The Peace Process culminated in the Good Friday Agreement, ending nearly 30 years of violence between the Catholic IRA and Protestant para-military groups.
British troops were sent to Northern Ireland to keep the peace between the Catholics and Protestants. However, violence increased and "the Troubles" began.
Ireland was partitoned into six mainly Protestant counties in the north (Ulster) and the 26 Catholic counties in the south.
The north remained a part of the UK, whereas the south became an independent country - Ireland (Eire)
The Protestant King William of Orange defeated a Catholic army at the Battle of the Boyne. This victory is still celebrated by Protestant marches in Northern Ireland on 12th July every year.
