list of cuts, go to the PDF's below. mta.info www.mta.info HEARING SCHEDULE: www.mta.info The list is so long I cant even post it here, so read the PDF's and watch the video!
The LIRR's proposed service cuts are even worse than what was proposed last year. Gone will be train service east of Ronkonkoma, except on summer weekends. While ridership can be light on the Greenport line, certainly there is enough to at least warrant a shuttle bus. Hampton Jitney IS NOT a substitute because it is MORE EXPENSIVE and DOESN'T CARRY WITHIN LONG ISLAND. That means that anyone needing to get to places like Riverhead, Matituck, and Greenport from anywhere that IS NOT Manhattan will be left stranded. The other cut that will prove to be a huge mess will be reducing off-peak service from half hourly to hourly on the Port Washington line. Years ago it used to run only hourly, and crowding became a huge problem. Now it will be again, and anyone getting on after Great Neck will most likely have to stand. There's many other cuts in service as well. Compared to Metro-North (which I will get into in another video) LIRR is getting hit hard. Here's a complete list of the cuts, preceded by a link to the MTA LIRR cuts PDF. www.mta.info HEARING SCHEDULE LINK: www.mta.info Babylon Branch: Combine 6 peak trains into 3 peak trains Belmont: no service except for the Belmont Stakes Greenport Branch: eliminate all service Hempstead and Ronkonkoma Branches: Reduce length of 2 trains by 2 cars each Long Beach Branch: Cancel 2 peak trains Montauk Branch: Cancel 1 peak train from Hunterspoint Oyster Bay Branch: Cancel one roundtrip each day on weekends Port Jefferson Branch ...
While the N51 and the N80 were saved, there are even more stunning cuts on this list. Starting this summer, there will be NO BUS SERVICE to Jones Beach whatsoever. Both the N87 and N88, which are heavy ridership routes, will be discontinued! The N94 and N95, which I have seen quite busy (though not as much since the recession) will also be ended. Here's a link to the MTA's Long Island Bus Cuts PDF. www.mta.info PUBLIC HEARING LINK: www.mta.info At least they try to explain the cuts, but the only one I see fit is getting rid of the N93. Other changes could be made, which I will touch on in another video. But these cuts leave too many people stranded! Here's the complete list of cuts for Long Island Bus. • N2- Discontinue the weekday peak period extension to Jamaica due to low ridership, and the availability of alternatives. • N53- Discontinue all service due to low ridership. • N65- Discontinue all service on this specialized school route due to availability of alternative service. • N66- Discontinue all service on this specialized school route due to availability of alternative service. • N67- Discontinue all service on this specialized school route due to availability of alternative service. • N87- Discontinue all service on this specialized seasonal (summer) route. • N93- Discontinue all service due to low ridership. • N3- Discontinue all service due to low ridership and availability of alternatives. • N14- Discontinue midday service due to low ridership (peak period ...
One of Long Island Rail Road train conductor Larry Pinkham, Jr.s duties is to walk through his train after all customers leave at the final stop, checking for items passengers may have left behind. He did just that on Tuesday (January 12) when the 2:52 PM train from Penn Station completed its run at Huntington (at 3:59 PM), Pinkham was checking the train when he came across what he described as a wallet that was large and bulky right near the window seat of one of the cars. The wallet turned out to contain $2830 in cash and, luckily, identification of its owner. As per railroad procedure, Conductor Pinkham, a 10-year LIRR veteran, turned in the wallet and its contents to LIRR managers at the railroads Lost and Found Office in Penn Station. The cash was tagged and deposited for safe keeping and its owner, David Sperling, an attorney from Huntington, was contacted. Our Lost & Found operation depends on our employees who are responsible for turning in the items they find, said LIRR President Helena E. Williams. Were very proud of Conductor Pinkham, who did the right thing at the right time. His actions are in the highest tradition of LIRR customer service. Customers who lose an item are urged to file a report online by going to www.mta.info and following the link to the LIRR site. The LIRR Lost and Found Office is located at Penn Station and is open 7:20 AM to 7:20 PM, Monday through Friday. The phone number is 212-643-5228.
The MTA's shortfall will once again punish the riders who are doing the right thing by taking mass transit. And Paratransit cuts will hurt those who have the least. The MTA and New York state doesn't even seem to have a concience with these cuts. And they can be avoided, but as usual, the rich snobs who burn the most gas and use our resources wont suffer. It's time to REVOLT. Its NOW or NEVER people! The list of cuts for NYC Transit can be found at www.mta.info Folks need to contact their elected officials NOW! www.state.ny.us assembly.state.ny.us www.nysenate.gov And the MTA www.mta.info
The situation with the MTA isn't all Albany's fault. The MTA has shown, over and over again, that it is clueless with budgeting. The MTA needs to be consolidated into 2 divisions. MTA Bus and MTA Railroad (which will also manage the subways). Right now MTA has all these divisions, and the only consolidation plan so far being worked on, is consoliding MTA NYC Transit Bus, MTA Bus, and LI Bus under MTA Bus. But the buses still have seperate names and routes arent being interlined between depots. Consolidating all these seperate departments will cut the huge amount of money wasted on management. The MTA needs to look at how NJ Transit is run, which is much more efficient than the MTA. Also the MTA Board should not be getting any salaries. Most of these people make loads of money in their private lines of work, so why are they getting also paid huge salaries by taxpayers? Please visit www.mta.info and voice your outrage that the budget is always balanced on the riders!
