In 1969 two young Australians Anthony Bourke and John Rendall visited Harrods in London and became enchanted with a young Lion cub, acting on impulse and with no previous Lion experience they immediately decided to buy him. They took possession of Christian some weeks later and moved him into their flat which had a basement under a shop, this was to become the lions home. Christian soon grew both in size and popularity and his boisterousness caused quite a stir in the antique shop he called home. But all good things must end and keeping a growing lion in the centre of London became untenable. Relief was at hand when George Adamson agreed to help Christian adapt to his new found home in Kenya and the relocation began. In 2008, a clip of the reunion with Christian was posted on youtube and became an internet sensation. Overnight people wanted to know more about what lay behind this clip. They had discovered him for sale in Harrods' exotic pets department and, concerned for his conditions and fate, decided to buy him. Rendall, Bourke and their girlfriends Jennifer Mary and Unity Jones cared for the lion until it was a year old. Christian's increasing size and the cost of looking after him led them to the realization that they could not keep him in London for much longer. The solution came when Bill Travers and Virginia mckenna, stars of the film Born Free, visited Rendall and Bourke's furniture shop, where Christian spent his days. They suggested that they ask the assistance of George Adamson, the Kenyan conservationist who, together with his wife Joy, was the subject of their movie. Adamson agreed to help them rehabilitate Christian into the wild at his compound at Kora National Reserve. Adamson slowly introduced Christian to an older lion 'Boy' and subsequently to a female cub Katiana in order to form the nucleus of a new pride. This is an interview with the original owners of Christian the Lion. They tell the story of another visit one year later, after the touching reunion we all fell so in love with.
Anthony Bourke and John Rendall meet up with Christian the lion for a second reunion in 1972. This meeting in Kenya with the now fully grown lion that they originally purchased as a cub from Harrods in 1969 and raised in their flat on London's King's Road, would also turn out to be the three friends' final farewell.
