  Lucy Stone and her husband established the American Woman Suffrage Association in 1869. in 1870, she founded Woman's Journal, which promoted women;s right to vote.

  The Republicans chose General Ulysses S. Grant to be their canidate. grant had no political experience.

  Congress passed the first of four Reconstruction acts over the veto of the President.

• Civil Rights act
  1865

  Congress began to put its reconstruction plan into affect by passing the Civil Rights act. This act was intended to reverse the Black Codes.

  Lincoln attended a play at Ford's Theatre in Washington D.C. John Wilkes Booth went into the box were Lincoln was sitting and shot the President in the back of the head.

  Congress passed the Kansas-Nebraska act. It allowed voters to decide to become a free state or a slave state.

  One of Pierce's first projects, he sent James Gadsden, the United States minister to Mexico, to work out the purchase of the land in the Southwest. They could build a railroad to California, to transport goods.

  Zachary Taylor won the election. He recieved 163 electoral votes; Cass had 127. The Democrats lost the popular vote, too. The Free Soilers took votes that would have gone to Cass. The issue of slavery decided the election by splitting the Democratic party Taylor took office.

  Amount of cotton production was 400,000 bales. The number of slaves increased. Misouri compromise was approved it was allowed to enter as a slave state.
