Yma Sumac (pronounced /ˈiːmə ˈsuːmæk/; September 13, 1922 -- November 1, 2008) was a noted Peruvian soprano. In the 1950s, she was one of the most famous proponents of exotica music and became an international success, based on the merits of her extreme vocal range, which was said to be "well over four octaves" and was sometimes claimed to span even five octaves at her peak. Yma Sumac recorded an extraordinarily wide vocal range of more than four octaves from B2 to C#7 (approximately 123 to 2270 Hz). She was able to sing notes in the low baritone register as well as notes above the range of an ordinary soprano. Both low and high extremes can be heard in the song Chuncho (The Forest Creatures) (1953). She was also apparently able to sing in an eerie "double voice". www

this is a very popular nice song (in our city too)... not so simple to perform :) I like it :))))
Yma Sumac! Peru can be proud of this amazing singer. What a voice! What a woman. - But please don't ask me who the belly dancer is. I like her, too, but I don't know her name.

With her five octave range listen to how incredibly HIGH the diva Yma Sumac sings this last note INCREDIBLE!!! This is from the all-star production of Stephen Sondheim's Follies in 1990 starring Juliet Prowse, Shani Wallis, Susan Johnson, Karen Morrow, Dorothy Lamour, Yma Sumac, Jackie Joseph, Denise Darcel, and others. This was the West Coast premier of the broadway musical, directed by Fran Soeder.
Yma Sumac's last recording. For what I know, "Mambo Confusion" was released as a single in 1991 in a very limited edition and only in Germany. It is a mix (or remix) version of her Gopher Mambo, Chicken Talk, and a few other of Yma's songs (I would say Chuncho - The Forest Creatures is also present between 3:20 - 3:30). Yma, however, recorded some new vocals especifically for this song.
Yma Sumac is indeed a of her own. There is just no-one like her. Well, the same could be said about Brigitte Bardot but we all know that anyway, whereas Yma remains something of a hidden treasure. If you fancy rafting down the Amazonas while suffering from some kind of exotic desease, but you haven't got the money to do it in real life, just mix yourself a Zombie Royal, put on Yma Sumac, dim the lights and lie down on the floor and you are really their. Yes, only Yma has that magic power cause she is the last princess of the Incas. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053428/ http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0049063/

READ THIS. I hesitated to put this on Youtube. I talked this over with mrs. Sumac's personal assistent. As you can see he commented on one of the clips. In no way i want to make fun of mrs. Sumac. But it is a curiousity and it shows her 20.000 years old temper..... And if she is shown no respect, she is absolutely right.

You have to watch the 5 videos to notice the different voices she had, from the lower (the first videos) to the higher (the last videos) notes she could perform. "A voice as powerfull as earthquakes and as soft as bird songs" "Una voz tan potente como temblores y tan suave como musica de aves"

Live from Bucharest 1961
This song is amazing because "in my personal opinion" it`s the closest to the opera that i`ve ever heard from Yma Sumac, although i know Sumac sang in many occasions arias and songs from opera but i couldn`t find any unluckily. The second part of this video is the live version from the concert Ima gave in Moscow in 1961. I added some pictures of Peru because Yma always sang by and for her beloved country.

Known for her astonishing 4 1/2 octave vocal range, Yma Sumac (AKA Ima or Imma Sumack) is from Ichocán, Peru, a town high in the Andes. From an early age she performed in radio and movies and made recordings throughout South America. She came to the United States in the 1940s and performed with a small group of musicians and dancers. When she signed with Capitol Records in 1950 her stage name's spelling was changed to the more exotic "Yma Sumac." An urban legend that she is really "Amy Camus," a nice Jewish girl from Brooklyn, originated in 1951 with a joke among musicians repeated in one of Walter Winchell's gossip columns. She has acted in several films and stage shows, and continued to perform into the 1990s. She lives in Los Angeles and has been contemplating new releases of recordings of her most recent concerts.
