RAPAPORT... While it is Diamond Trading Company (DTC) sight week, there was also some good news out of the retail sector from Zale and Charles & Colvard. As reported earlier this week, the DTC February sight held an estimated value of about $600 million, up 14 percent from one year ago. Prices rose, on average, by 7 percent. Zale executives today reviewed their progress towards meeting long-term goals as the retailer reported a strong second quarter profit. Zale closed 21 stores during the second fiscal quarter. The retailer remains focused on increasing bridal offerings, eliminating underperforming inventory, and reflecting a marketing strategy that remains true to its roots as the "diamond store." Executives said that Zale was continuing to review diamond prices and selectively adjusting prices upwards and as necessary. To balance higher gold prices, Zale is including offerings that use less expensive alternative metals. Zale confirmed during its call with analysts on February 23, that there were no asset sales in the pipeline, counter to the rumors recently that Piercing Pagoda may be on the block. Moissanite creator Charles & Colvard closed its fourth quarter and fiscal year on December 31, 2010, with zero debt. Furthermore, the company reported that net sales for the quarter rose by 48 percent to approximately $3.5 million. The improvement in net sales reflected new orders and increased re-orders of loose moissanite gemstones from the company's growing customer base ...

Melissa Zales Koller saw a need in her community to improve the schools her children were going to and she got involved. In a community that had doubled in size but whose school infrastructure was the same as in the 1970's she fought against a community that believed 'if it was good enough for our kids it should be good enough for yours'. Though she didn't believe she had the leadership background to fight she fought alongside other leaders and helped improve the schools. Later, when the schools were being challenged to repeal all the work she had done, Melissa was now the leader who was ready to take on the fight once more.
