Is 'Badger Badger Badger' not on here? I saw it referenced in another event, but not actually on its own.
Also, I first saw the Hasselhoff 'Hooked On A Feeling' video in the spring of 2002. My now-husband's college roommate saw it posted on a forum he frequented. Someone wanted to spread the memory.
Lastly, no Leeroy Jenkins?
Stuff I don't see yet ... Animutations [en.wikipedia.org] ... the "turn up the sound" Flash movies with a surprise scream at the end... the ghost girl Flash... Nose Pilot... Mona Neko... SomethingAwful.com + "how is babby formed..." not sure of exact date on all of these
Maybe its not as popular but I wonder if it would be worth mentioning William Shatners version of the " I am Canadian " rant. Surely its atleast a footnote in the origional
Er...there's no Lazytown? "You are a Pirate" and the cake song (officially "Cooking by the Book") were both pretty big...I would add them myself, but I can't remember WHEN they got big. I'm guessing in 2006 but it may have been as early as 2005.
There's a load of stuff missing from 1997-2000. Agent Kimble animations went everywhere, and Newgrounds' Pico's School was the first worthwhile playable Flash game.
Where's bloodninja!? Everyone knows the "I put on my robe and wizard hat" line from his infamous cyb0ring logs. I'd add but I'm not sure what date it originated.
The "I Kiss You" meme is on here. To see all events, you can click Show All in the top right or zoom in using the bar at top or the + markers on bottom.
I agree with Rick B. Please be sure to post actual memes. Not something you found interesting. And not any video that was featured on YouTube. If it is recognized by many to be comedic and they remember when it went live, then yes, by all means post. Please try to keep them as actual memes.
Reminder: These are for Internet Memes. Batman 'exploding shark' tv episodes from the 60's and similar, unless they were remixed and hit big online, are not Internet Memes. If you were looking for the Exploding Whale post - That was from News TV in 1970, and eventually found it's way online in the mid 90's.
Just looked up the wikipedia source - Create away! Would use a date of when it first hit big online, you may have to do some more research for an exact year.
[en.wikipedia.org]
I'd add "Kasparov vs. Deep Blue" from May 1997, which was at the time the largest single web event -- a record it held until the Mars Landing a few years later. Reference: [www.research.ibm.com]
Would someone please check the entry I made for Hitler Gets Banned From Xbox Live (2007)? I'm not sure of all the facts but figured it should be here since the clip has been incarnated in various forms (and I'm not even sure if the Xbox version was first). Also, it easily could have been around before 2007.
I just added "Aeris Dies".. (or at least, I think I did). It's the Internet spoiler and I must have heard it for the first time around ~1999, when I played the game on the PC.
Maybe Unclefucker should be added as well?
OMG Goatse is there, but Tubgirl, Lemonparty and 2 girls 1 cup are surprisingly absent.
Also missing are: I Am Spartar meme (4chan), Fail/Epic Fail and -50DKP (wow vid)
Other than that it's awesome :D
Don't forget 1992's Aliens O Fortuna techno edit: [www.toeotr.net] by Jamie C. Villacorte
Possibly one of the earliest video memes around. I remember struggling all over to download that sucker back in the day. :)
Hey, what about the infamous SkipIntro? [www.skipintros.com]
"The original 1998 Flash-intro parody formerly known as Skipintro.com. Moved/changed to Skipintros.com in 2007. Happy Surfing!"
@Trever F. Well it seems that there are really only two meme generators on the internet lately. 4chan.org and YouTube.com. Its not YouTube's fault its so damn popular.
Half of these 'memes' seem to just be what has the most views on youtube at the time. That doesn't make it a meme. A meme is much deeper. Its the constant change of some original usually with millions of iterations.
Great site, but I did want to point out that "numa numa" is not French, but by Moldovan band O-Zone. The song is in Moldovan (or Romanian, depending on who you talk to as the two are basically identical)
Ah, the dangers of wiki type stuff... they're gone now though which proves the model though :).
People have contributed a bunch of "real" stuff that's been pretty awesome too.
