This song was performed and filmed LIVE on a backpacking trip in 2007. Steve and Wendell hiked down the trail to North Dome and made camp, collected some firewood, lit the fire, set up their camp chairs and played this tune "Fire Circle". The guitars are as follows: 1. Steve's "Trail Axe 3" - an all-redwood six string with a shortened scale for easier backpacking, designed and built by Steve. The neck on Trail Axe 3 was from a redwood fence post that was found on Drury Road. It was standing partially burned, yet had survived the 1991 Oakland Hills firestorm until Steve came along and yanked it out. 2. Wendel plays the "Trail Bajo" - a four string acoustic bass guitar with a standard Fender Scale, with a minimal peghead for low weight and less length for the narrow places on the trail. The Trail Bajo was also designed and built by Steve. This bass features a mahogany neck, back and sides and a spruce top.

Even though I am native to California, I had never heard of the Yosemite Fire Fall. I found out about it while watching a California Gold episode featuring Huell Howser taking a backpacking trip up to the top of Yosemite's Half Dome. Yep, right up to the very top. At the end of the episode he mentioned that this California Gold episode was part of the "Yosemite Week" DVD. He wants us to buy it of course (see info at end of video) and as part of his sales pitch, he mentioned that the DVD included a bonus feature that would tell us all about the World Famous Yosemite Fire Fall. And so, when I received my "Yosemite Week with Huell Howser" DVD in the mail, and watched this bonus episode, that was the first time I actually saw what it was all about, and learned a great deal about its history, and about the whole program surrounding it. If I heard him right, I think this was a nightly tradition in Yosemite Valley (during the summer season) for nearly 100 years. It was discontinued in 1968 because the valley was being overly mobbed by great crowds gathering to watch it. This is a clip from the DVD that gives a bit of the program history, and a rendition of the music that was performed during the firefall itself. The firefall and the music, they are the main attractions. And you would not be surprised that it was all about love, and that this is what drew the crowd.
