Today special prosecutor Angela Corey announced the charge of 2nd degree murder, which is lesser than first degree, and greater than manslaughter. We don't want to rush to judgment before more evidence is evaluated, but the evidence we DO have now does warrant suspicion of Zimmerman's "self-defense" claim against an UNARMED teen who was much smaller and only had candy and an ice tea on him. Here are some interesting facts to ponder in this case: Zimmerman claims self defense against an unarmed teen and that he was attacked and beaten to the ground by the smaller (in weight) Trayvon. Here's CNN. "Today, we filed an information charging George Zimmerman with murder in the second degree. a capias has been issued for his arrest." Officials had cited Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law as one of the reasons Zimmerman wasn't initially arrested. That law allows people to "meet force with force" if they feel threatened in a public place. A second-degree murder charge does NOT involve premeditation. A University of Miami law professor tells The Wall Street Journal... Zimmerman Charged With 2nd Degree Murder,George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch volunteer who says he was acting in self-defense when he fatally shot an unarmed teenager in Sanford, Florida, has been charged with second-degree murder, a special prosecutor announced Wednesday. Zimmerman was arrested on a warrant and was in the custody of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, his new attorney, Mark O'Mara, told CNN legal analyst Mark NeJame.Zimmerman's claim of self-defense failed to quell an uproar about the decision by Sanford police not to initially charge him and about Florida's "stand your ground" law, which allows the use of deadly force by anyone who feels a reasonable threat of death or serious injury.Corey declined to disclose where Zimmerman was being held. In Florida, a conviction for second-degree murder carries a maximum sentence of life in prison. Lawyers for Zimmerman are entitled to request bond, Corey said. George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch captain who admits he shot unarmed Florida teenager Trayvon Martin, was charged with murder today and has been taken into custody. The charge of second degree murder was announced by Florida special prosecutor Angela Corey at a news conference this evening. Zimmerman is being held in the Orange County jail in Orlando, sources told ABC News. Corey opened the news conference by saying that she had spoken with Martin's parents and "we told those sweet parents" that they would get answers. The prosecutor's ruling is certain to provoke controversy in Sanford, Fla., where shooting took place and across the country. Zimmerman, 28, a white Hispanic neighborhood watch captain, shot and killed Martin, who was 17 and black, on Feb. 26 after following the teenager for several minutes.
