Amount: $18,000 stipend plus mandatory standard fees (excluding tuition). In addition, if invited to present the results of their collaborative activities at a conference held during the 2010-11 academic year, awardees will be reimbursed up to $500 toward their travel expenses.
Purpose: The Graduate Research Mentorship (GRM) Program is designed to assist students in acquiring and developing advanced research skills under faculty mentorship. The Program
is open to doctoral students in the humanities, social sciences and other disciplines where
students have little opportunity for academic apprentice appointments or other University
funding relevant to their graduate training. An expected outcome is to increase the number
of students who complete the PhD degree and who show promise as candidates for faculty
appointments. Faculty mentors are expected to be in the same locale as the student partici-
pants and assist them with research leading to the development of a doctoral dissertation.
Program Expectations:
Awardees will be asked to submit a year-end program evaluation to the Graduate Division.
Faculty mentors will also be asked to submit a year-end evaluation of their participation in
the program.
Students receiving the Graduate Research Mentorship Award should not be employed
more than 25% time, so that employment will not adversely affect the student’s degree
completion.
All GRM participants must submit the following to the Graduate Division (1252 Murphy
Hall) in order to quality for the $500 travel allowance:
• Graduate Research Mentorship Recipient Conference Travel Form
(available at www.gdnet.ucla.edu/asis/stusup/travlfrm.pdf)
• Graduate Division General Conditions for Student Travel
(available at www.gdnet.ucla.edu/asis/stusup/travelcndtns.pdf)
Eligibility The program is open to doctoral students who
1. will have completed at least one but no more than four years of UCLA doctoral study
by the beginning of the fellowship year (priority will be given to students currently
in year one, two or three of doctoral study),
2. are not yet advanced to candidacy
3. are U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
Eligibility: The Program is open to doctoral students in the humanities, social sciences and other areas where students have little opportunity for academic apprentice appointments or other University funding relevant to their graduate training. Individuals who have not previously received a GRM will be given priority. Individuals from cultural, racial, linguistic, geographic and socioeconomic backgrounds that are currently underrepresented in graduate education are especially encouraged to participate in the program. Departments are encouraged
to nominate students who will contribute to the diversity mission of the University. These submission criteria, except for the not-yet-advanced-to-candidacy requirement, also
apply to the Eugene Cota-Robles award recipients who are activating their Graduate Research Mentorship funding year.
Application Procedures:
Applicants must be nominated by their department or school. To apply for nomination,
students must submit three sets (original plus two copies) of the following directly to
their department:
• The UCLA Fellowship Application for Continuing Graduate Students Confirmation Page
(www.gdnet.ucla.edu/asis/flap/apply.htm)
• A proposal outlining training goals and other collaborative activities (no more than
four pages, double spaced) that you and your faculty member will undertake during
the tenure of the award.
• An unofficial transcript that includes Fall Quarter 2009 grades. Do not submit an
URSA report or Degree Progress Report (DPR). If Fall Quarter is your first academic
term at UCLA, please include an unofficial transcript from the last university attended.
• Your resume or curriculum vitae.
• The Graduate Fellowships Letter of Recommendation Cover Form (www.gdnet.ucla.edu/asis/
stusup/letterrec.pdf) plus a letter on departmental letterhead from the faculty member who will serve as the mentor describing the mentor relationship and the project that the student will complete during the academic year. If a mentoring relationship has already been established between applicant and faculty member, describe additional mentoring activities that would occur during this period. Please submit the original
and two copies of both the letter of recommendation and the cover form in a sealed envelope.

Amount: A maximum $4,700 stipend. If invited to present results of their collaborative activities at a conference, awardees will be reimbursed up to $500 toward travel expenses.
Purpose: The Graduate Summer Research Mentorship (GRSM) Program is designed to provide financial support for doctoral students in the humanities, social sciences and other areas where students have little opportunity for academic apprentice appointments or other university funding relevant to their graduate training during the summer months. A specific
objective of the program is to promote opportunities for students to work closely with a faculty mentor in developing a paper for presentation at an academic conference and/or for publication. General goals are to facilitate close working relationships between faculty and
students during the early stages of graduate education, to promote timely degree progress
and to encourage a level of creative scholarship and research productivity that helps prepare
students for successful academic careers.
Program Expectations:
Participants are expected to complete a draft of a paper (either single-authored by the stu-
dent or co-authored with the faculty mentor) by the end of the summer. This paper should
be submitted for presentation at a professional conference and/or for publication sometime
during the following academic year. It is expected that the faculty mentor will be in the
same locale as the awardee during the summer and committed to working closely with the student. The entire group of student participants and their mentors will be asked to attend occasional meetings to discuss their specific goals and progress and to provide general feedback on the program. The Graduate Division will offer selected programmatic activities (e.g.,
workshops on such topics as graduate school funding, human subjects protection, getting
into print, career opportunities, presentations, etc.), and student participants are expected
to make every effort to take part in these activities. GSRM awardees may not work more than 25% time. All GSRM participants must submit the following to the Graduate Division (1252 Murphy Hall) in order to qualify for the $500 travel allowance:
• Graduate Research Mentorship Recipient Conference Travel Form
(available at www.gdnet.ucla.edu/asis/stusup/travlfrm.pdf)
• Certificate of Completion of the online Human Research Protection Program Certification, Education and Training course
