perception is is just an illusion, so we might as well maximize it. Reality is not a great story, or a great place for need to live. Unfortunately I ran out of time and left some comments unanswered... I guess there will definitely be a volume 4
Presenter Michio Kaku demonstrates "tele-immersion" technology by dancing in a virtual world with people who are hundreds of miles away. They are dancing with each other's virtual 3-dimensional images, transmitted to them in real time. Kaku suggests that 3-dimensional technologies like tele-immersion could be "the evolutionary successor of the telephone, and might even reduce air travel" (and real human contact). Kaku envisages business conferences, Christmas parties, TV programmes and football games all taking place in virtual worlds. The growth of online communications seems to be serving as a stepping stone towards a virtual world to come. Kaku points out that Second Life is "not just escapist entertainment - people actually live in these worlds. They even fall in love." Then we are shown a couple who met in this virtual world and then got married 6 months later in the real world. The woman now earns her money selling virtual products in a virtual world, and is excited by the prospect of Second Life evolving into something bigger and better. Kaku says that by 2020 there will be "an entire 3-dimensional universe in cyberspace with virtual countries and governments, virtual schools and universities, virtual property and stock markets, and virtual families and friends." Then futurist and transhumanist frontman Ray Kurzweil tells us that virtual reality is going to become more and more like real realities, but it has a lot of advantages over real reality e.g. you can share a virtual reality environment with someone hundreds of miles away, you can be somebody else, you can change the environment quickly. But it won't be real, and people will never know reality and truth while they are choosing to exist within a virtual world, as opposed to living a real life in the real world. ------------------------- Dec. 17, 2007 - Alan Watt "Cutting Through The Matrix" on RBN (adverts removed) "Exodus from Physical Slavery to Virtual Slavery - The Surrender of Consciousness" mp3 - http://cuttingthrough.jenkness.com/CTTM/Alan_Watt_CTTM_LIVEonRBN_52_Exodus_from_Physical_Slavery_to_Virtual_Slavery_Dec172007.mp3 transcript - http://www.cuttingthroughthematrix.com/transcripts/Alan_Watt_CTTM_LIVEonRBN_52_Exodus_from_Physical_Slavery_to_Virtual_Slavery_Dec172007.html (Article: "'Exodus' to virtual worlds predicted" BBC News, bbc.co.uk - Dec. 11, 2007. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7138103.stm ) http://www.outlawjournalism.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=603

Using the infrared camera in the Wii remote and a head mounted sensor bar (two IR LEDs), you can accurately track the location of your head and render view dependent images on the screen. This effectively transforms your display into a portal to a virtual environment. The display properly reacts to head and body movement as if it were a real window creating a realistic illusion of depth and space. By Johnny Chung Lee, Carnegie Mellon University. In 1991, EVL produced its first CAVE® (CAVE Automatic Virtual Environment) prototype, a two screen stereo projection system with single-user tracking and navigation. In late 1991 - early 1992, a 4 screen (3 walls/floor) CAVE® system - now including surround-sound - was completed and premiered at the annual SIGGRAPH Conference. This video provides an overview of the CAVE system/technology and a glimpse of some of the applications being developed at the time which cover a broad range of scientific and academic disciplines. To see a more detailed video highlighting applications developed for the CAVE® debut at SIGGRAPH 92, see the video entitled Scientists in Wonderland. producer/director: Dana Plepys evl contributors: Sumit Das, Thomas A. See www.prv.com for a Channel 7 News story on the technology, and see the prototype in action. This is a plural patent-protected sensing technology with potential applications in: Gaming (stomps Wii w/Virtual Controls & Virtual Ghosts); Health & Fitness (collect workout metrics automagically); Music (virtual keyboards); Computer Add-Ons (virtual keyboard for PDAs such as iPaq and iPhone, "foot mouse" for desktops so can leave hands on keyboard); Adaptive Equipment for the Disabled, and MORE. MORE INFO available on request: Scenario2.doc describes a VCAML-enabled computer game and is AWESOME!; PowerPoint presentation with NDA/CDA. The future is: using a PDA DEVICE SUCH AS THE iPHONE WITHOUT TOUCHING IT. Imagine a piece of sloppy pizza in hand and sending text messages without using a stylus and without wear and tear and mess to a touch screen. No more tiny keyboards either. Merely the motion of your hand through the air is converted into computer commands.
