The Yellowstone Caldera is the volcanic caldera located in Yellowstone National Park in the United States, sometimes referred to as the Yellowstone Supervolcano. The caldera is located in the northwest corner of Wyoming, in which the vast majority of the park is contained. The major features of the caldera measure about 34 miles (55 km) by 45 miles (72 km). Last eruption 70000 years ago (magmatic) / 1350 BC ± 200 years (explosive hydrothermal) ongoing (nonexplosive hydrothermal). Yellowstone, lies over a hotspot where light, hot, molten mantle rock rises towards the surface. While the Yellowstone hotspot is now under the Yellowstone Plateau, it previously helped create the eastern Snake River Plain (to the west of Yellowstone) through a series of huge volcanic eruptions. Although the hotspot's apparent motion is to the east-northeast, the North American Plate is really moving west-southwest over the stationary hotspot in the Earth's mantle. Over the past 17 million years or so, this hotspot has generated a succession of violent eruptions and less violent floods of basaltic lava. Together these eruptions have helped create the eastern part of the Snake River Plain from a once-mountainous region. At least a dozen of these eruptions were so massive that they are classified as supereruptions. Volcanic eruptions sometimes empty their stores of magma so swiftly that they cause the overlying land to collapse into the emptied magma chamber, forming a geographic depression called ...
Yellowstone Caldera Activity
Copyright @ www.pounehphotography.com Yellowstone National Park, established by the US Congress and signed into law by President Ulysses S. Grant on March 1, 1872,[3][4] is a national park located primarily in the US state of Wyoming, although it also extends into Montana and Idaho. Yellowstone was the first national park in the world, and is known for its wildlife and its many geothermal features, especially Old Faithful Geyser, one of the most popular features in the park.[5] It has many types of ecosystems, but the subalpine forest is dominant. Native Americans have lived in the Yellowstone region for at least 11000 years.[6] The region was bypassed during the Lewis and Clark Expedition in the early 19th century. Aside from visits by mountain men during the early-to-mid-19th century, organized exploration did not begin until the late 1860s. The US Army was commissioned to oversee the park just after its establishment. In 1917, administration of the park was transferred to the National Park Service, which had been created the previous year. Hundreds of structures have been built and are protected for their architectural and historical significance, and researchers have examined more than 1000 archaeological sites. Yellowstone National Park spans an area of 3468.4 square miles (8983 km2),[1] comprising lakes, canyons, rivers and mountain ranges.[5] Yellowstone Lake is one of the largest high-altitude lakes in North America and is centered over the Yellowstone Caldera ...
It felt strange walking around the Yellowstone Caldera, thinking that molten magma is not that far below the surface and that an eruption will happen again, maybe not in my life time but it will happen... The loosely defined term 'supervolcano' has been used to describe volcanic fields that produce exceptionally large volcanic eruptions. Thus defined, the Yellowstone Supervolcano is the volcanic field which produced the latest three supereruptions from the Yellowstone hotspot. The three super eruptions occurred 2.1 million, 1.3 million, and 640000 years ago, forming the Island Park Caldera, the Henry's Fork Caldera, and Yellowstone calderas, respectively. Within the past 17 million years, 142 or more caldera-forming eruptions have occurred from the Yellowstone hotspot. wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellowstone_Caldera music by Keyn project 02 - Lora, 06 - dead jay station and 16 - zanzibar

Size of the Yellowstone supervolcano caldera.
Under Yellowstone, America's first national park, lies the Yellowstone Caldera, a giant hot spot for volcanic activity. What scientists call a supervolcano. Now after hundreds of thousands of years lying dormant it threatens to erupt. This eruption could wipe out much of the United States killing millions. Suddenly, without warning, a small part of the caldera bursts. Temperatures plummet and the sky fills with dirty, black clouds of volcanic ash and destructive lightning. Lava erupts from the earth, boils over the crater rims, and rushes across the country side at speeds over 100 miles per hour vaporizing forests, animals, and tourists. As the rest of the caldera puffs and steams and threatens to explode, it's up to Yellowstone's top scientist and an adrenaline junkie Park Ranger to halt the erupting caldera. They must plug the lava, as well as stop the poisonous volcano clouds from spreading before the sky turns black and the entire world is frozen in a permanent, apocalyptic volcano winter.

CNN 01-27-2011 - Michio Kaku seems to be the resident expert on Yellowstone's sleeping giant known as the Yellowstone Caldera, or Super Volcano. Michio Kaku says 'all you can do is run' regarding the way to survive a super-eruption from this supervolcano. This is not the classic naysayers vs. doomsdayers story based on scripture or writings. This is coming straight from the scientists. Underneath Yellowstone National Park lies a super volcano with a magma chamber of approximately 25000km of magma. What is not known, is how much of it is eruptable magma. The ground has been swelling in the northwest corner of Wyoming at Yellowstone National Park. In January 2011, scientists have reported that the grounds have raised as high as ten inches in some areas of Yellowstone. Namely, The Yellowstone Caldera, or the Yellowstone Super Volcano, which is an underground magma chamber that measures about 34 miles (55 km) by 45 miles (72 km), or 1530 square miles, and has been wakening from a long sleep. There has been activity at Yellowstone in the past, and there is activity right now. Scientists say the supervolcano erupts every 600000 years, and we are currently overdue at the 640000 year mark at the time of this writing. The problem is, scientists have no idea when it will happen, as no human being has experience with a super volcano. It could blow tomorrow, in a week, a hundred years, or a hundred thousand years. Currently, we have no way of knowing when, but we do know that it will ...
earthquake.usgs.gov Part of what makes Yellowstone National Park so special is the supervolcano upon which it sits. Also known as the Yellowstone Caldera, the supervolcano's major features measure about 25 by 37 miles. And so when something of that magnitude stops and takes a breath, the entire park feels it. A substantial area of the park's grounds have now dramatically risen due to the volcano's activity over the last few years. Starting in 2004, scientists began to notice the ground over the caldera rising--at around 2.8 inches per year. Although this rate slowed in the last 3 years, the total increase since the beginning of the swelling is now at around 10 inches in some places. The caldera is an ancient crater. Each time it has erupted, the eruptions have been a thousand times more powerful than the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens. Its last major blow-up was about 640000 years ago, but about 30 smaller blasts have filled the caldera with lava and ash since then. The most recent of those smaller blasts was around 70000 years ago. But there's no need to worry. Even though scientists were initially concerned that this commotion was pointing toward a soon-to-come eruption, that's no longer a concern. Read more about the situation with the Yellowstone Caldera on National Geographic.
