South African authorities say they have halted a series of attacks on foreign nationals, preventing a recurrence of widespread xenophobic violence in May 2008 that claimed more than 60 lives and drove thousands from their homes. Police and soldiers have been deployed to potential flash-points. Millions of economic migrants, many from neighbouring Zimbabwe, live and work in South Africa, which has the continent's largest economy.
Security agencies are on high alert to ensure that xenophobic violence is quelled as quickly as possible, Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa said on Thursday.
