Online magazine InformationWeek reported Tuesday that Xerox (NYSE:XRX) has filed a patent-infringement lawsuit against Yahoo! (NASDAQ:YHOO), Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) and Google's YouTube video site over disputed Internet search and e-commerce technology. Xerox alleges that Google's AdWords and AdSense software infringe on its patent "System for automatically generating queries." In addition, Xerox claims Google Maps and Google video violate a different patent regarding the updating of Web pages based on user reviews. Yahoo is alleged to have infringed on the company's query patent with Yahoo Search Marketing, Yahoo Publisher Network and Y!Q Contextual Search. Google's senior litigation counsel, in an email to InformationWeek, said: "These claims are entirely without merit, and we'll vigorously defend ourselves against them." Yahoo didn't immediately respond to the magazine's requests for comment.
[Recorded: June 4, 2001] Founded in 1970, the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) created, over a relatively short period, a paradigm shift in computing. Many of the technologies in modern personal computers, including high-quality graphical user interfaces featuring windows and icons, computer generated bitmapped graphics, Ethernet networked distributed computing, and laser printing, were mature technologies at PARC by the end of the 1970s. The platform on which many of these technologies were utilized was the Xerox Alto personal computer, developed at PARC in 1973. Although small and slow by today's standards, the Alto's flexibility made it an ideal system for hardware and software experimentation. In this talk, Alto designers Chuck Thacker and Butler Lampson describe a few of the applications and technologies the Alto enabled, as well as the exceptional working environment at PARC and the extraordinarily talented group of people who made it all happen.
John Seely Brown was chief scientist of Xerox Corporation and director of its Palo Alto Research Center for almost 20 years. His lecture answers two central questions: What made PARC so creative? Did Xerox really fumble the future to Apple? John Seely Brown is currently a USC visiting scholar and the independent co-chairman of the Deloitte Center for the Edge. His personal research interests include the management of radical innovation, digital youth culture, digital media, and new forms of communication and learning. Part scientist, part artist and part strategist, JSBs views are unique and distinguished by a broad view of the human contexts in which technologies operate and a healthy skepticism about whether or not change always represents genuine progress. www.johnseelybrown.com

This is a demostration of the Xerox Alto computer in 1974. The Alto, introduced in 1973, but never commercially produced, was perhaps the most innovative design in computer history: it had a mouse, a GUI, an object-oriented OS and development tools, and fast networking with the first ethernet cards. These are features that wouldn't be common until 10 years later, and even 20 years later some of them were still cutting edge.
