The contractors, who work mainly for Western companies do everything from guarding supply convoys to personal security for diplomats and businessmen. A government spokesman says the companies will be ordered to disband within four months. All this comes as the US increases its military presence in Afghanistan. Ivan Eland, Director of the Center for Peace and Liberty at the Independent Institute believes Hamid Karzai is targeting unregistered local warlords more than security companies.

The CIA has hired Xe Services, the private security firm formerly known as Blackwater Worldwide, to guard its facilities in Afghanistan and elsewhere. The firm has been fighting off prosecution and lawsuits since an incident in 2007 in Baghdad, when its guards allegedly killed 17 unarmed civilians and wounded 24. Since then, the company has been accused of murder, distribution of controlled substances, tax evasion, child prostitution, weapons smuggling and defrauding the government.
At a June 29th Oversight and Government Reform subcommittee hearing, Rep. Peter Welch (D-Vt.) questioned officials as to why Xe Services, formerly known as Blackwater, continues to receive US government contracts despite a troubling history of serious violations in Iraq.

Iraqi officials have ordered 250 Blackwater security guards to leave the country within a week. The Interior Ministry says both current and former employees of the firm, were told of their expulsion a few days ago. It comes after a US judge dismissed the manslaughter charges against 5 members of the company, in connection with the killing of 17 Iraqi civilians in 2007. A 6.5 magnitude earthquake rocked the North Coast Co-ops in Eureka and Arcata on January 9, 2010 at around 4:30 pm Fortunately no one was hurt. The Eureka Co-op lost power and had to use back up generators to keep food frozen and chilled, and had product broken on the floors everywhere. The Arcata Co-op did not lose power and had minimal damage to product. Both stores closed for clean up and to allow employees to check in with family, pets and friends.
