Courtesy: United States Air Force, by Senior Airman Steve Bauer, 30th Space Wing Public Affairs 12/2/2010 - VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- After more than a year of extensive preparation, Vandenberg is ready to host the landing of the Air Force's X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle scheduled to occur here between Friday, Dec. 3, and Monday, Dec. 6. The X-37B is the latest and most advanced re-entry space vehicle capable of being launched into low Earth orbit altitudes and is able to endure extended periods of time performing space technology experimentation and testing. "This is a historical first, not only for Vandenberg Air Force Base, but for the Air Force and our nation to receive a recoverable spacecraft here and really take a step forward in advancing unmanned space flight," said Col. Richard Boltz, 30th Space Wing commander. On April 22, a United Launch Alliance-built Atlas V Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle carrying the X-37B was launched from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla. Prior to the X-37B's East Coast departure, the Air Force Rapid Capabilities Office, which is leading the Department of Defense's Orbital Test Vehicle initiative, needed the assurance before launching the vehicle that Vandenberg was prepared for the landing of the spacecraft. Following a request, preparation for landing became a high priority at Vandenberg, which required a cumulative effort of base personnel in order for approval of the X-37B landing here. In one instance, a team of about ...
The X-37B unmanned spacecraft, a secretive US military project, landed on December 3rd at a California airbase after a successful seven month flight. The US Air Force claimed the flight was a test flight, used to measure the effectiveness of the craft. However, all of its activities while in orbit were classified. Officials explained the mission objectives as; guidance, navigation, control, thermal, autonomous operation, re-entry and landing tests. Due to the vague nature of the flight description, some have come to believe the craft was designed for spying or other military purposes; possibly leading to the militarization of space. Robert Bowman, the former director for Advanced Space Programs Development at the US Air Force said, the program is secret so potential adversaries are not aware of the exact nature of the program. After seven months the X-37B space shuttle is back on Earth and its space mission is being kept very quiet. The United States Air Force planned to perform a series of tests but could this be the beginning of the US going above and beyond in space exploration or the beginning of the militarization of space?

3 Dec 2010 - VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- The US Air Force's first unmanned re-entry spacecraft landed at Vandenberg Air Force Base at 1:16 am The X-37B, named Orbital Test Vehicle 1 (OTV-1), conducted on-orbit experiments for more than 220 days during its maiden voyage. It fired its orbital maneuver engine in low-earth orbit to perform an autonomous reentry before landing. The X-37B is the newest and most advanced re-entry spacecraft. Managed by the Air Force Rapid Capabilities Office (AFRCO), the X-37B program performs risk reduction, experimentation and concept of operations development for reusable space vehicle technologies. "Today's landing culminates a successful mission based on close teamwork between the 30th Space Wing, Boeing and the Air Force Rapid Capabilities Office," said Lt Col Troy Giese, X-37B program manager from the AFRCO. "We are very pleased that the program completed all the on-orbit objectives for the first mission." OTV-1's de-orbit and landing mark the transition from the on-orbit demonstration phase to a refurbishment phase for the program. The Air Force is preparing to launch the next X-37B, OTV-2, in Spring 2011 aboard an Atlas V booster.

AMATEUR astronomers are enjoying keeping track of the US Militaries top secret space plane, the X-37B. Launching in April, the X-37B got a lot of attention, although not a lot of information was released about it's true purpose. Built by Boeing's Phantom Works division, the X-37B was actually originally headed by NASA. It is currently under the supervision of a secretive Air Force unit. Only a few in the US military know it's purpose, although observers on Earth think it's clearly the start of the "weaponisation of space". In May, the X-37B's behavior suggested it was testing sensors for new spy satellites. It can also be a simple Satellite Tracker. When the shuttle disappeared July 29th, conspiracy theories about its fate started. Amateur sky watcher Greg Roberts of Cape Town, South Africa, noticed it failed to appear above his base on August 14. He spotted it five days later. Greg Roberts noticed it was 30km higher and also on a different trajectory, according to associates in Oklahoma and Rome. The small change of orbit can be a test of the maneuvering system. The shuttle has been orbiting for 124 days. It uses Solar array when in space for power, this will allow it to be airborne for upwards of 270 days. Although the presence of a rocket motor and large fuel tanks allows it to change orbit, as onlookers noticed with it's latest change of course.
