Operation Wacht am Rhein, known to the allies as the "Battle of The Bulge" is reenacted every year at Ft Indiantown Gap, PA. It is the biggest reenactment in America and is known as FIG. This years show drew 1500+ participants. Many go just to shop, as the flea market hold treasures you can't get anywhere else. There is a public battle on Saturday, which I was not able to capture as I had to leave early. My unit, Der Erste Zug, teamed up with 3rd Panzer Grenadier for the event and put together a barracks impression, complete with training, inspections, drills, etc. Below us was a Feldlazarett or field hospital. The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald Remember the Edmund. I am no Gordon Lightfoot but my song Remember the Edmund is a tribute to the Wreck, the Captain and Crew of the Edmund Fitzgerald, launched on June 8, 1958. Until 1971 she was the largest ship on the Great Lakes. Although she had reported having some difficulties during a gale on Lake Superior the Fitzgerald sank suddenly on November 10, 1975 in 535 feet of water without sending any distress signals. The site of the loss is: in Canadian waters approximately 17 miles from the entrance to Whitefish Bay. All 29 hands in the crew perished, presumably by drowning. The incident is the most famous disaster in the history of Great Lakes shipping, and is the subject of Gordon Lightfoots hit song, "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. The Fitzgerald departed down bound from Superior Wisconsin on the afternoon of Sunday, November 9, 1975 under Captain Ernest M. McSorley. She was heading for the steel mill on Zug Island, near Detroit, Michigan, with a full cargo of taconite. A second freighter, Arthur M. Anderson, destined for Gary Indiana, out of Two Harbors Minnesota, joined up with the Fitzgerald and being the faster ship, took the lead while Anderson trailed not far behind.
