I'm here with another YouTube Gospel video. As a fan of old school gospel, I had to take us back to the year 1990. The Rev. Charles H. Nicks, Jr., born on 1941 in Lincoln, Nebraska, was a trailblazer in gospel music. If Twinkie Clark is the "Queen of Hammond B3", then Rev. Nicks would arguably be the "King of the Hammond B3". In 1957, he became the organist for the St. James Baptist Church Young Adult Choir, where he would later serve as the church's pastor. In addition to serving the St. James Baptist Church, he is recognized as a charter member and the 1st vice-president of the Gospel Music Workshop of America, or GMWA, which was founded under the "King of Gospel" Rev. James Cleveland. Also, he was a founding member of the Baptist Assembly of Free Spirit Churches, which was the foundation of what we know today as one of America's largest Black denominations, the Full Gospel Baptist Church, currently under the leadership of Presiding Bishop, Paul S. Morton, Sr. With the Holy Spirit guiding him, the membership of St. James increased to more than 2000. This multi-talented man did everything from play the Hammond, to direct a 1000 (I promise you I didn't make this up) member choir, to writing songs that we still hear today (Search Me Lord, which was revamped by Ricky Dillard, is one of them.) Even as a boy, he cared for the needs of others more than his own. He was reared by his great-grandmother, the late Mrs. Pearl Grant. As "Mama Pearl" grew older and less able to care for herself, young Jerry would spend time with her and see to it that her needs were met. Although best known for his gift of preaching, his ministry began in the area of music. He started playing the piano at the age of eight and quickly distinguished himself as a talented musician. Young Jerry accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior at the age of 12 and during his teens, he served as Minister of Music at his home church, the West End Baptist Church in Blytheville, Arkansas. As a young man, Jerry Black was extremely dedicated to the music ministry, but he soon knew there was a calling upon his life and that he could not substitute this call to preach with the music ministry. So, at the age of 21, Reverend Black accepted his calling to preach the Gospel. He was called and served as pastor of the Greater Paradise Baptist Church in Little Rock, Arkansas. During his 15 years of service to Greater Paradise, the church membership grew from 17 members to over 3000. Go back with me for a moment in the late 1960's on Sunday evening when the sanctuary lights were dimmed and the spotlight shone bright on the Hammond organ where Bro Donald is seated at the console of that great Hammond C3 Organ and the choir marches in from back of the auditorium and down the balconies on each side. The organ is played skillfully and the choir sings with such anointing you can feel the presence of the Holy Spirit.
World Premiere of the Single, Shout! Excelsior Children's Choir started in November of 2002 under the Direction of Mrs. Debbie Wallace. The choir is made up of children who range in age from five years old to twentysomething years old and attend Excelsior Junior Academy and Northeastern Academy: Brooklyn Campus in Brooklyn, New York. They have such a unique sound and a wonderful ministry! They have been blessed to sing at many churches in and around the Metropolitan areas of New York City. They are the winners of the McDonalds Gospelfest 2005, 2006 and 2007. Excelsior Children's Choir has also won the Black Caucus Music Festival of 2002 and 2007 taking top wins in various categories.They have been seen ministering their original songs from the PSAL Basketball Championship at Madison Square Garden to the steps of the White house in Washington DC. The Biography of Marlon C. Blair--- Marlon Clifford Blair was born in Detroit, Michigan, December 3, 1971. One of nine children, Marlon found ways to keep himself busy. He developed a love of music at an early age. As a young man in 1992 he wrote, composed and produced Its About That Time, a song that inspired the Urban African American community to stop the black on black crime. The song received radio airplay in the city of Detroit. His growing passion for music would later take him to Sacramento, CA in 1996. He began networking with other potential artists and sought to make connections that would catapult his career. He was unaware of how his life was going to change. While attending a church service he was approached by the pastor and was asked if he would be interested in television production. The pastor of that church saw a gift in him and offered to send Marlon to a class on basic camera operation at Access Sacramento Broadcasting. As an ambitious camera operator, in 1996 he produced his first televised program Gems From Heaven, which was well received in the greater Sacramento area. The Choir that we have chosen to honor in this feature is the official choral body of the beloved "Sinagoga" located in Harlem, New York. Ancient Sinagua and or Anasazi Indians used this area to travel from the higher mountainous regions (today's Flagstaff area) to the more open and fertile Verde Valley. These ancient travelers left interesting petroglyph images along the cliff walls in various locations. Montezuma's Well is a sinkhole, a collapsed underground limestone cavern filled with water. More than a million gallons of water a day flow continuously, providing a lush, verdant oasis in the midst of surrounding desert grassland. Montezuma's Well is 368 feet across and 55 feet deep; it sits at an elevation of 3618 feet. Native peoples started living in the region about 2000 years ago. The last known native peoples to inhabit the Montezuma Well area were the Western Apache. Two small caves at the well show signs of Apache occupation, sometime after 1800. http To get to Red Tank Draw, take 17 North to Hwy 618. Go right (east) on 618 Creek is on left can see it when you cross over the third bridge just before Southwestern Academy sign. To see the petroglyphs, continue crossing over the creek, and take the first right. The dirt road runs into the parking lot.
