Emilio Aguinaldo recognized the need for national symbols to rally the nation against the enemy. On June 5, 1898, he commissioned Julian Felipe, Cavite pianist and composer, to work on a march for the revolutionists. Named by Felipe as Marcha Filipino Magdalo the music was adopted on the spot and renamed Marcha National Filipina (Philippine National March). Pacquiao picks Zyrene to sing anthem abs-cbnNEWS.com Posted at 10/07/2010 12:37 AM | Updated as of 10/07/2010 10:51 AM MANILA, Philippines -- Filipino boxing superstar and Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao has chosen 24-year-old Zyrene Parsad to sing the Philippine anthem for his fight against Mexican boxer Antonio Margarito in Texas, USA on November 13. According to Parsad, Pacquiao personally chose her to sing "Lupang Hinirang" after he heard her perform in an Investor's night in Sarangani. With all the controversies surrounding the rendition of "Lupang Hinirang" during previous Pacquiao fights, Parsad vowed to sing the anthem correctly. The young singer said she is already preparing for the much awaited Pacquiao-Margarito bout. She said she tries to sing the national anthem every morning so she can be more familiar with its tempo and lyrics. She also jogs every day to improve her breathing. National Flag Law author Salvador Escudero III, meanwhile, said he will give Parsad references on the proper way to sing the national anthem. Parsad is set to meet with the National Historical Institute on Friday or Monday to give her tips on how to sing the anthem correctly. According to Section 37 of Republic Act (RA) 8491, the rendition of the national anthem, whether played or sung, shall be in accordance with the musical arrangement and composition of Julian Felipe. Section 20 of the law also states: "The rendition of the flag ceremony in official or civic gatherings shall be ...
This is the English translation of the current and official version of Lupang Hinirang (Chosen Land). These words are not to be sung as they do not fit in with the tune and are only included to provide a translation and nothing more. The Philippine National Anthem must always be sung in Filipino (Tagalog) and should be in accordance with the musical arrangement and composition of Julian Felipe. Lupang Hinirang (Chosen Land) - English Translation Beloved country, Pearl of the Orient, The heart's fervor, In your bosom is ever alive. Chosen Land, You are the cradle of the brave, To the conquerors You shall never surrender. Through the seas and mountains, Through the air and your azure skies, There is splendor in the poem And songs of beloved freedom. The sparkle of your flag Is shining victory. Its Stars and Sun, Forever shall never dim. Land of the sun, of glory, and affections, Life is heaven in your arms 'Tis our joy, when there be oppressors, To die because of you. (As aired on GMA Pinoy TV) GMA Network of the Philippines presented their own version of "Lupang Hinirang," the Philippine national anthem featuring reenactments of pivotal moments in Philippine history. ---- I think it was very well done, nice little history lesson for everyone. I would say it was "epic." I would've rather not had the part at the end, but oh well. Hopefully GMA can upload a TRUE HD version please?
BIG STARS STAND TALL: You can tell the big stars from the small fry when networks gather their contract artists on special occasions. Lupang Hinirang is the national anthem of the Philippines. Its music was composed in 1898 by Julian Felipe, with lyrics in Spanish adapted from the poem Filipinas, written by José Palma in 1899. Originally written as incidental music, it did not have words when it was adopted as the National Anthem of the Philippines and subsequently played during the proclamation of Philippine independence on June 12, 1898. During the American occupation of the Philippines, the colonial government banned the song from being played with the passage of the Flag Law. The law was repealed in 1919 and the song was translated into English and would be legalized as the "Philippine Hymn". The anthem was translated into Tagalog beginning in the 1940s. A 1956 Pilipino (standardised Tagalog) version, revised in the 1960s, serves as the present anthem. Lupang Hinirang in Filipino or Tagalog means "Chosen Land" in English. Some English sources erroneously translate Lupang Hinirang as "Beloved Land" or "Beloved Country"; however, "Beloved Land" is a translation of the first line of Filipinas, which would be Tiérra adorada, and "Beloved Country" is likewise a translation of the first line of the current version of the anthem, which would be Bayang Magiliw. The anthem is also colloquially known as Bayang Magiliw.

Back in the day (around the late 80's and early 90's), TV networks and cinemas used to broadcast the Philippine National Anthem arrangement of National Artist Lucio San Pedro (that rubato slow movement at the start, then the fast regular tempo), which was performed with exuberance by the University of the Philippines Concert Chorus (UPCC) accompanied by a video montage about "the beauty of the Philippines" courtesy of Philippine Airlines (PAL) and the Department of Tourism. Since I don't have a copy of that great video, I tried to render a "poor man's version" of that Lupang Hinirang masterpiece. Fortunately, through patience, skill and hard work, I was able to find some of the materials used by PAL in the original version. With a little imagination, I have filled in the gaps by "recycling" some video clips used in other Lupang Hinirang videos while taking a few creative liberties from my archive collection. Pardon the video quality! Most of the materials are quite OLD!!! Thank you! NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT INTENDED! FOR POSTERITY, INFORMATION AND EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY! Charice sings the Philippine National Anthem (Lupang Hinirang) during the Philippines vs The World boxing championship in the Araneta Coliseum on April 6, 2008.
* This rendition of Lupang Hinirang is intended for reflection. It is not meant to replace the official anthem normally played as a march. Recently a talented and nationally known film director, Mae Paner, crafted a new and moving version of our national anthem. This unusual audio visual presentation of "Lupang Hinirang"* has been shown many times in various events and has consistently touched the hearts and minds of viewers to the point of tears of awakening and gratefulness. Because of its consistent positive impact, PAGASA and Ehem! have decided to make this version of "Lupang Hinirang" available nationwide as a reflection piece to trigger a deeper awareness of oneself in relation to the country and encourage the emergence of positive images of the Philippine future. This new partnership of Ehem! with PAGASA is an addition to the existing anti-corruption initiatives of the Society of Jesus. For PAGASA it is a profound convergence with a "like-hearted" initiative grounded in authentic integrity, towards a massive ripple effect of truth-living towards nation building. We are writing to invite you and all the teachers and students of your school to participate in a timely and unprecedented nationwide effort to constructively reflect, through the medium of "Lupang Hinirang," on the present conditions of the Philippines and envision the Philippines of our hopes and dreams. The process we envision is simple and straightforward: *Download the video or email us if you need a ...
