As part of this year's Trenton Avenue Arts Festival, NKCDC hosted Philadelphia's first-ever Kensington Kinetic Sculpture Derby! The derby, which took place the afternoon of May 19th, was a celebration of art and human-powered transit, pitting sculptures against one another along a three-mile urban course. Sculptures weren't the only thing on parade that day though - the Kinetic Sculpture Derby is an economic development initiative to showcase some of our new local businesses - our businesses on parade!

Neighborhood Bike Works' giant two headed bird lumbered through time and space, crossing dirt, cobblestones, railroad tracks and concrete in the post industrial cityscape of Kensington, Philadelphia, before returning in kinetic glory to the Yard's Brewery after only one breakdown that required a hammer and half round file. NBW took home the best art trophy and shared in the glory! Thanks and shoutouts to all the bike shops, sponsors, artists and to the organizers at New Kensington CDC. Don't soar too close to the sun, glorious bird, you are only a collection several hundred pieces of bike junk flying in close formation! Well, perhaps it's stronger than that, but it's all held together with SIX MM BOLTS!
Some of the entries and the muddy finish of the 1st Annual Kensington Kinetic Sculpture Derby at the Trenton Avenue Arts Festival. Held in Philadelphia, PA on May 19, 2007.
Sleep deprived maniacs chop, grind and melt chunks of old bicycles, bed frames, bike racks and other assorted junk into a cross between a bicycle and a Humvee. The resulting Kinetic Sculpture will be decorated by NBW youth and volunteers in a later episode. Will it make it the six miles to the Kinetic Kensington Derby on May 19th? No mortal can answer that question, but one thing is certain: you just can't escape from the beat!

Theo Jansen is the Dutch creator of what he calls "Kinetic Sculptures," where nature and technology meet. Essentially these sculptures are robots powered by the wind only.
This was filmed in Rockingham City Shopping Centre, while I was on holiday in Australia. I think this is really impressive, must have taken ages to build. This machine is marked "George Rhoads '89" - has been there 18 years then!

Indoor, large Light & Optical & Kinetic air driven sculpture for public places. General Design: The modular structure of 10 cubes wide by 10 cubes deep by 10 cubes high form an almost 20ft *20ft *20ft monumental suspended cube which will be custom-sized for the client's particular space. There are interesting views from all sides, as well as from below. The cubes used are made of brushed aluminum (or if preferred -- painted ABS, color selection open) and Lucite (acrylic). Any light from a skylight or light spots above leaves a gently moving and ever- changing light and shape composition, as the cubes turn on the 10 suspension wires. Due to the light refraction in the Lucite, there will be subtle but eye-catching prism-colored reflections on the floor, as well as on the walls and the ceiling. For more info and movies please see www.ralfonso.com
OPERA is a motor-driven kinetic aluminum/steel sculpture, which rotates slowly around its vertical axis, as the lights in the solid lucite center slowly change color,- and water drops fall gently from the top of its inner center. I was fortunate to be selected as the Winner of the 1st Prize and the USD 425,000 Commission in the International Sculpture Competition for the luxury condominium Opera Place Development www.operaplacewpb.com in W. Palm Beach, Florida
Outdoor, monumental kinetic wind-driven sculpture for public places and plazas. EX is a wind-driven kinetic stainless steel sculpture in the form of an EXclamation Mark. The public can walk underneath the 60ft tall "EXclamation Mark" as it slowly tilts due to the wind on the upper part. A gyroscopic suspension system ensures that movement is possible in ALL horizontal directions, but only to a limited degree, as the main weight in the Exclamation Point always brings it back to its original position when the wind subsides! It has recently been exhibited for 6 months at the MomentuM Exhibition at the Grounds for Sculpture Museum. see www.ralfonso.com for more movies and info

This is a sculpture that reacts to the movement of people in the room. Each link of it's wormlike shape consists of a motorized power door lock, a working toy motion sensor, hand-dyed green fish-net stocking, green wires, relays, transistors, green zip ties, and tacks attaching it to waxed birch plywood. It can also see itself, so it falls into different patterns of movement depending on the situation. These sculptures look like toys or animals. They are also a visual and physical representation of the energy in a space. more later http://www.meridithpingree.com
website: http://www.stevehollinger.com This is a low-res video of "Kwajalein", a kinetic sculpture that is powered by sunlight. This sculpture was borne of a fairly recent exploration of the atomic age, reading and talking with scientists who have varying perspectives on a period in our history when our country conducted over 1200 atomic and nuclear tests - atmospheric, underground and oceanic. Scientific discovery has carried us through uncharted waters that we label "progress" -- with sights set based on a constructed rationale that may prove as illusory as blind faith. What are the consequences? If these thoughts don't make much sense, that's because I'm just working through them. So, what is progress, and where are we going? I'd really be interested in hearing any responses. *** update: my mac-based safari browser won't submit my comments. for the time being, if you need a response please include e-mail address or drop me a line **** related topics: kinetic sculpture kinetic sculptures heliotrope heat endothermic exothermic heliotropic sculpture sunlight solar energy solar powered solar power temperature ambient energy solar cell solar panel bimetallic bi-metallic alchemy conjurer magic ultraviolet alchemist magician mystery mysteries ambient light ambient heat ambient resonance energy artificial heart jellyfish skeleton cloudcatcher static electricity van de graaf blue heart cenotaph arts artist artwork mutoscope bifringent zoetrope cabinet of curiosities kunstkammern sideshow carnival hi how you doin? midway tarot cards ouija board boston new york paris london munich berlin kiwi tokyo voltaire lisbon stamford cambridge tokyo machu pichu borneo gypsy fortune teller liquid crystal somnabulist france french memory england english america american optical optics parallax stereogram artemesia absinthe wormwood papillon microphotograph microprinting polarize polarity bumberchute prism wavelength camera obscura pinhole photography magnetism gravitation carbon morphology topology levitation aether whiskey snapdragon fiddlehead seaweed autobahn splinter gangrene leprosy cardullos morbier massachusetts institute of technology harvard stanford conjurer voodoo piltdown fiji mermaid carnivore barnum muybridge marey velveeta praxinoscope expressionism max beckman george grosz otto dix murnau nosferatu caligari fritz lang schreck chaney golem sturgeon museum of modern art da vinci antigravity de sade wimshurst spectervision stereo realist kinetiscope houdini cartier bresson toussaud carl jung jungian synchronicity jurassic technology moma louvre biennial venice biennale decordova guggenheim hi dad storm king dia beacon mutter straussian museum of natural history mfa fossil butte wyoming museum of fine arts miami art electron atom neutron pulsar albedo quasar quark photon neutrino ultraviolet infrared maritime show chase gallery whitney jean tinguely marcel duchamp joseph cornell atomic clock nuclear radiation bikini island atoll spiderweb gamma ray x-ray atmospheric polaroid emulsion copper etching glasswork submarine rhesus waxwork metalurgy aerogel nomex albertus seba ernst haeckel mica cantelope jurassic lower cretaceous cambrian precambrian eocene breadcrumbs
