Mike Scioscia Press Conference Alex Rodriguez, welcome to the World Series. The New York Yankees are back in baseball's big event. The sport's top spenders finally cashed in with their first pennant in six years Sunday night, beating the Los Angeles Angels 5-2 in Game 6 of the AL championship series behind the savvy pitching of Andy Pettitte. Next up, New York hosts defending champion Philadelphia in the World Series opener Wednesday night. Cliff Lee is expected to face Yankees ace CC Sabathia in an enticing pitching matchup between former Cleveland teammates -- and the past two AL Cy Young Award winners. Ridiculed in the past for his October flops, Rodriguez played a huge role in helping his team advance through the playoffs, batting .438 with five homers and 12 rbis. (© 2009 The Associated Press. 10/22/09 ANGELS JERED WEAVER, not normally a RELIEVER this year, GETS a BIG STRIKEOUT v YANKEES DEREK JETER, 8th inning, ALCS GAME 5 as ANGELS COACH MIKE SCIOSCIA must have REALIZED its WIN or GO HOME TIME (in this case STAY HOME). ANGELS had a 4-0 lead THRU 6 INNINGS then gave up 6 runs in the 7th inning with a series of pitching changes (Scioscia pulled Lackey with 2 outs in the 7th inning, despite no runs having been scored yet. Lackey left to a standing ovation and bases loaded, having just given up a DOUBLE & two walks, but PROBABLY could have gotten one more out or at least less damage than the 6 runs that followed). MIRACULOUSLY, it seemed, ANGELS CAME RIGHT BACK in the bottom of the 7th to score three runs and take the lead 7-6. AT this point SCIOSCIA must have been THANKING HIS LUCKY STARS (with all due respect to SCIOSCIA who has done fairly well with the ANGELS but sometimes could be OR should be a little more "VISIBLE"--ie argue a few more close calls just for emotional sake if nothing else ) & KNEW VERY WELL that it was time for a BIG GUN to pitch the 8th. I thought WEAVER should have pitched the 9th as well, but instead FUENTES came in and BARELY, JUST BARELY, SQUEAKED OUT A WIN for the ANGELS--IN CLASSIC ANGEL STYLE, barely winning. video 2009 10 22 19 55 39
10/22/09 ANGELS LACKEY COMES OUT of ALCS GAME #5 v YANKEES but WHY ?! SURE, he had a little trouble--a double & 2 walks but the score was still 4-0 and he just got a pop out so it was 2 outs bases loaded. lackey's a BIG GUN and should have stayed in, given the situation but SCIOSCIA thought it would be better to force TEIXEIRA to bat to his weak side (as a switch hitter) so he brought in OLIVER. It DIDN'T WORK and ANGELS ALMOST LOST the GAME in ONE INNING--by the time it ended it was 6-4, YANKEES AHEAD; but the ANGELS weren't finished & the BOTTOM of the 7th WOULD PROVE TO BE MORE IMPORTANT than the TOP of the 7th. video 2009 10 22 19 10 08
10/22/09 ANGELS BOBBY ABREU DOUBLES, HUNTER SINGLES, ANGELS LEAD 2-0 v YANKEES, ALCS #5 as the ANGELS POWER their way to a 4-0 lead in the 1st inning to give themselves & the FANS some optimism & inspiration after losing game 4. Let's HOPE that this optimism & inspiration can CARRY THEM thru GAME 6 & 7 back in New York, as the ANGELS PLAN to RALLY THEIR WAY to the WORLD SERIES, without the MONKEY in NEW YORK. IF ANYBODY CAN DO IT, the ANGELS CAN DO IT ! DO it for the SINGING COWBOY (GENE AUTRY) ! DO it for NICK ! (NICK ADENHART was the ANGELS rookie pitcher killed by a drunk driver at the beginning of the season after pitching his first BIG LEAGUE GAME ) video 2009 10 22 17 12 29
Here is my complete report for CNN on The Dodgers Game Two Win in LA. See you next year - Go Angels - Can They pull off the Miracle Win on Broadway?
Just when all looked lost, the Los Angeles Angels took a cue from an old friend. With their Rally Monkey doing his best work in years, the Angels sent the AL championship series back to New York. Kendry Morales drove in the go-ahead run with a two-out single in the seventh inning, and the Angels responded to the Yankees' six-run comeback moments earlier for a 7-6 win Thursday night that trimmed New York's lead in the ALCS to 3-2. Vladimir Guerrero's single tied it in the seventh for the Angels, who somehow didn't surrender after blowing a 4-0 lead moments earlier. New York struck immediately after manager Mike Scioscia removed ace John Lackey, with Robinson Cano capping the rally with a two-run triple. The Game 5 theatrics continued right up to the final pitch, when Angels closer Brian Fuentes retired Nick Swisher on a full-count popup with the bases loaded. "Everybody thought we were down," Angels outfielder Torii Hunter said. Game 6 is Saturday night at Yankee Stadium, with Andy Pettitte facing Los Angeles' Joe Saunders. Also in the forecast: a huge rainstorm. When Cano put New York up 6-4, everything in somber Angel Stadium pointed to a clinching victory and a 40th AL pennant for the Yankees. Instead, the Angels showed off the knack for late-game comebacks they've possessed ever since their run to their only championship in 2002, when the beloved Rally Monkey began appearing in the late innings on their scoreboard and in plush form in the stands. Although two games in ...
