Ok, just got back in from DC. Bekah and I had a great time there, got to see an exhibit on Christo's Running Fence at the Portrait Gallery and an exhibit on # Allen Ginsberg's photography. We also got to hang out with some amazingly fun people, who were gracious enough to play tour guide to me and show me around their town.
Also, the only real graffiti I saw in DC was Tea Party graffiti.
Smell that? That's irony.
But, I left my film in Bekah's purse, so it'll be a few days until I get those developed and posted.

This is an old tag, be in light of KIDS passing so recently, I had to post this. OI look at this, and I can't help but think of the difference between body and spirit, as represented by the black and the white.
Yeah, I'm reading more into this than was intended, but isn't that what we're supposed to do with art? Look at it and draw from it whatever meaning we need to?

Meh.
Others, will be remembered by what they leave behind. KIDS was a graffiti artist, someone's father, and someone's son. He left a body of work that stretches from here to God knows where. He left us way too soon, and I did my small part to keep his memory alive.
It's all there, in the new issue of Strongbox

So, at this point, I think we all know that I like graffiti/street art. Some people don't, and I'm cool with this. There have been people that have posted their disagreements on my pictures, and they've all been cool people. They have their opinion, I have mine, and we've been able to have civil discussions about our differences in opinion. I can't tell you how much I respect it when two people can have a reasonable discussion about something they disagree over.
It's late, I'm enjoying a drink and a good breeze coming through my apartment courtesy of a loyal window fan, so I'm going to write down my thoughts on this once and for all. Next time someone disagrees with me on graffiti, I'm planning on politely referring them back to this post. Who knows, maybe it keeps a discussion going.
#1 Not all graffiti is created equal. There's a world of difference between Monet and Dali, and they're both artists. There is also a world of difference between Thundercut and Dan Witz. To lump them all in with a kid writing his name over and over is just short sighted.
#2 Tagging someone's home or business is wrong. Call me hypocritical, but it feels different if someone tags a WalMart. I mean, they'll just hire an illegal alien and pay them below minimum wage to get rid of it, where the average person has to go out and clean it up by hand. I get annoyed whenever someone tells me that they poured a concrete sidewalk in front of their home, only to have someone write their initials, their frat's name, or whoever they're dating for the moment in it. This leads me to my next point,
#3 If it's common public property, it should be fair game. Again, I'm not saying that someone should have the right to tag Mount Rushmore, but a busway? Back of a street sign? Mail boxes? Have at it, give me something interesting to look at. If my tax dollars paid for an empty space, I should be able to see something on it besides an advertisement for Disney, Coke, Nike, or McDonald's.
#4 Oh yeah, if you don't take care of it, then it's your own fault if someone tags it. I've been down many disgusting, rancid alleys that are the backs of businesses. They throw their garbage out in the alley, completely missing the dumpsters. I can think of more than a couple times stepping over needles while on my way. Some don't clean it or manage it in any way. Of course someone is going to try something with it. Same with abandoned buildings and other structures. If you're going to create an eyesore, don't complain if someone tries to do something to beautify it.
#5 Last, for now, graffiti/street art invites crime and decreases property value. I would argue that a lot of other things have probably happened to decrease an area's value before some kid with a can of Rustoleum came along. Believe me, I'm not a proponent of the Broken Window Theory (really too simplistic, and blames the common man for the sins of larger forces), but if all the industry, school, people and hope leaves an area, blaming a tagger is kind of too little too late.
And besides. They might actually do something of value.
What's your take on this?

I received word from James via an email forwarded from the U.S. Embassy in Beijing. They visited him on Friday and report that he is in good health and eager to get back home. He was arrested 5 days ago in Beijing for “upsetting public order” and is now serving 10 days for suspicion of activities in regards to his affiliation with the organization Students for a Free Tibet. He has not been formally charged through the judicial system and should not be subject to further judicial proceedings. According to the authorities he will be released Aug. 30th and allowed to depart China. The Embassy stated that it continues to advocate on his behalf at the highest levels and monitors his case around the clock. Updates will continue here and at fffff.at

The Graffiti Research Lab has officially renamed The Verizon Communications Corporation in a ceremony supervised by the U.S. Department of Homeland Graffiti to celebrate the July 9th FISA Legislation granting telecommunication companies retroactive immunity from legal action in cases of warrantless and unconstitutional wiretapping. Under its new name, The National Security Administration, the behemoth telecom will enjoy a greater degree of freedom from assault by litigious U.S. citizens when breaking the law and capitulating to the Bush administration. Thank god for liberal senators like Barack Obama who are looking out for the little guys like AT&T, BellSouth and other major telecom companies. When asked about the FISA provision, NSA/Verizon chairman and CEO Ivan Seidenberg, said, “This is a big new step for our company and our investors.” He continued, “Now we ARE the government, so fuck you… try to stop us! Mwahaha!”
