A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Oamaru, New Zealand by TravelPod blogger Andreat titled "Oamaru and Yellow Eyed Penguins" Andreat's travel blog entry: "The drive from Christchurch to Dunedin looked long for one day, so we search for a nice stopover point and stumbled upon Oamaru, known for its penguins. Our backpackers accommodation had the nice name Chillawhile, and it was a nice place to have stayed more than one day. After we checked in, we rushed to the beach to see if we could get lucky watching yellow eyed penguins coming in to the beach for the night to roost. It was a nice walk down from the parking lot to the cliffs above the beach. There was a hideyhole full of the experts with their binoculars. We only were armed with our cameras. There were some fur seals at the far end of the beach to entertain us in the meantime. Finally, a penguin was spotted tottering on the beach from the water. But he seemed to be a sick one as his progress up the beach was so slow and he never did make it to the bushes the entire time we were there. I finally decided he was the decoy penguin to distract people from the others. We waited about an hour for others to appear. Finally this girl came running over to her boyfriend (funny as we were supposed to be quiet)... she said in German to him to come quick, there is one there that no one else has spotted. So I grabbed Jackie and we followed them. There was a penguin very close to the track that had climbed up the ...

The unspoilt Otago Peninsular near Dunedin on the South Island of New Zealand has many walk trails and opportunities to see fantastic wildlife. The endangered yellow-eyed penguins nest in several locations on the peninsular - normally in burrows behind the dunes amongst cabbage trees, tussock grass and flax. They can be seen crossing beaches to and from the ocean at dusk and dawn although when nesting will return their nests and burrows earlier in the afternoon.
Poor Gash hates having to stay inside each night.
These were yellow eyed penguins (very rare) that live in the Catlins in NZ. They live on a beach which has 170 million year old petrified forest clearly visible.

resortinterviews.com About a half hour drive from Dunedin is New Zealands Yellow-eyed Penguin Conservation Reserve. Mr Howard McGrouther established the reserve in 1985. He now provides guided tours through a series of covered trenches and observation huts where the penguins can be observed emerging from the sea and resting in their native habitat. This conservation project is a multi-Award Winner and is entirely financed through these guided tours.

Yellow-eyed penguins, some of the rarest penguin species in the world. Filmed on Tairoa Head on the Otago Peninsula just off of Dunedin, New Zealand. There are 2 good penguin encounters in this video, which yield a lot of squawking and excitement. Mom is coming up off the beach to feed her two young penguins, and first there is an "intruder"... Later on there is a small argument between the two offspring, as mom feeds the second-born before the first-born (against the 'rule' and pecking order).

Yellow-eyed penguins are the most endangered penguin species on earth. They can only be seen on the coast of New Zealand. This short documentation shows them in their natural environment, filmed on the Otago Peninsula at the Penguin Place, an important reserve. I am sorry this video does not include any sound. The only way to have sound on the blue screens is by including music, and since this is the very first video I've ever made, I did not want to make a big mess with copyright inquiries.

New Zealand Yellow Eyed Penguins. "To provide safe habitat and hospital care for sick and injured penguins" The Katiki Pt. Penguin Trust was formed in 2000 by Janice Jones and Walter Keiner to support Janices work in building penguin habitat and providing hospital for sick and injured penguins. What are we currently doing? Under the leadership of Rosalie Goldsworthy, a team of dedicated volunteers maintain two reserves which are home to two penguin colonies. They are called Barracoutta Bay and Katiki Pt. In 2006, there were 18 Yellow Eyed Penguin Nests at Barracoutta Bay and 24 Nests at Katiki Pt. These two reserves are also home to; Sooty Shearwaters, Little Blue Penguins and White Fronted Storm Petrels.
