My name is Kumi Yuasa and I am the Associate Producer for the upcoming PSN game echochrome. This is my first post on the blog, and I’m excited that my debut here on the blog is to announce that free PS3 and PSP echochrome demos will be available for download tomorrow on the PlayStation Store on the PS3. The PSP demo version will also be available for download on the PlayStation Store for PC.
Perhaps you have read about echochrome here, here, here or even here. There is a lot of excitement for it - N’Gai Croal of Level Up even wrote, “…as of last E3, the 2008 game we’ve been looking forward to the most is echochrome.”
It’s a fun and addictive puzzle game with really elegant and simple graphics. The concept is inspired by the famous MC Escher artwork, which explores infinity, architecture and impossible constructions. In echochrome, you control the camera and perspective on an infinite canvas, guiding a mannequin figure by carefully tilting and turning the level to create a continual pathway, allowing your character to walk safely through the design. Puzzled?!? Check out this video and you’ll see what I mean!

There is no single way to get through a level in echochrome. You and your friends will find different ways to clear levels so each time you play will be different.
The demos you can download tomorrow will take you through a brief tutorial and give you the basic idea of how to progress through the puzzles, but I wanted to also tell you what to expect when the final game is available for download in May. In addition to the 56 exclusive levels for each of the PS3 and PSP versions of echochrome (112 unique levels overall), you will be able to create your own puzzles from scratch and share them with your friends, or even the world!
On PS3, you can upload your created levels to the developers through the game’s interface. Once uploaded, your creation will be considered by the developers for a future downloadable content release. In other words, if selected, people around the world could be playing your level!! Additional content will be available from Day 1. Initially, however, these levels will come from Japan or Asia since the game has been out there for a while already. We’re not exactly sure when we’ll start including US players’ levels, but we’re excited and waiting for customized levels from all of you!! You can also share the levels with your friends by sending your creations directly to them over the PlayStation Network. Stumping your friends is REALLY fun!
And for the PSP version, you can share the levels you create with other people in your area via wireless Ad Hoc. Cool, right?!?
Well, there will be more to come on echochrome soon, including some great wallpapers for your PS3 and PSP. But in the meantime, be sure to download the free demos tomorrow and give them a whirl! And let us know what you think!

["dt*518baab2953d672d"]},"e29625c9ddf0189d":
Good news for all North American EOJ players, cards have hit stores earlier than expected and we have heard that many of you have already bought your Set 2 cards and have started building your decks and organizing your strategies. As some of you may have already noticed, we are pleased to inform you of the following…
The MGO development team has created a patch for the MGO Beta client, bringing it to version 1.02. This patch is intended to resolve and improve any connectivity issues on the client side. The patch is now available through the MGO Beta client. You will additionally need to download and install the 1.01 patch, if you have not already done so, also available through the MGO Beta client.
Additionally, the MGO development team has made significant improvements on the server side, adding more gameplay servers, and also improving the code running on the servers to optimize performance.
With these solutions in place, gameplay of the MGO Beta test has now been made available. Please remember, to compensate for the delay, the Metal Gear Online Beta test gameplay period has been extended a week, now ending on 05/11/2008.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: Please note that your Metal Gear Online Beta Unique Product Voucher Codes (UPVCs), used to redeem the download of the Metal Gear Online Beta client, will only be valid up until 05/05/2008, so please make sure to redeem them by then.
We would also like to point out that we have created a “simplified” Konami ID “quick registration” form, available at [LINK: http://id.konami.net ], which is required to access and play the MGO Beta. Not only has it been designed to ease any connection issues, but to ease the registration process as well.
Here are the direct notes from the MGO team in Japan:
“We would first like to offer our most sincere apologies to all participants of the METAL GEAR ONLINE PREMIERE BETA test for all inconveniences caused thus far. At the same time, we would like to inform you details of the possible causes of the problem along with the actions we have taken in order to resolve them.
Konami ID
Initial problems were caused by the extraordinary numbers of customers trying to login to the site in order to create a KONAMI ID in order to take part in the beta test. In response, we have increased server capacity as well as creating a separate KONAMI ID registration site specifically for customer wanting to take part in the METAL GEAR ONLINE PREMIERE BETA test.
METAL GEAR ONLINE PREMIERE BETA test
In order to reduce the load on our server, we have implemented a queuing system where the number of players that can login to the server is kept at a certain level over a period of time. Added to this, the client has been updated so that the time out settings when logging in have been relaxed. This may though, lead to a longer wait when trying to login.
At peak times, you may be placed in a queue for places in our server. In such a case, we would like to recommend that you try to login after a period of time.
It was also discovered that connecting to the server on creating and registering your character was very difficult. This again, was due to very high levels of traffic. We have increased server capacity and have also improved both the system performance and the server program in response .
We will be carrying out further improvements between 00:00 on 04/26/2008 with the resumption of the beta test as the game is scheduled to enter full service on 06/12/2008. We would like to apologize once again for all inconveniences caused.”
Once again, Konami would like to apologize for any difficulties experienced, and we offer our deepest thanks for your patience. Your participation in the MGO Beta test, and excitement for the game, is very meaningful to us!
Please stay tuned to konami.com, the PS Blog, the Konami ID site, and Konami Japan’s MGO teaser site for all the latest MGO Beta test status updates.
If you need assistance, please contact Konami support via http://www.konami-data.com/support/ and you can email via mgobetasupport@konami.com
Thank you!

["dt*518baab2953d672d"]},"71c8d09bf9be79de":

That’s one month done for SOCOM.com, so you’re due for another weekly wrap-up. Don't worry, Konami is on the case. The beta was recently given an update, adding a new map and gameplay mode. The map is called Midtown Maelstrom and is set in the Middle-Eastern town that also serves as Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots' setting. Midtown Maelstrom promises to be a paradise for the more tactically-oriented players, offering a lot of narrow alleys and passages. The new gameplay mode, on the other hand, is Sneaking Mission. One player plays as Snake, while everybody else gets divided into Red and Blue teams, with each of the three groups having their own paths to victory. For Snake to win, he must get a set number of dog tags from other players. For the teams, whichever side takes Snake out first wins. If nobody manages to kill Snake, the side with the most number of kills once time runs out wins.Konami also announced that starting with this update, rankings will be updated after each maintenance session. Why? It's the release of the oft-delayed Grand Theft Auto IV, Rockstar North's highly controversial and much awaited video game. Those itching to annoy cops or run over pedestrians - while fulfilling missions on the side, of course - will finally get their long desired chance upon GTA4's launch for both the Microsoft Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.But Nintendo Wii owners won't be left out of this hectic games week, since Nintendo will be rolling out Mario Kart Wii, the fast (and sometimes chaotic) racing title. This week is pretty much a battle between blue shells and organized/disorganized crimes, as well as iron-clad heroes in the form of the multi-platform release of the Iron Man movie tie-in game. Are you ready? If you are, then let's start off the list with...Grand Theft Auto 4. We've been waiting for this title for a long time coming, and gamers have endured a lot of flak from the likes of Jack Thompson while lying in wait for the release of much-anticipated sequel to the popular Grand Theft Auto franchise. This may be the wackiest Wii racer to date; and if you're a big fan of the genre, there shouldn't be any reason why you shouldn't grab this game.Nintendo Wii - April 27, 2008US 49.99 (includes Wii Wheel)ESRB EveryoneNintendoIron Man. The prevalent theory is that it will be a Star Wars game, but this has never been confirmed. BioWare is still mum on the topic, but they do provide a few clues. In a recent interview, BioWare's Ray Muzyka gives us hints on what to expect from the new MMO. No solid details are given (of course). At least we get a vague picture of the project, especially for those who are familiar with BioWare's style (think Mass Effect):We want to be innovators in the space. We're trying to bring some fresh stuff to the mix. We still have great reverence for a lot the great games, but we're also trying to add some new things.Like all Bioware games, we're focusing on story, customization, exploration, combat... I think it would be really exciting to be able to play a game which has character depth and interaction and story in a way that works within social settings. If they're going to follow the style of storytelling they did for Mass Effect, then we can expect a lot from the MMO. Speaking of Mass Effect, Muzyka also squashed any rumors that the game will reach the PlayStation 3 platform, saying:Whenever we bring a game to a new platform, we always look at it with reverence and respect. The conversion to PC was something we only thought of doing late in the 360 development. [...] Right now that's it, that's all we've got in development for Mass Effect, just the PC version and the 360.Which is not to say that it will never get ported to the Sony platform, but it's not looking good that it will happen either. Of course, he never said anything about which platforms the sequel will appear on. Some of you might assume that we could have a Wind Waker or Okami-style cel-shaded game on our laps come Winter. Wait, cel-shaded?Well, if you look at Ubisoft Montreal's record, they just released Naruto: Rise of a Ninja for the 360 late last year. With that in mind, cel-shaded graphics are pretty much within their capabilities. However, if it does turn out to be cel-shaded, it might not sit well with some traditional fans who have already grown used to the nature of the Sands of Time series. We'll just have to wait for more details, of course. They tried best to hide spoilers but some might crop up, you’ve been warned.
How’s the game? Any good?
Yes, yes it is.
Should I get the PlayStation or Xbox 360 version?
That’s up to you. They’re nearly identical and it’s hard to go wrong with either version. We found the feature set to be better on the 360, but the PS3 holds up a bit better technically.
Is there split screen multiplayer? What about local multiplayer via LAN?
No, multiplayer for both systems is only online.
Whats the deal with the PS3 hard drive install?
Installation is mandatory and kicks off when you insert the disc for the first time. We timed the 3.4 GB install at 7 minutes and 20 seconds.
Does the Xbox 360 have a hard drive installation?
No. There is no required installation, nor is there an optional one.
Can I remap the controls? Is there a control option for lefties?
Controls can’t be remapped, but you can choose between Standard and Classic modes. Switching between the two will switch shoulder buttons for aiming and firing, among other changes. There is no special consideration for left handed players.
Is there an option for custom soundtracks?
No, the game’s radio stations will have to suffice. Xbox 360 owners can still stream music from their hard drive or an iPod, but music played via the Xbox 360 Guide will continue to play over cell phone calls and cut scenes. If you’re just going out for a stroll in GTA IV, it’s still an option.
Does the PlayStation 3 version have any kind of achievements or accomplishments?
Outside of the standard stat tracking, which tallies up your kills, deaths, arrests, distance traveled, passed missions, stunt jumps, and other extracurricular activities, there are no Xbox Live Achievements-like features for the PS3.
How’s the online performance?
Solid. We played for a pretty long, 16-player session before release via Xbox Live and were impressed. Microsoft says it’s ramping up in anticipation of the release, adding hardware and hoping for smooth sailing. We have yet to go online with the PlayStation 3 version. Sony and Gamespy declined to comment about the status of the PlayStation Network.
How many players does the online mode support?
Up to sixteen players, depending on the game type.
Can I have sex with prostitutes?
In the game? Yes!
When can you trigger the “bullet-time”? Is it only while driving, or can you do it when walking around/shooting too?
You can switch to “bullet-time” during stunt jumps. While driving, hold B/Circle (or toggle to it using the Back/Select button) to enter the cinematic view. While in the cinematic view, click the left analog stick to toggle bullet time on and off.
Is there a huh, “normal” menu as in, not the cell phone one? For things like stats, audio, HUD and controller options, or just ofr ismply leaving the game paused? Or is this handled all in our cellphone?
Yes, when you press the Start button, you’ll see options like Controls, Video, Audio and more.
How does the game end?
A list of credits scrolls vertically, with an extensive list of contributors.
Do helicopters have weapons?
Some do. Good luck hitting anything with the mini-guns! You might have better luck taking out foes with the chopper’s blades.
Is ammunition only obtained by purchase? Are there (oh, the shame) cheats in this game?
Ammunition can be purchased from gun shops or one of your gun-running friends. It can also be collected from the corpses of your enemies. There are cheats, but we’ve yet to use any.
Can Niko buy the different outfits we see him wear or are they unlocked via missions?
Niko can buy new clothing, but some of Liberty City’s clothing shops aren’t immediately available to you.
Can you ride bicycles or skateboards?
Not that we’ve seen. You also can’t ride in shopping carts.
Can you swim, or do those damn sharks eat you?
Niko can swim.
Is there a saved film or replay feature? What about saved screenshots?
Nope! This is certainly something we’d like to see added in a future game or update, as some of the player deaths are begging for a replay.
Are there different camera angles the player can select while on foot?
Sort of. The camera will pan further out or in, depending on your preference. While in vehicles or on the train, you can choose a cinematic camera mode, which is more cool than it is playable.
What if me and a couple friends just want to wreak havoc in Liberty City, no game modes, can we do that?
Yes, there is a Free Mode in multiplayer that can be played however you want.
How does the save system work?
There is an autosave feature, which you can turn on or off. The game will save your progress after each successfully completed mission. You can also choose to save at any time in one of Niko’s safehouses.
Does GTA IV have Feature X from Vice City or San Andreas?
Character customization isn’t as deep as it was in San Andreas, so you won’t be hitting the gym or tattoo parlor to shape your own unique Niko. You can’t own property, fly planes, customize cars or parachute off of skyscrapers. In multiplayer, you can choose how your character looks, with options for hair, hats, tops, pants, glasses and more. As you progress in ranked online matches, you’ll unlock new looks for your character.
Are there subtitles? What about subtitle support for other languages?
Yes, and they come in handy, considering that Niko and his cousin will occasionally speak in their native tongue and characters like Little Jacob are nigh indecipherable. The game offers subtitles and menu translations in English, French and Spanish.
Is lock-on targeting in multiplayer? Doesn’t that kind of ruin it?
Lock-on targeting is an option in multiplayer matches, set by the game host. Even with lock-on targeting, however, there is still a level of skill involved, as accuracy increases while crouched, analog targeting tweaking can increase your likelihood of headshots and “pray and spray” firing will decrease accuracy. There are many, many options available to you in multiplayer, from having other players show up on your radar, to weather, to traffic density.
How is the SIXAXIS used in GTA IV?
Not well, not well at all.
Can you run police, fireman, or taxi extra missions in GTA IV?
You can take on police missions via the LCPD computer. There’s one in every cop car. You can earn taxi missions, but they’re handled through one of your friends. We haven’t seen any fireman missions, but we have taken the fire truck out for spin (and pedestrian hose-down).
What are the side-missions like? Worth doing?
In addition to the ones listed above, you can call up some of your other friends who will set up street races, package deliveries and assassinations. They may be less compelling (and more difficult) than the missions offered in the core story, but they’re still a blast.
Is online multiplayer cross platform?
No.
How does death/getting busted work? Do you still lose your weapons?
If you’re “killed” you’ll respawn at the nearest hospital, with your weapons cache intact. If you’re arrested, the LCPD will take your weapons and you’ll have to re-arm yourself. For the record, I have yet to be busted by the fuzz.
Can you enter buildings in multiplayer?
Yes, you can access buildings that are open to you in single-player, at least as far as regular businesses like Cluckin’ Bell or the TW@ internet cafe. You cannot, however, order food, play mini-games or use a computer. The most heartbreaking part is that you can visit a strip club, but there are no strippers. It’s certainly been a busy week, and once again, we’d like to take a second to thank you for all the great compliments and feedback from our previous installments – and of course, your enthusiasm for all that is Metal Gear!
We’ll pick up where we left off … As many of you know, gameplay of the Metal Gear Online Beta for the PLAYSTATION 3 is well underway as of the time of this post – please see the last bunch of Metal Gear PS Blog posts for full details on the Metal Gear Online Beta program and content to date.
First, we’d like to clarify, once again, because we see people still asking about this - Metal Gear Online comes with Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. It is not a separate product. Metal Gear Online is the online multiplayer component of MGS4. We will be expanding MGO over time through new downloadable content (DLC), such as, maps, weapons, skills, and much more.
MGO is not a paid subscription service, you can play online totally free right out of the box - we know some of you thought there might be some payment because of the last step of Konami ID registration, but that is to confirm your identity for future potential microtransaction content updates (you don’t have to register any payment info right now anyhow). There is no payment necessary to play, and - again - that is for future potential microtransaction content updates, when that content is available, should you want it.
Good news – for those of you who might not have yet received a Unique Product Voucher Code (UPVC) to download the MGO Beta client, there are still a few opportunities to obtain one from the very limited batch of UPVC’s being given away now through our promotional partners at IGN, Games Radar, and the Mad Gamer Network – and some of you PS GAP members should have a special surprise in your inbox too J. Please carefully follow the instructions on our partner’s sites for your chance to win! Again, this batch of MGO Beta UPVC’s are available in an EXTREMELY limited quantity, so don’t wait, hurry and register now!
Next, we are happy to announce NEW content for the MGO Beta is LIVE NOW!
We have included one new map Midtown Maelstrom

This is a part of the Middle East stage in MGS4. This consists of some main streets and alternate routes. Numerous alleys are in between buildings, and are dark, narrow, and very confusing.
Next, we have released a new gametype rule, Sneaking Mission.

In this rule, there will be one character and two teams in the game. Snake, Red team, and Blue team. Snake’s mission is to collect a certain number of dog tags, by having other players stunned or held up. Red and Blue teams’ mission is to defeat Snake certain times or defeat more players in the opposing team. If more than 10 people are in the game, another player may play as Snake’s mini robotic sidekick Mk. II, to assist the Snake player. If you are playing as Snake, you have many of his incredible abilities available to you – such as the camouflage!
There are some other random things about MGO and the MGO Beta that we’d like to address:
You may not have noticed, but in the MGO Main Menu, you can access the Community Site right from in game. You can also access it here http://mgo2web.konami.com/us/community/ from a PC/web browser at any time. You need to have created a character to access the site. Once inside, you can manage and view your friends, clan, profile, stats, blog, and there will be many other features introduced over time. Additionally, you can post feedback in the forum, and this is really the best place to get your MGO feedback to us (yes, we do also try to read all the comments here at the PS Blog and elsewhere – and, I’m sorry, I wish we had time to respond to each and every one – we try to address as much as possible in these posts).
Another issue is it seems some of you have had issues activating your mics – please make sure you have connected your USB/Bluetooth mic correctly via the PS3 system settings. If you have, then simply hold down the select button in-game, and you will see a message appear that your mic is on as well as a mic activity status message with your name (if you’re speaking), if you are in a lobby you will see a flashing mic indicator next to your name.
Please also try out the training modes in game thoroughly, as they can be helpful for newcomers and veterans alike. Here you can learn the intricacies of CQC, weapons, movement, and just about any other gameplay question you might have. There are also extensive options in game for tweaking your controls (e.g., inversion, camera speed, weapon shortcuts, etc), ui, and much more – please be sure to take some time to set up MGO exactly how you like!
Lastly on MGO, to add a friend, you want to do a player search by their character name (not Konami ID or Game ID), which are case sensitive (e.g., Hideo and hideo could be separate characters). Please note, your friend must be logged into MGO at that time to appear (otherwise you’ll get a “not found” error). To check up on your friends, just go to your Friend List inside the Personal menu. Your added friends will appear here, and if they are online, it will show what lobby they are in too (if its unranked and they’re in game, you can join them immediately, if there’s room in their game).
Please don’t forget to check out the latest KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS REPORT from Ryan Payton at Kojima Productions in Japan!
We’ll see you here next week on the PS Blog, for the next installment of Metal Gear Mondays!

["dt*518baab2953d672d"]},"0d22d7c0acbea728":
If you've been keeping up with the takeover dealie with SCi Entertainment, then you'd have caught wind of the company revealing that it had just shot down one of its potential suitors. Now we catch wind of that suitor itself revealing its identity to the public, and it's none other than Infogrames, the people who brought us the Alone in the Dark series. Let's see what they have to say about the deal that could've been. So, just what went wrong? No one knows for sure, but Infogrames did say that they had quite the interesting offer to make SCi. They didn't reveal the numbers or the financial details of this offer, but they did say that as a company, it had what SCi Entertainment was looking for in a potential buyer. Infogrames' statement, verbatim:Infogrames has sufficient resources to satisfy the cash element of its indicative offer and has secured commitments in relation to the potential working capital requirements of the enlarged group. Importantly, Infogrames is in a position to move expeditiously with its proposal.Well, that certainly explains the mystery suitor that SCi turned down in an earlier update. It's just too bad that Infogrames got turned down - it certainly would've been interesting to see what the Alone in the Dark team could have done with Lara Croft, seeing as they have the moolah to make the relationship work. But most importantly, it was mentioned that the original cast of the previous Ghostbusters movies lent a helping hand to also revitalize the story and plot."[Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis] co-wrote the script for the videogame. They introduced a lot of stuff that we didn t think of," said Terminal Reality president Mark Randel. He added that Ramis (Egon, Ghostbusters) added a heroine to the game, and introduced that virtual lady as a love interest for Peter Venkman (you know, the womanizing parapsychologist played by Bill Murray).Aykroyd (Ray, Ghostbusters), who will begin recording his voice for the game this week, also listed all the equipment that the Ghostbusters use and put that into the mythos of the game. In continuance to being faithful to the franchise, Terminal Reality will be including Stay Puf't, the popular Ghostbuster mascot, in the game, and will even be using the original theme by Ray Parker Jr. for the soundtrack - completely un-remixed. Unfortunately, in order to keep authenticity of the Ghostbusters' "look and feel," Terminal Reality will be clipping out online cooperative mode for the campaign of the game. They have multiplayer planned to kick off out-of-the-box, but it's limited to either a competitive, ghoul catching romp, or a separate section for cooperative busting action against waves of ghosts. Terminal Reality studio director John O'Keefe said:We want you to feel like you re a Ghostbuster, and so co-op with your friends playing the other Ghostbusters we wouldn t be able to control that comedic timing and delivery of lines. Even though co-op would be an interesting aspect we made a conscious decision because we wanted to capture the Ghostbusters experience, but there is an online component of the game that is cooperative but it s nothing to do with the story.Apparently, Terminal Reality is putting truckloads of work into Ghostbusters: The Videogame, and the DS, PC, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Wii, and Xbox 360 versions will all have their own exclusive content and features. Or at least, that's what head-honcho Randel said when asked how gamers would best reap the full Ghostbusters gaming experience."In a cross-platform game, it s a good idea to have a little bit of exclusive content for each system. It makes everybody happy," he added. He iterates that no money was involved for exclusive content on any platform, even though the Ghostbusters franchise is currently a property of Sony Pictures. He confirmed that for the PS3 and 360 versions, Terminal Reality has exclusive downloadable content ready. And while we're on the topic of exclusives, Randel hinted that if Ghostbusters: The Videogame was PS3-only, it would have gone far. He explained: We re running the same game for both platforms but if we made a PS3-only game, for example, you could double the amount of objects on screen that you re seeing.True enough, the Infernal Engine was tuned to be identical on both the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3. Executive producer Brendan Goss, however, showed off the unique technology they have for the PS3 version, just to prove that the Infernal Engine was made for Sony's next generation console. At the Sierra Spring Break 08, the two versions were demonstrated side by side. Goss explained while a Ghostbuster walked down a cobbled street: We're demoing on both systems so you can see the game is fully running on both systems at the same performance level. Something unique for the PS3 is the displacement mapping. The ground you're looking at is only two polygons, it's a completely flat plane. We get the illusion of the 3D brick surface because of the relief map. But the Infernal Engine does either platform justice in the graphics and physics department, as many would muse after Terminal Reality demonstrated the technology of their in-house engine. A level was shown where 1,000 in-level actors were individually simulated, while running amok in panic and bumping into other people and shoving them off. Another demo with Stay Puff't and 500 moving metal objects was shown, and exhibited absolutely no jitter when they plopped 1,000 more objects that bounced and rolled against the other dynamic objects in the scene. But all in all, things are looking pretty good for Fiddy and his crew, as Swordfish Studios is pretty much doing things by the book in terms of game development. So, good news first: the game will feature an online co-op mode that's pretty convenient. Described by game director Julian Widdows as "drop-drop out, absolute hot swap," players can choose on the fly which character they want to play as, as well as have complete control on when they want to join in a co-op game or leave out of it. We're interested as to how they'll handle it, game-wise - would it be like a chopper or something dropping off one of Fiddy's friends, to help him in the battle? That would certainly be awesome. Now for the potentially-upsetting news. It seems that the game itself is going to be locked at 30 frames per second, as opposed to the 60 fps golden standard of today's next-gen games. When asked about this decision, Julian Widdows had an answer:Historically we ve found that as long as you have consistent 30, then that s absolutely fine for a shooter. The 60 mantle is a difficult one to achieve, especially when you re going for the graphical quality we re going for. When you drop down from 60, it all feels pretty rough. However at consistent 30, even if you drop a frame occasionally you never really notice it, so that s the decision behind that.Well, that certainly makes sense. If you remember one of the Sony PlayStation 2's launch titles, Killzone, they did the same thing - and it turned out to be a pretty good game in itself. Let's hope that it's the same with 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand. He couldn't confirm the cost of the add-on, but he did claim that it would be cheaper than an expansion. Sydow explains: In fact, we re not allowed to call it an expansion pack. Marketing won t even allow us to call it a mission pack, so add-on is the correct word at the moment.Soviet Assault will take players into the post-Cold War conflict ravaging the world, only this time from the invaders' perspective. Sydow promises that the Russian characters will not be the "Americanized Russian" types."How would Russians feel? How would the Soviet Union feel in a war? And how would it feel to be a soldier there?" the project manager continued.World in Conflict: Soviet Assault - at least for the Xbox 360 - will sport voice command support for ordering squads around. One player takes on his role, complete with OctoCamo, Solid Eye and other handy items. The aim is to move silently around the map trying to collect dog tags by defeating other players. If more than ten people are playing then another player takes the role of Metal Gear Mk II in order to help out Snake. Meanwhile two teams battle it out as usual. Well, Shack News apparently is a believer as they have just reported that the game does actually exist. Steve Gibson of the said site has proclaimed that he has seen it with his very own eyes, along with Maarten. He claims that he has witnessed for himself "several different DNF gameplay scenarios, mechanics, and environments being demonstrated."Apart from these, he says that he's also seen in actuality what Duke curator George Broussard has claimed in the past and more: environmental puzzles and interactivity, a host of finished weapons, the existence of an in-game forklift, and plenty of heads and arms being blown off.It sure has taken a while before any teeny-weeny bit of information dropped on us on DNF. If you haven’t checked them out, here’s what 1UP, IGN, Gamespot, Crispy Gamer, and Gamespot (again!) had to say about it.

Of course we’re huge fans of all things Monsters, and totally biased about spreading the PixelJunk gospel but first, here’s a quick overview of some of the highlights in PixelJunk Monsters Encore:

1 new island, Toki Island
15 new levels
5 new music tracks from Otograph
Ice Tower is now a stock item
Reduced gem cost to buy the Tesla Tower
Releasing in May 2008

We had loads of questions for Dylan and team, so we’re splitting this interview into two parts. Featured below are my top five burning questions for Dylan, and be sure to check back next week when SCE Associate Producer Matt Morton delivers the goods on the remaining five.
1. (Deb) How did you decide on the name for the expansion pack? Personally, you know we liked “PixelJunk Monsters: The Lost Island” or “PixelJunk Monsters: The Others”…we’re huge fans of the TV show Lost over here.
(Dylan) Heh heh. Yes I particularly liked “The Others” as I am a fan of Lost too…and am even signed up for that theories forum, 49153…whatever it’s called. However, we needed a name that could be understood in Japan as well, as we don’t like having a different title here, and Encore is understood by the Japanese (although it is pronounced “ahnkowlu”). Also, we wanted the name to reflect the fact that the reason we made this pack is because of the huge response we got from fans of the original, so Encore seemed particularly appropriate as it is what you shout at the end of a good concert etc, when you want just that *little bit more*.
2. (Deb) We get some fan mail here (thanks QA!), but we’re sure you get tons more. Can you spill the beans on what has been your most crazed fan mail to date? Anything PixelJunk juicy?
(Dylan) We’ve been getting a lot of fan mail every week. The bulk tends to arrive just after the weekend so I presume everybody is playing it non-stop during the weekend and they get back to work on Monday/Tuesday etc., feel the itch to play again but can’t, and then look up our mail address on the net. We haven’t had any crazy e-mails, but we’ve had lots of people suggest ideas for a sequel which is really cool. Also, we had a couple of mails about plasma tv burn-in, and rest-assured if we had known people would be playing this game the no. of hours people seem to be playing it then we would have discovered this problem. Therefore Encore and all future PixelJunk games will have an anti-burn option in the menu so as to prevent the PixelJunk logo being forever scarred into your TVs!
We get loads of mails from couples who are enjoying PixelJunk Monsters together. It’s surprising how RTS-like games (usually associated with war and destruction) appeal to both male and female alike, perhaps they even appeal more to women?

3. (Deb) Are the rumors true about your need to make this expansion pack? Was your marriage really in jeopardy if you didn’t turn around a quick XP?
(Dylan) Haha, no, not at all…but my wife simply loved the game so much she would badger me every day for more levels, so in the end I caved in. Of course, we were also getting mails every day from people asking for more so we simply decided to listen to everyone!
4. (Deb) What is your favorite map in PJM Encore & why?
(Dylan) Racer Gardens, because the rough layout is based on a track in PixelJunk Racers and it is a really tough map to beat, but really enjoyable once you learn the patterns. (Hint: The big guys always cross the bridges!)
The secret for the all-clear is rather superb, too, but of course we want the first real player to get there to spill the beans on that one.
5. (Deb) What was the inspiration for the unique and charming art style?
(Dylan) Well, our lead designer on the project, Andy Palmer, came up with some weird red riding hood style pics of a forest with a little girl in a hood and wolves in a kind of Sabre Wulf looking game (Sabre Wulf is an old game Rare made for the ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64 in Britain back in the 80s), but it also had hints of the SNES version of Zelda. Let’s ask Andy himself.
(Andy) Originally we were just throwing around game ideas on the company BBS. I was making concept images to illustrate how the games might look and as Dylan mentioned, one of the images I made was of a simple multiplayer game inspired by Red Riding Hood, which was set in a forest. When it was later decided that we were going to be making a tower defense game, Dylan said he liked the style of the forest image and from then it became the basis for the rest of the game’s look. Initially I didn’t really want to go in that direction because I didn’t really have any character design or 2D game experience, but Dylan encouraged me to stick with it and I’m glad I did. Not only did the game end up looking good, but I was also able to use a graphics tablet instead of a mouse for several months, which helped my arms recover from RSI
(Dylan) So I suppose those two games were subtle inspirations for the style, but then Andy took it all and slowly transformed it into the whole southern tropical island WikiTiki type thing and we ran with it. The monsters have all been animated by those weird witch-masks they are wearing, but underneath those masks they are probably all friendly folk you would invite around for tea.
(Deb) Very cool, and we should mention that Andy created some really amazing new themes, wallpapers and avatars so keep your eyes open on the PS Store for these very soon.
…
We’re going a bit long here so we’ll pick this back up again next week for the continuation of our interview. Five more questions and answers, plus a few more details about the expansion that you simply won’t want to miss.

["dt*518baab2953d672d"]},"b141a1650c47f443":
Gamers patiently waiting for more Aerosmith hits to become available for Rock Band (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii) will be disappointed to know that the band's songs will be exclusive to Guitar Hero franchise, specifically Guitar Hero: Aerosmith (Xbox 360, PS3, Wii), for an unspecified amount of time.We know you're probably wondering about the one song from the band, Train Kept a Rollin', that made it to Rock Band's list of tracks. Set after the Sands of Time trilogy, the game itself is rendered in beautiful cel-shaded environments and takes place in a completely different period compared to the previously released titles. The new hero is a prince who was a formerly a thief. He inadvertently unleashed the evil Ahriman god, trapped inside a box by his (Ahriman's) twin brother Ohrmazd. It is now up to the hero to restore the world affected by the evil god, similar to how Amaterasu restores color to the world in Okami. With the use of a claw-like glove, the Prince can slide along walls and make steep 45 degree angled leaps to make his way through the game. Gameplay will make use of dynamic camera angles popular with many 3D action titles nowadays. You can expect a lot of the same action-packed fight scenes in this title as well just by looking at the images below, so make sure to come back here at QJ.NET for more updates on this upcoming title from Ubisoft. In the meantime, we hope you enjoy the eye candy we were able to collect below. Meanwhile Neogaf forum poster Ether_Snake was also able to translate some of the more gritty details of the new game. Here's the quick rundown of these tidbits in bullet time... er, bullet points:Prince feels Amano-inspired. Looks like a celluloid/animated character (a bit like SFIV). The style itself is still in progress.Corrupted world needs to be healed.Story is much more "1001 Nights"-like, more fantasy, less grounded in reality but instead more magical yet still credible, more poetic.Player must unleash light-wells to heal the corrupted world, which shoots light into the sky, reminiscent of SotC and Okami. The transformation of the world is in real-time, with plants growing back to life as the world heals back and as the player can still move, instead of a mere cutscene, sky changes back to its normal color, etc., to give a strong sense of control and success to the player. No more time rewind and such. They are no making a second Assassin's Creed, they are making a new PoP.Art style was difficult pass through the management, but they never refused it, and eventually loved it.Story specifically: Orhmaz and Arhiman, twin gods, one good one evil, celestial battle, Orhmaz locks Arhiman away in a box which he hides into an faraway oasis deep within a desert. Centuries pass, and comes a troublesome thief (the prince) and Arhiman is freed somehow (not deep explanation given). Prince must undo his mistake. This is what they refer to as a more "1001 Nights" kind of story, like a fable.More open/organic environments. Has a Zelda-esque feel, old-school in themes.Bosses/player use backgrounds during fights (one shot shows an enemy pushing the prince against a wall as if trying to choke him, or another throwing him in the air).Game went through a few iterations; originally too open (felt big but not enough to do), at one point it was more like Assassin as far as open world (going where you want), but players would get lost and wander aimlessly and dynamism suffered as a result. Now instead it is more focused with a clear road, but multiple paths can be taken (free to move from one map to another, back and forth, etc., more open than previous PoPs).The demo map shown to the journalist, old of a few months, has been scrapped design-wise because it was too Assassin-like, now it's more fantasy design-wise.Game world is made of nodes connected by paths, and you can go from one node to another as you wish (this is what they mean by less open, but non-linear; you can see the paths, but you don't have to going from A to B to C). The game adapts as a result (enemies from later visited locations might be more difficult, etc., for example zone A might be more difficult if you access it at the end, but if you accessed it at the beginning then it is easier, even bosses, depending on what order you fight them, adapt as such).Prince can slide along any walls using his glove. Game is as much vertical as horizontal.Prince has more possibilities of movement.Bosses inspired by MGS' boss quality; they are fewer but they have a story, a reason to be, they leave more of an impression on the player. Some are former nobles, sometimes acting against their will. They wondered if they should make just more enemies and try to do a God of War game and try to beat it on its own ground, or go for something different. They went with fewer enemies instead and a new combat style. Combats are duels. You can see the expression on the faces of the characters/bosses. Movement/action in fights is more like Advent Children, more cinematic in presentation.140 people working on it, more to come, people from many projects.

["dt*518baab2953d672d"]},"e4200fb143739cd6":
Heads up, PlayStation 3 gamers! Sorry to be the bringer of bad news again, but it seems that Grand Theft Auto 4 is getting more hitches on the Sony platform.Earlier we reported that some people are experiencing freezing errors with the PlayStation 3 version. Now, reports have come in that some players are also experiencing problems with connecting online.Players who encounter this problem get this message from their in-game cellphone: "Cannot connect to game provider, please try again later." We don't know if the problem lies with the game or with the server. At any rate, since the cellphone is the only way to access multiplayer, those who encounter this problem are effectively barred from the service. Still, don't despair, the single-player mode is bound to be enough to keep you occupied while Rockstar looks into it.

http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/qj/ps3/~3/280313478/119149
http://img.qj.net/uploads/articles_module/119149/grand-theft-auto-iv-4-playstation-3-multiplayer-2_qjgenth.jpg?752427
["dt*518baab2953d672d"]},"22c4eac2680821d8":
22c4eac2680821d8
102fb5b29d7f6aff
Stressed out?
